Fall 2021. What browsers do you Multi-Platformers™ use?

I started back into DD of Android using my Pixel 3, but I am woefully unimpressed with Chrome. Way, way, way, way, more ads on it than on the iOS side, and I hate how hitting X on a popup video never works, it just opens the ad I didn't want to see in full screen!

Firefox is my goto for now, but curious what tricks some of you are using?
I use Brave when I’m living the non-Apple life as you get the benefits of Chromium but also content blocking. Otherwise, Samsung browser is quite similar to mobile Safari (or used to be, haven‘t poked around with it recently since Safari’s changes) and also I believe could use content blocking plug-ins.

I’ll agree on Chrome—it’s terrible in it’s mobile format because of the omission of any native, on-board content blocking.

One up for Samsung browser. That's what I kept coming back to on my last Android, and I tell you I went to hell and back trying every single browser. What I was looking for specifically was a dark reader mode to match the one on mobile Safari. Nothing on Android achieves that level of simplicity and readability (and availability via share functions, as a shortcut on iOS lets you turn almost anything into a neat Reader page) but Sammy got the closest.

New joiner in this thread. I've been using Android since 2012. Galaxy SII was very good, Nexus 6p's battery failed too soon and I'm now on an S10+. I tried the iPhone 7 after the 6p, but I couldn't get along with the horribly outdated start screen, coming from Nova Launcher.

I had a complete nightmare with my S10+ the last week. It's rooted and for some reason, started downloading 30GB worth of system updates over 4G, but never installed updates. Battery life became horrid and it cost me a tremendous amount of money. So I decided to reflash it and restore my Google Drive backup. This was all very easy with the SII and the 6p, but with the S10+ it's hell. Samsung blocked it all and twice I thought I had a paperweight left. I managed to restore it to full working order by reflashing the latest Samsung firmware, so now I'm back into Samsung hell with my friends Bixby, Samsung Wear and Fortnite Installer etc.

If I'm going to be stuck in a proprietary hell anyway, it might as well be Apple's. I have an iPad Pro 11", 1st generation, and it's been brilliant. I will be using it to try if I can get everything the way I want it on iOS. The 13 Pro is shouting at me, though I'm aware I will need a 3rd party photo app if I don't want to get a blurry overprocessed mess. But that's the same as on Android anyway.

BTW, as for the browser, I standardised on Firefox everywhere. It's about the only non-Chromium based browser left and it syncs very nicely across all my devices. I'm hoping it will compensate for the lack of system-wide adblocker that I can get on a rooted Android phone (which I miss a lot with my current Samsung ROM).

Well, the decision has been made. I looked up all the small annoyances that bothered me with the iPhone 7 when I borrowed it from my wife (before I decided to buy the S10+). Launcher - much improved with widgets now. Adblock - AdGuard will do that, or NextDNS. Then my S10+ decided to bother me with popups for an impossible to uninstall facebook app. And a 13 Pro arrived in stock in a shop nearby. Pulled the trigger immediately, with the default Apple case. I got a decent trade-in value for my Samsung as well (€130 for a 3 year old phone type), so I'm pretty chuffed.

I just recently switched from Android to a full suite of apple stuff.

I originally was an iPhone user for the 2g and 3g devices. I switched to IOS from windows mobile with the first two apple devices and then from there went over to Android and haven't really looked back until now. I've been mostly happy on the android platform which has seen massive improvement since the early days but I've been looking more and more at iPhones over the last year and Google has finally driven the final nails in the coffin.

I'd say the biggest factors in making me want to switch is the general feeling in Android that you really feel the device age as time goes on as compared to the iPhone which remains pretty damn functional, fast and updated for longer. Now this is ironic because I generally don't keep my devices long but my wife does and she has been annoyed by her Pixel 4a more and more lately, despite it being a relatively new purchase (1 year). The hardware can be premium but there seems to be some nagging things that never seem to go away and the fragmentation in the devices is only getting worse. Especially with android tv coming out and there being a pretty wide gap in capabilities, app availablity as well as speed and performance depending on device.

Another factor is Google has been very...lets say half ass in their direction at times. I was a hangouts user that got burned, google voice has languished as a result since it doesn't integrate with messages like it did for Hangouts and there are other things. My Nexus 6p had 3 replacements all with the dreaded 40% batter to shut off because of crappy components. My wife's pixel 4a gps doesn't work anymore. My 4a5g has issues as well where it will lag behind where I actually am until I reset the device and while my batter has been fine the device does feel it age a bit when scrolling. All persist through wipes and clean installs. Android 12 hasn't been that great of an update, changing the notification pulldown for commonly used things and while non of these are deal breakers they and other things all add up.

