Have they fixed the issue where collections dont show in Maps unless you force close Maps from the multitasking view and then open it again? Its a right royal pain in the backside when you are trying to use Maps via CarPlay and you cant go to a saved location because collections havent loaded and you have to get the phone and force close the app then load it again to get them to show.

I never noticed that before...trying on my next drive.

A difference between 14 and 13.5 ...
In 14, Maps/3D, a label for a building floats above the location and shifts as you move - kind of like the icons on your home screen.
In 13.5, the same label is glued in place.

Nice little improvement, well spotted. Also does it on Big Sur.

Its still doing it in the latest version of iOS13 and has been for a while now. I can normally work round it either by using Siri or I use the calendar a lot so when i plug in it can often predict where i want to go to but i have regular places in a collection, some work customers addresses in another and a sport collection for my home cricket ground, other places we play and more of than not it doesnt show them and you have to get the phone, unlock it, go to multitasking, close Maps and then reopen it from either the phone or CarPlay to get them to show.

That issue has been happening less for me over the past few weeks. I think the update to iOS 13.5.1 helped put that glitch largely to bed. But once in a blue moon, it still happens.

I pray that Apple Maps on iOS 14 will be far more stable.

Anyone know if you can change your default form of transportation with Siri to cycling in iOS 14? Thinking of switching to iOS for the 5.4" iPhone, but I remember a major annoyance with the OG iPhone SE I used to have being Siri would always spam me with traffic alerts about my commute and calendar events when I (like most NYC residents) don't even own a car.

In your Settings area, you go to Maps, and you can choose what your preferred transportation type is. Currently, on iOS 13.5.1, those options are "Driving", "Walking", and "Transit". I would have to assume that "Cycling" would also be listed as an option for iOS 14.

Either way, if you didn't have a car, you could always set it to "Transit". Your iPhone would then use that preference for directions, and for estimated travel times to calendar events.

The feature requires a compatible vehicle. Apple says that it’s working with a number of manufacturers to support the feature, including BMW and Ford and will add many more in the near future.

Not for the EV mapping - that’s only for car key.

I feel like something with turn-by-turn has been changed in beta 2. The map movement on turns and curves seemed to be "smoother". Wish I took a screen recording. "Slower" is another word I would use to describe it. I wouldn't say "slower" is a bad thing, either!

If it was an actual change and I'm not just thinking it seems different...I like it. If it's a bug and not an intended change...well...I still like it!

Hi all, I'm not currently a developer so I have no access to the betas, but I'm curious about one thing.

Does Apple Maps in iOS 14 support a "drive around mode", i.e. just being used like an old-school satnav without having to explicitly give a destination?

To be clearer: in iOS 13, the closest thing is setting the map to rotate together with the device, but that only works until the screen goes to sleep, so it's effectively useless. A setting to never let the screen sleep would be enough, for the most part.
(For reference, Google Maps for iOS also lacks both an explicit "drive around mode", and also has no setting to keep the screen on. On Android, you can enable it — it's called "driving mode" if I'm not mistaken — and the interface changes to be somewhat more practical while driving. No idea why it was never ported to iOS.)

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere so I have little hope of this being implemented, but I figured I'd ask to be sure... :)

Thanks in advance!

Interesting point. I didn't realize this was an issue for people on their phones. I exclusively use my mapping apps in my car via Apple CarPlay. My phone screen is off and locked, and the maps are displayed on my car's screen, which never shuts off. So I can essentially drive around with no specific destination, and just have the map following me.

Before I had a car with CarPlay support, I would just jam my phone into a cup holder. The screen stayed on for my commute, but I was getting directions, so perhaps that does make the difference.

I use Waze as it's the only app that seems to support this mode, at least among "big" ones. The only other navigation app with a dedicated "drive around" mode is HereWeGo; just using the general map will still dim the screen and then turn it off. I have the phone in the charging cradle in the car, so it makes sense to have a "passive" map app as I go; I do not get audio alerts necessarily, but glancing at it is enough to be aware of any reports, traffic, etc.

I'm genuinely surprised that navigation apps don't include a simple "keep screen on" feature, as it seems both simple and obvious. Perhaps most people just set up routing even for short drives, or familiar routes and I'm in the minority, but it just seems weird not to allow such a simple thing.

My car stereo only supports Siri Eyes Free so CarPlay is not an option. (Actually, the latest 13.5 managed to break Waze via Siri — I was used to say "Hey Siri, route me to $wherever using Waze" and it worked, but now it tells me "I'm sorry, I can't do that while you're driving". I reported it using the Feedback Assistant with an easy way to replicate it, but it's still marked as open. I hope it gets fixed at least in iOS 14! :D )

I don’t really like the new updates. The maps became a little bit better thou. But not the best one. I’m not using any mass maps for about 5 years. I find them inaccurate. The map builders didn’t take into account scaling and do rough calculations. That’s why I’m using a map from this platform. I needed a detailed map of my town so guys came and made some geo calculations. So when I use their maps I’m sure that it’s the most accurate numbers.

I don’t think any of the online maps are designed for “detail” necessarily. They are designed to get you from point A to point B in the easiest way possibly (both from an info and “visual” standpoint).

If I want to do a drone attack on a terrorist hideout, I’ll use a detailed mapping system designed to do that, not Apple, Google or Waze Maps.

What kind of detail do you feel is off and where? We love examples in this thread so we can see for ourselves.

Every time I use Apple maps regardless of which version it is, it always has gotten me lost. Google isn't perfect either but it's normally correct a lot more often. Since iOS 13 it doesn't even begin navigation at all and stays stationary from where I stared so, idk what's wrong with it.

Every time...that’s awful...
