I just had the complete reverse of your experiences as by chance my sister asked me to help upgrade her iPhone 8 to 13 while I am in the UK and also her Ipad 4 to latest mini, plus her friend who had a IP6 took the 8 so I also did that upgraded for her.

I thought what better time to see how far Apple had come since I last owned an Iphone as this should be a breeze as literally Apple to Apple :)

Well quite frankly I was shocked and contra to what we read on MR there is no way my sister who's not a complete numpty on technology could of done this and her friend with the IP6 would of been worse off.

From the start the IP8 would not scan the Apple QR code but the IPad 4 would, the transfer screwed up account passwords and other accounts whilst you waited for all apps to be downloaded from the store that never questioned you on revised permissions etc we read so much about

Endless 2 step verifications that bizarrely goes to iPad and not the iPhone or both and the extent of menu scrolling is almost exhaustive. Of course the new Apple swiping through me and my sister for days as she lost her back button :)

Transferred VPN settings and Apps locked up as one prevented the other from upgrading and downloading

Her bank apps were screwed up and we could get one resolved but the other needed a visit to local branch to sort, so her Apple pay and wallet was locked up for several days

Laggy apps especially on screen rotations and even though she only has few apps several these were not optimised for Ipad and no landscape mode, I did not expect this at all :(

I also got all her photos sorted and other files by using Onedrive so she has access to all, as her surface laptop is infrequently used now she does not run her charity

The amount of Ads and extent of subscription requests really hit me even from a simple calculator app she uses to Apple TV with add placements etc

As she had a 3 months free trial on Apple TV that was good as I OD'd on 8 episodes catch up of the foundation :D but even that was buggy and often would not resume after a small break to the toilet etc

I can't say I was impressed and the whole processes was certainly no better if not worse on some counts over an Android upgrade

Still my sisters happy despite we could not get an IW7 as they are like hens teeth in UK and the IPad that comes with a charger suits her other than having to swap cables as IP13 is not USB-C like the new Ipad mini.
The upgrades sound like something isn't right with the backups, local or iCloud, and maybe fissy app or two - calculators are popular with malware crowd (photo apps to touch up? avoid like the plague - use reputable app like Adobe PS or Lightroom). Not normal to see ads and why AdGuard Pro or another is still a must. Transferring from ab older iOS to iOS 15 might be issue, and seamless. Dirty camera lens so the OCR image couldn't register stinks. Makes setups so simple.

What did y’all think of today’s presentation?
Not all that impressed really. I guess I'm one of the only ones that is not impressed with the "dynamic island" (god i hate saying that term already lol). Camera bump but the 13 PM camera is really good. The pill shape is better than the notch I suppose. Nothing to make me want to give up my 13PM or move away from my Fold 4

I think the Dynamic Island is clever... It’s not something where it would drive me back to the iPhone. But how it ties into the OS is crafty. I already know the camera on the Pro’s are going to be great… AOD, is pretty meh.

But all in all, it was a solid presentation. Didn’t really care for the AW’s and AirPod Pros, however… that Watch Ultra is going to have Samsung, Google and other WearOS OEMs going back to the drawing board.

well...I have upgraded every year since day one. Not going to stop now....Might even get the AW ultra to replace my AW 7

I just pre-ordered the AW ultra to replace my AW 5.

Except when it comes to battery life. I was expecting a bigger claim for the Watch Ultra. At least a full 48hrs.

I also think Android manufacturers will have to go back to the drawing board when it comes to AOD, cause making the entire lock screen AOD was a smart move by Apple.

What did y’all think of today’s presentation?
I thought there were two standout features. I liked the satellite SOS emergency service and the pill on top where it changes depending on the app. I thought the presentation on the pill was pretty slick. I was pretty much set on buying my first iPhone, 14PM until they dropped physical sims.

What did y’all think of today’s presentation?
I enjoyed it. I snarked through the cheesy parts with everyone else as per MacRumors tradition, but I thought the incremental upgrades were solid. Dynamic island is such a goofy name and will make for loads of jokes in the days ahead. But I like the concept and am looking forward to it.

I was disappointed in being informed the sim tray is going away in the US but I can work around that. It’s not a deal breaker for me. And thanks to the rumors it wasn’t a shock. We all knew it was a strong possibility.