I also had google chromecast with google tv devices. Also slowing down over time because google keeps stuffing more and more crap on the home screens all updating at the same time. They have issues with HLG which causes 4k broadcasts from Fox to suck and have color issues. Yet another in a long line of google products that is half assed in execution.

The Pixel 6 pro was on my radar and when I went to Best Buy to check them out pre release (I had an order in) they felt cheap and I wasn't impressed.

Then I got screwed on 2 google play gift cards from Sam's, the codes literally disintegrated as they were carefully scratched off. Google had me sign affidavits that they could view my location history to help try and verify purchase and rectify the issue, had me go to Sam's to get paper work verified as well as receipts all sent to them. After a week they got back to me saying that I was basically screwed and that while it was very likely I was the purchaser they were not able to do anything for me. I expected this but was still pretty pissed, even more so since they made me do legwork as if they could actually help.

Enough being irritated, time to try something new.

So my first apple product in a long time was an Apple TV 4K. I was impressed from first boot with the speed and how well it worked. Very happy. Yes, expensive. However it just works and the shield which is almost as expensive has had a long run of issues, hacks and other work arounds over its lifetime to do the things people have wanted.

If my TV experience was so good why not the phone? So we ordered 13 mini for my wife and I ordered a 13 pm. While waiting I got an auto update from Microsoft that broke a few things so I went out and bought a MBA m1 to check out. Why not? Having a blast with my MBA m1 so now I'm looking at getting a mini to replace my windows desktop running plex and storage.

Wife's mini came in, she loves it and I got to play with it a bunch setting it up for her. Made me really want mine but it was 2 to 3 weeks behind. Luckily I managed to score a 13pm from a store so canceled my online order. Now we are both very happy.

The transition hasn't been difficult. There are a few quirks but for the most part IOS is very smooth, fast and works incredibly well. I've had no issues learning and quite honestly IOS and android share much more in common than they have differences. The integration between apple products is amazing and I feel the apps / games are either on par or better than the android counterparts much less the added apps and games which aren't available on android at all. I appreciate the added privacy controls and love seeing how the changes are screwing over companies like Facebook and I hope that sort of digital cancer continues to get blocked.

My biggest complain is probably the IOS keyboard and lack of punctuation or ability to add a number row. With these massive phones that seems ridiculous you can't have a number row and not having punctuation is simply super idiotic. The swipe controls work ok for punctuation but still, pretty stupid. One other odd item is having app settings separated out in settings. This is a little disjointed but it works once you get used to it.

Very pleased overall, we'll see how things go. I might even divorce google further and start moving off gmail if things keep going the way they are.

I just had the complete reverse of your experiences as by chance my sister asked me to help upgrade her iPhone 8 to 13 while I am in the UK and also her Ipad 4 to latest mini, plus her friend who had a IP6 took the 8 so I also did that upgraded for her.

I thought what better time to see how far Apple had come since I last owned an Iphone as this should be a breeze as literally Apple to Apple :)

Well quite frankly I was shocked and contra to what we read on MR there is no way my sister who's not a complete numpty on technology could of done this and her friend with the IP6 would of been worse off.

From the start the IP8 would not scan the Apple QR code but the IPad 4 would, the transfer screwed up account passwords and other accounts whilst you waited for all apps to be downloaded from the store that never questioned you on revised permissions etc we read so much about

Endless 2 step verifications that bizarrely goes to iPad and not the iPhone or both and the extent of menu scrolling is almost exhaustive. Of course the new Apple swiping through me and my sister for days as she lost her back button :)

Transferred VPN settings and Apps locked up as one prevented the other from upgrading and downloading

Her bank apps were screwed up and we could get one resolved but the other needed a visit to local branch to sort, so her Apple pay and wallet was locked up for several days

Laggy apps especially on screen rotations and even though she only has few apps several these were not optimised for Ipad and no landscape mode, I did not expect this at all :(

I also got all her photos sorted and other files by using Onedrive so she has access to all, as her surface laptop is infrequently used now she does not run her charity

The amount of Ads and extent of subscription requests really hit me even from a simple calculator app she uses to Apple TV with add placements etc

As she had a 3 months free trial on Apple TV that was good as I OD'd on 8 episodes catch up of the foundation :D but even that was buggy and often would not resume after a small break to the toilet etc

I can't say I was impressed and the whole processes was certainly no better if not worse on some counts over an Android upgrade

Still my sisters happy despite we could not get an IW7 as they are like hens teeth in UK and the IPad that comes with a charger suits her other than having to swap cables as IP13 is not USB-C like the new Ipad mini.

