Tks for your updates.

I think one of the posters said he was able to rate a local business for uk (probably able to provide photos too?) in iOS 14.5.

I wonder if the new feature was only made available to uk users.

Probably…I thought one of the conditions for rating a POI was that Maps has to see you have actually been to that location so it prevents bots or paid services from uploading fake reviews/pictures.

Also, there are many legal notices required for this feature and they are country specific, so you also must be using an IP address from that location I imagine.

Maps let’s you do incident reporting without routing in the latest 14.5 beta.

...
You can then mark the spot and add details about the incident.

EDIT: Only works on my iPhone and not my iPad (just updated to latest beta)

Not available in Belgium (yet ;-))...

That’s an important add. Many (most?) people are not routing 100% of the time, especially if in a familiar area. Makes sense to allow them to report too. Is the little reporting icon showing up on CarPlay even when not routing now?

Time for one of my week trips and using the opportunity to do the Apple Maps check.
Running this on a 12 ProMax on 14.5 beta 6
Nothing fancy. Just take turns going from Point X to Point Y alternating between Apple Maps and Google Maps.
All was good till I get to my destination, and lunch.

Location: Oak Creek Village, Arizona.

We headed to lunch. Google got us to a nice repast of fine Mexican cuisine.
On the way back, Apple Maps kept coming up blank. No data in the map. Tried a reboot. No joy.
Checked Google Maps and it was all good.
See below for screenshots.
Happened again later in the day. Other times it worked fine.
Not sure if it ws AM, the beta, or….
btw - lots of circles herre and AM has done flawlessly with directions.
More tomorrow.

Saw this on Reddit last night and still not fixed as of this morning. Wisconsin is located “slightly” off its actual location.

Did a hard restart and it is still wrong. What’s more funny is that Wisconsin has no label. Hah.

Edit - I guess the server update for me was just being slow after my restart. It is fixed, but still updating as typing in “Wisconsin” still doesn’t bring it up as a destination and a search will default to “Madison, WI”. Other states work.

Apple got political and literally erased Georgia off the map? lol

There has been some weirdness on my end, too. The other day, Apple Maps was randomly not believing I was driving on a mapped road, and kept turning into the circle as though it couldn't locate my position. No signal issues or anything that I could see, and I've never had such issues in my neighborhood, ever. Also, when I get off the highway near my home, the service road's name no longer appears on my screen, despite it being named on the map itself.

This reminds me of the random nonsense we used to always see when Apple was making some changes on the backend, back when we were awaiting the new maps to come out.

I’m in the UK and can do this on iOS 14.4.2 - it’s been available for a few days and just suddenly appeared.

Can’t comment on not being able to rate POI, I seem to be able to do so to most things in my area.

Sorry for not replying sooner. Am pretty sure I’ve been able to ‘Add a Photo’ in previous versions of iOS but happy to stand corrected if mistaken.

The “add a photo” and “review” options are part of the same terms and conditions. Curious when they will be available in the USA?

LOL 14.5 beta 7 came out today? My goodness.

So after more than a year of submitting reports, Apple finally corrected how a road near me had been misdrawn on the map. (The way this road was drawn would make you believe you could not make a particular turn, when you actually could.)

After they fixed the road's positioning, the one-way arrows from the original road remained on the map, even after opening and closing the app a few times. Just floating one-way arrows, where the road used to be. lol

But after shutting down my phone and restarting it, the errant arrows vanished.

hello, just wonder if Apple replied to you saying they had accepted your corrections?

I once received a notification saying the Map was updated but didn’t mention what exactly has been changed and whether they acknowledged the update was in response to my report of alternative route.

So, only thumb up or down for the poi?

have you checked with your friend if the features are generally available for uk users?

Anyone knows why the Map setting does not have option to use language other than the system setting, while most of the other Apps allows an App setting to override the system Lang setting?

I prefer English as the system Lang but it make much more sense to use local Lang in the Map. There is an option to set whether to stick using English for location labels. But this setting does not affect the other map features like Search Nearby.

It would be better to display the nearby attractions or poi in local Lang as it would be easier for the map users to locate the poi in real life.

No. I only receive notifications if they accept my changes to a POI (Point Of Interest).

Changes to road layouts or names don't trigger notifications, it seems.

Great write-up as always. I really like the part he has about new country releases as well as Look Around releases at the end. He mentions how long it has been since there has been a release for a new country/region and how long it has also been since the last Look Around release...he says "perhaps something big is coming?" (I like the sound of that)! But he also poses the possibility that the delays are "pandemic related"...which wouldn't surprise me either.

Looking at the "perhaps something big is coming" part of it...I wonder if that will translate into Look Around being released for the remainder of the US. I think the size of Canada's release was a trial run for Apple and I could sort of see them pushing out the rest of the US in one massive release. And then of course, there's a fairly decent number of countries that the new Map could be rolled out to at this point.