I’m only getting the 14 Pro Max. Haha “only”. That’s more than enough money right there. I’m glad I can get rid of the 13 Pro for it. The 14 Pro cameras sound great. They had better perform great or it goes back.

I’m not planning on returning it over pwm sensitivity because I have ideas to work around that with my other phones. But I’m not putting up with a camera that is slow and focus hunts the way my 13 Pro did. My husband’s 13 Pro Max isn’t quite as bad so I guess I got a dud last year. I’ll be happy to send it on its merry way back to Apple.

I’m keeping my current watch. I would absolutely love to get the Ultra. I do spend a lot of time in the water. I don’t run across deserts…to be honest I am more likely to run to desserts 😆 but I think it’s a solid offering and I wish I were a statuesque woman like Brooke Shields or Gisele Bundchen so I could wear it and not look like I’m playing some sort of Marvel superhero.

However I’m excited some people here are getting it and I hope to see photos!

I already have all the ear buds and headsets I could need.

At some point I’ll go over the offerings again to see if there are any potential Christmas presents for my family. But for me it’s all about the 14 Pro Max.

I’m not really disappointed much about anything because the leaks were well vetted by most sources so I had a good idea which ones weren’t going to show up.

I’m guessing blue or green colors that were leaked will show up in the spring.

I genuinely still prefer the Android AOD. I think it's cleaner and less distracting, which is the point of AOD. Also, I love minimalism, and you just don't get that with Apple's implementation of AOD. I hope Google and Samsung don't copy Apple's AOD design.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I thought Apple would come up with something more clever for the AOD than just dimming the entire screen.

I’ve been thinking about this as well. On my S22 Ultra, you can easily tell the phone is display is off even though AOD is enable. But with Apple's implementation, I just know for the at least the first week, it's going to fool me into thinking the display is still fully on.

Another thing is, the iPhone lock screen seems less fun and personable.

I love my thumbs up emoji on the S22 Ultra. 🤣

But where Apple wins, is more glanceable info, with refreshing widgets. And I'm sure it will evolve rapidly as well. The evolution of AOD has been pretty stagnant from Android manufacturers over the years.

I wonder if there’s a way to make it look less busy somehow. They were showing it off and had busy wallpapers. Maybe go with a solid color.

Ok, I know this is the android section and we don’t like to give Apple credit, but the whole dynamic island thing is genius. The name is very Apppe and totally unnecessary and I would prefer no hole punch at all, but taking something that should be a negative and turning it into something useful is a nice touch.

The phone overall still feels very iterative, but should be great.

Yeah until you get bored with it 5 seconds later, it seems good to try and make a negative in to a positive but reality is it's smoke and mirrors and a gimmick I am sure kids will enjoy but tiresome for the majority

I like what I saw from Apple in the presentation. Aside from the cheesy name "Dynamic Island"? Really? Thats the best they could come up with lol. But it does seem to add a lot of functionality to what was once deadspace at the top of the display. They made it interactive which is smart!

I am wavering between getting the Space Black 14 PM or the Deep Purple. Some Youtube videos say the purple is more like a gray. Anyway...I have the black saved in Apple Store app on my iphone. All I got to do is puch the button and pre-order is done.

Anyway...now we have to endure all the apple fans who will undoubtedly brag how apple invented AOD

May I also add that I like that big watch only because I've always liked the rugged larger watches... But not sure I want to pay $800 for a watch that's really not going to do anything extra from my personal use

I don’t know.. I can see it from both angles. Yeah, it might seem boring after a short while… but I think it’s fascinating and useful.

When I think of a gimmick… it’s something that doesn’t add any value. Like those edge screen notifications back in the day.

Wow, you seem to have a lot of knowledge about it for someone that’s never tried it.

A lot of the people that have had hands on with the device say they were surprised with its functionality and that it acts as basically a live multitasking shade which doesn’t sound like a gimmick but rather something that turns dead space into something to increase productivity.

I too have the black 14 PM saved. Was about to go white, but I always slap back covers on iPhones anyways.

What do you all think about the esim? I know a lot of carriers in the US don't support ease him yet.. I also have friends at Verizon which tell me the pain on activations..
