I will say RCS using Google Messages on our Pixel's is damn near perfect though. My immediate family being my Wife, and two kids, we all have Pixel phones; 3 XL, 4 XL, 5, and 5a. And we have RCS enabled in chat features, and it works amazingly.
I love RCS from my recent experience with it on Google Messages. Feels much lighter and cleaner than iMessage. Not quite as reliable yet but also quicker to oscillate backwards to SMS - feels less of a chore vs halfway loading and “failed to deliver” and turning green. Just switches to SMS for a minute. They’ll iron it out.

You won’t use WhatsApp or any Facebook product because you don’t trust the privacy but you use a Google phone? I’m not here to say it’s right or wrong btw, but Google are just as bad or worse than Facebook for privacy. If you have their hardware and operating system, I would imagine privacy is an issue across the entire platform beyond social media and messaging apps.

I don’t even think about whether any of my friends have iPhones or not as WhatsApp is the most dominant messaging platform here in Europe anyway. I use iMessage for a handful of family members but even then group messaging is done through WhatsApp. It makes life a lot simpler rather than arguing over iMessage not being available beyond iOS in my experience.
I had to resort to using plain SMS during the outage the other day. What’sapp is probably the default messenger in the U.K.

I didn’t message anybody during those few hours but did get a few come through the following day. I won’t send pics or videos to people via standard old SMS as it’s annoying we still get charged 50p or whatever it is for every message. It’s the reason I could never use iMessage for group chats with anybody outside the iOS bubble. The amount of videos and pics that get sent around, it would get very expensive.

I didn’t send any pics or videos because of the charges but i did send messages via SMS as it was the only way during the outage.

That’s so odd, why do European carriers charge for mms?
It’a been free in the US for a while.
Been free for like 15 years or more, IIRC. It’s exactly why Apple Messages was able to take such a strong hold here, considering the iPhone’s market share is higher in the US than just about anywhere else. We all just used SMS/MMS and if that was on an iPhone, nothing in our messaging habits had to change when Apple Messages was rolled out. And since then it’s just gotten better.

Probably because so few people send SMS or MMS messages these days with the popularity of WhatsApp and iMessage. It’s a bit of extra money for them.

We do pay massively less than our American friends for our contracts and tariffs though, even if hardware is more expensive here.

That’s basically it, people did not have to change how they used messsges. If it’s iOS it’s iMessage, if android auto switches to sms.

Nothing to set up.

Ain’t that the truth! When I go to Russia I get a local sim, I pay $15 for unlimited everything for the month, and no 480p restrictions for video.

It's not free in the US it's just included in your monthly package as unlimited SMS/MMS and you can't remove it and so get a reduction etc etc

This is why US carriers liked Iphone's as users never really used SMS/MMS to the same degree yet still paid the stealth cost for it in their data package

Point is I don’t have to worry about it and how many texts I send. It’s included.

The point is it's not free :) it's a stealth charge of around $3:50/month if they allowed you to get credit back

In many countries there is not this compulsory bundle and you can pick and choose your addons especially those on low budgets can run their smartphones of just a few dollars a month, many run just on pay as you go and use public wifi as sms is free to receive for things like otp codes

SMS has been free on most contracts here for at least 10 years too, it’s just sending pictures and videos that cost extra. I can’t remember the last time I needed to do that though as I’ve been using WhatsApp since it came out. You can get sim deals here with unlimited minutes, texts and 10GB of data for as little as £10 a month.

Let's see if and when... For me using Imessage is convenient bc of all the devices linked... I do have a few Android contacts that just use regular SMS and not many are using Whatsapp... I use Google messenger on my Android phones...

It’s unlimited, even if it’s a stealth charge I don’t have to worry about being charged for each individual message.
I pay $35 per line on T-Mobile. I guess if it’s a stealth charge it’s worth it.

Because it "costs" extra for the data transmission. Remember the days of MMS, data were not common and "expensive" in the 2G/3G era.

Heck, you should come to my country. In my country, carriers charges you more when you text to people on a different carrier. Yeah, even the voice minutes cost more if you call people on different carriers. That's why whatsapp has become the standard for text and calls, because the carriers are simply nickel and dimming customers to the teeth.

As you know :) in many countries especially Asia the average user is likely not to spend more than a few $ per month running their phone where eg in US/UK an extra hidden few dollars for unlimited sms/mms is almost nothing regardless if used or not and the carriers take advantage of this.

Sure Asian telecom rates looks a bit like a gouge for those that can afford it but when these guys watch their spend to fractions of a dollar being able to control every aspect and avoid charges via WhatsApp and public WiFi etc they see as a great benefit. You can even have just daily data plans for precise usage :)

I work with many well paid Asian engineers and very few have data let alone unlimited sms given it's typically $5 for 10gb/month. They swap carriers at a drop of a hat if one or another offers the slightest of margin gains

A friend is the CFO of a major carrier and when his company had a special on unlimited mobile data many canny families worked out they could save 1 or 2 dollars a month by cancelling the house internet plan and all swapping on to mobile to watch TV etc as peak traffic spiked alarmingly

I think many forget here about others who are on very tight budgets

When I last checked US was 3rd place after Iceland and Ireland as the most expensive country to own and run an Iphone but obviously fair much better as a % of national average income

Fall 2021. What browsers do you Multi-Platformers™ use?

I started back into DD of Android using my Pixel 3, but I am woefully unimpressed with Chrome. Way, way, way, way, more ads on it than on the iOS side, and I hate how hitting X on a popup video never works, it just opens the ad I didn't want to see in full screen!

Firefox is my goto for now, but curious what tricks some of you are using?
