Saw a post on Reddit mentioning updates to Apple's data collection page. Specifically pedestrian data in more states. When I saw Illinois on the list, my first thought went to Cook County (because Chicago). Was surprised to see that it's not just Cook County. It's 8 of the 10 counties that make up the Illinois portion of the Chicago metro!

Nice to see my county getting some love on the pedestrian aspect! The interesting part is the "when" of it all. It doesn't start until August. Also sounds like it'll be done pretty quickly, as it's listed as August 2021-September 2021.

Has walking directions always included spoken directions? I never noticed this before. Maybe because I barely ever activate walking directions, and when I do, my phone is set to silent/vibrate, thus negating any audio prompts.

I want to say yes, because..."why not?" If it wasn't always there, it would be an odd omission in my opinion.

But like you, I haven't used them, so I'm not 100% sure! The only time I use spoken directions is while driving in an unfamiliar area, which is very rare in itself. In familiar areas, I turn spoken directions off.

Has anyone in the UK 🇬🇧 seen the waze like report feature available in the Beta’s?

Any news on the ratings ans POI feature that‘s supposed to be in since one of the earlier point release updates?

Or is that thing scrapped / iOS 15+?

I kinda wish there was a way to track the reports for corrections you send to Apple, and potentially get updates on what's going on with them. I send in so many road corrections and navigation exit issues, and then get frustrated when they're still not fixed months later. After at least 5 or 6 months go by with no corrections, I'll send it over again. Sometimes it gets fixed shortly after, and I wonder if it's because I sent it again, or if they just happened to get around to my original report.

Back on my random side-topic of Google Maps' "reporting" feature: I had reported here a few times that on Google Maps for iOS, that reporting button would essentially never appear for me. I recently got a Galaxy Note 8 phone from my work, and I updated Google Maps through the Google Play Store. I wasn't seeing the reporting button on that phone, either! But then today, the reporting button suddenly appeared on the Note 8 (but still not on my iPhone). It's so weird that's intermittent, even on a native Android device.

Oh, and I've been experiencing an annoying glitch on Apple CarPlay over the past few weeks. If I'm navigating on Apple Maps, switch to the Calendar app, and then switch back to Apple Maps again, instead of going into Maps, I get a gray screen, and CarPlay freezes for a few seconds. Then I get kicked back to the homescreen. If I attempt to open Maps a second time, it'll work, but my original route will be cancelled, although it immediately recalculates and resumes my route from wherever I am at the time.

Same for me on iOS 14.5 beta 5...

Running beta 5 on 12PM and IPP 11 and just noticed my Apple Maps favorites between the two devices no longer match. I had Home, Work, and 5 Addresses. The 12PM only shows H/W/A1. The IPP11 only Shows H/A1/A2/A3.

Not sure what happened.

Any news for the new cartography update in europe?
Specially in Italy
Apple released their own map data in the United Kingdom and Ireland in October of last year. Apple hasn’t officially confirmed when they are going to expand their own data to more European countries. I would expect Apple to give us a road map of upcoming expansions planned to be released throughout the rest of the year at WWDC. Italy is one of the countries that are the most likely to receive the new map data next according to an analysis made by Justin O’Beirne.

You can set the volume for spoken directions independently for every different mode of transportation? I’ve never realised that.

I didn't either, because if you go into Maps settings from the Settings menu, it only gives you the option to change the volume for the driving directions. But while engaged with walking directions, if you swipe up from the bottom and select the speaker button, it brings you into volume settings for walking directions, which on my phone seemed to have defaulted to mute.

No spoken directions for transit trips, though.

Okay, Apple...you really need to improve Siri navigation searches.

Was taking a friend to Fort Totten in Queens, an old Army base turned park. Went into Apple Maps on CarPlay, went into the voice search, and said "Fort Totten", expecting Apple Maps would show me a list of POIs that share that name, or have part of that name in them. We were in Queens already, and only a few miles away, so I expected to see the Fort Totten we needed.

Instead, Apple Maps loaded, and activated, directions to...Fort Totten, North Dakota.

How is that helpful?
