I think you have to qualify this.
There's OS updates and there's app updates. Each is pushed out by different sources.
No question, OS updates...iPad is way better. App updates are by the app developers and have little to do with the OS.
Depending on the app, android and iOS differences may be minor (or no difference) or they may be major.
If the app is a popular title... I would say the differences are probably minor. YouTube, Pandora/Spotify, etc are some examples. And yes, there are still blown-up Android phone apps masquerading as tablet apps and it's more prevalent on Android.
But getting back to the OS support for a moment.
Even though my tablet was only supported for KitKat...beyond the fact that I can't get later versions of Android on my tablet (Marshmallow, Nougat, etc), I've yet to find an Android app that won't load on Kitkat.
Certainly, the lack of security updates are a real problem...but I never do any sensitive stuff from my tablet so that is moot in my case too.