That's exactly what I had with my Nexus 6p! But what really ticked me off this time, was the custom ROM situation. My first smartphone was the Galaxy SII, which was easy to hack. I didn't really do it until after two years. As you rightly say, Android phones age badly. So after 2 years only, the SII, nearly the top model when I bought it, was a lagging mess. I flashed it with a SlimROM and had 2 more years out of it, until the screen broke. Brilliant!

With the Nexus6p, same thing. I ROMmed it immediately and switched to another ROM every so often. Easy! Clean wipe, restore backup from Google Drive, done!

But with the S10+, it's horrible, as you can read above. It's so damn horrid that I had to revert to Samsung's walled garden, which is much, much worse than Apple. I know, because I have a mac+iPad as well. Android is just not what it used to be. Either you're in a hellish place like with Samsung, or you know you're being listened to live (most Chinese brands), or you're stuck with a company that can dump you when they wake up with a bad mood in the morning (Google).

My biggest complain is probably the IOS keyboard and lack of punctuation or ability to add a number row.
Have you tried 3rd party keyboards? I use MessagEase, which is rather strange when you see it for the first time. But I remember that it worked just as well on the iPhone 7 I borrowed from my wife to try it out.

Was using Firefox, but I found out it’s not optimized for Android tablets and Samsung Dex. So went with Brave now.

On iOS try Dark Reader. It’s a fantastic Safari extension that gives you true dark mode on all websites…except for Apple.com…go figure. You can set it to match your dark theme hours and can turn it off for specific sites.

Thanks, yeah I use Dark Reader and now also StopTheMadness to fight all kinds of stupid scripts and whatnot, and Super Agent to deal with obnoxious cookie consent forms. Safari was already unparalleled but with these new iOS 15 APIs it's just total boss mode. What I meant in my post was that I've struggled to find an equally good alternative on Android.

Oh got it. My mistake / misread a little bit. I agree, on Android the Samsung browser is the best and the only one that comes close to a true dark mode.

The closest alternative I have found is Firefox; it allows extensions. But even then, Safari runs circles around it.

Anyone coming to Android from iOS is going to hate the chrome and YouTube experience on the native devices.

Their posture and default level of ads on these devices is overwhelming in a bad way. If you aren’t a power user like we all are, it is really off putting and makes iOS experience feel gold standard.

That said, iOS is not the power user platform that we all enjoy.

The easiest solutions are to use a different browser with ad blocking (for example, Brave or Firefox) and YouTube Vanced.

If anything, I find the YouTube experience worse on iOS as there is no way of using something like Vanced. Without a YouTube Premium subscription, you are stuck with ad blocking within Safari to view YouTube content without incessant advertising.

Your not wrong, though that comment bolsters my point in some ways.

We can take that into effect and adjust, but uncle Chester who just wants to use his phone and not get bombarded with ads, likely won't likely consider or know how to tackle that.

Really? I can't say I found too many differences in terms of experience whenever I've made the switch over. But maybe that's because I have used both.

I don't have screenshots, but the amount of ads and intrusiveness of the ads on Chrome within Android for some sites is a far worse experience than Safari on an iOS device. I will have to retest to ensure I am not being hyper sensitive to one versus the other.

I also seem to get a lot more of the dual (not able to skip) ads within Youtube on the Pixel too. I know there are plugins and tools to reduce them (I have installed some and switched from Chrome), but it is an interesting difference.

Finally did it. I've always been an android user. Been a nexus/pixel user since the Galaxy Nexus. I still love android but I think it is time I saw how the other half lives.

Just FINALLY snagged a iPhone 13 Pro Max in gold (I literally pressed refresh ALL DAY yesterday and slowly watched the stores closer and closer to me get stock of this phone lol). I should be able to pick it up today. I'm very curious to see if I'll be able to handle the limitations of iOS in exchange for what I hope is superior hardware. Very much looking forward to having epic battery life. I've never had a phone before where battery life wasn't a complaint. I'll have until Jan 8th to see if the iPhone is something I can live with for at least a year.

Wish me luck.