Hmm Apple Maps (14.4.2) still showing and announcing the old “wrong” exit numbers on Massachusetts interstate I-95 several months after MA DOT changed them From sequential to distance based numbering.

I've always preferred sequential...but I understand the benefits of mileage.

When I-84 in New York switched over to mileage, the exit numbers were updated in Apple Maps relatively fast. I believe New York State is in contact with Apple Maps regarding major updates to our road networks. Perhaps Massachusetts is not in close contact with Apple Maps.

it seems they take user reports and comments slow.

I lately reckoned they corrected a suggested route that I submitted to them months ago.

however, it seems that they prefer to stick to suggest walk paths along street roads. There are shortcut walking paths through shopping malls and estates that I suggested to cut the walking time from over 20mins to 5 mins, but they appeared to have their own principles .

Server-side data changes results in oddities, as some data gets updated on the map, while others only update initially in directions.

New York City’s highways usually have service roads running alongside them. They usually carry the same name as the highway they run alongside with. When the “new maps” first came out, all of these service roads were explicitly identified as such, in order to differentiate their name from the main highway itself. For example, the service road alongside the Whitestone Expressway was listed on the map as “Whitestone Expressway Frontage Road”. This was fairly consistent across the whole map.

However, “frontage road” is more of a Midwest/West Coast term. We use “service road” in New York. So I spent a lot of time and effort sending corrections into Apple Maps to change all instances of “Frontage” over to “Service”. Eventually, I succeeded, and the map was good for the past few months.

Yesterday while navigating, I noticed that the directions were telling me to “Turn right onto Whitestone Expy”, and it completely omitted “Service Rd”. This happened on more than one occasion. When I checked the map, it still showed the road as being called “Whitestone Expy Service Rd”. So for a while, I thought that maybe Apple had updated something within Maps that changed the logic in how it spoke directions, by omitting needless additional words.

But I was wrong. By the next day, the service road on the map had its name changed, and was now showing as just “Whitestone Expy”.

I thought that maybe Apple changed their mind in displaying “Service Rd” where applicable, so I went looking around the map. But all other highways still had their service roads marked. Only the Whitestone Expressway had been changed.

So now I’m left wondering if someone else sent in “corrections” to Apple Maps, and asked for it to be changed. It’s not wrong, but it presents an inconsistency in how Maps displays information. I’m debating whether to contact Apple Maps and ask them what their intent is. The unique highway shields for our parkways also appear differently depending on how you’re viewing the map.

Spent the last 11 days with my parents…upgraded Mom from an iPhone 6 to 12 (hah)…internet from 100 mb to gig service (for $25 less per month)….and then driving to dinner one night, “What is this we’re looking at??”

I was using Apple Maps on their CarPlay and they had no idea about the stop signs/traffic lights, update Siri directions (natural notifications) etc.

They both use Waze and now want to switch.

And then, driving to the airport this morning, watching my Dad use Waze…all the map clutter…and I swear, he uses the view mode where the map is always pointing North. Hah

Takes time because I assume Apple needs to verify every "correction". Someone could submit phony corrections to direct away from a competitor's business or for any reason.

Oy...we’re gonna have to admit at some point that occasionally, Apple’s design choices for the map results in an intersection that they can’t show properly.

Northern Boulevard & 204th Street in Bayside (Queens), New York. An odd intersection to begin with, as 204th Street sort of cuts diagonally across Northern Boulevard, and 45th Avenue ends there as well.

I complained to Apple that the current shape of the intersection in Apple Maps would cause navigation to instruct you to turn right onto Northern Boulevard just to immediately turn left onto 204th Street. The previous shape of the intersection also prevented you from merging from 45th Avenue onto Northern Boulevard.

After a few attempts at submitting corrections and photos of the intersection over the past two years, Apple finally made an update in the design of the intersection. And it’s...better? Somewhat. But still really isn’t right.

Below, is the original map, the current map, and then the same intersection as seen on Google Maps and Waze.

It looks like they’ve improved the driving experience for those driving east on 45th Avenue into Northern Boulevard east, but if you’re heading north on 204th Street, what will Apple Maps now say if you’re either continuing straight up 204th Street, or intending to turn right onto Northern Boulevard? Will it instruct you to turn right onto 45th Avenue, which isn’t possible in real life?

Interesting. Road name corrections sounds more straightforward than suggested route, but still it may stir up debate.

I am living 5 min walks from the subway station (through a path through the estate) but Apple Map always suggest to walk 25 min to the nearby bus stop and take a ride on bus to the next subway station. Hence, any suggested route for travelling from my home is not practical.

I think that not until Apple Map adopts crowdsource for Map info, its detailed Map info would be lagging that of Google.

Ignore the route and go the way you know it should be. According to Apple, it will be noted automatically, right?
