Can't say I get the overt angst. I get the frustration but not the angst. People talk about quitting Apple, this is their worst experience. Firstly, how many people waited hours in line for an iPhone? How long have you waited today to update this stuff? Secondly, if you're posting here and trying to do it right now, you're a little more than a casual Mac user. Deal with it. It's launch growing pains that happen with the launch of everything anywhere; this is just virtual rather than standing in line for hours.

Breathe, relax and it'll happen. Eventually. Probably after many tries.

:apple:

You obviously dont rely on your phone for business and have to have it on pretty much 24 hours a day. Yeah I have waiting in line for HOURS for a phone. The very first Iphone, I got it, took it home, and waited for 24 hours for freekin Itunes to activate it....so yeah I should have KNOWN better, as we go through this crap EVERYTIME Apple updates ANYTHING.

This is what is causing the angst. THe days of a "Casual" cell phone user are long gone....this is a business device for 80% of us.

If you're on a PC, go into the AppData folder then your Apple Computer > iTunes folder > iPhone software updates, and delete the iOS5 update. I'm not sure the process of doing this on my Mac, so I just did it on my PC.

Then re-download the update and re-try the restore.

I had the same problem as everyone in this thread, and the restore is now working with no error messages (not complete yet, though).

Everyone.. The servers could be down. I have read and had the same issues ( error 3200 and even the phone not being recognized or stuck in DFU/Recovery mode) but just continue to try and update it. It will eventually give in and upload iOS 5 correctly. The key is patience, I know Im just as excited as you are.

Hope this helps.

Same here on iPad 1,1. Tried it 6 times. I really hope this is due to heavy server traffic at Apple and it'll work tomorrow.

Joy!!!

It took a couple of hours, a generic internal error, then a 3004 (I think?) internal error, my phone went into restore mode then an hour and a half recovery. But, I'm on iOS5.

I don't think the Airplane mode or anything else makes a difference. It's just a matter of getting lucky enough to get through to Apple's servers for the verification process.

Good luck to all. If your phone is bricked in recovery mode, it'll be OK. Once you get through to the servers and restore, you'll be on iOS5 and iTunes will restore your last backup.

I've done my iPhone but not my iPad. Tried my iPad 38 times and it keeps saying "internal error"!!!!

It also lost my data for my iPhone. The backup did not restore so I had to go to a previous backup nearly TWO months ago!! NOT HAPPY!!:mad::mad:

Keep Trying!

The level headed ones on here are right, keep calm and keep trying! I've been at it for the last 2 1/2 hours. Download went fine but 'internal error' kept coming up when iTunes tried to contact Apple server to verify update. Must be just overloaded. Tried again after reading some of the posts here and it's working, updating software as I speak :)

Deep breaths everyone, don't throw the rattles (or the iPhones) out of the pram just yet :apple:

4 tries and it worked for me.

My phone was COMPLETELY USELESS the whole time I was trying to update, after going into dfu mode initially (I was updating from Beta 7 so I was double nervous) the phone wouldn't work at all. In between getting back to recover mode (then getting the internal error), it would just loop through the apple logo, to the spinning load wheel, back to the apple logo. Then I would eventually get back to recover mode that itunes would register and try again.

But everyone was right, it will work eventually folks.

I got it to work after clicking restore over 15 times. If not needed I would wait until tomorrow. You will be setting for at least an hour before it will upgrade.

As mine is in recovery mode/connect to itunes mode, it every so often drops off to the apple logo and back to this, each time giving the message on my PC about it needing to be restored.

Thankfully the device reappeared.

Seems stupid though that you have to KEEP downloading the update each time if it fails a restore. For me thats 45mins per attempt

Im now running iOS5 also.

I have tried a few different approaches as I'm sure many of you have, then gave this a go and it has worked. Bizarre to think just quitting iTunes, plugging the phone into a different usb could work..

heres the steps listed on the link-

If you're like us, you couldn't wait to get your hands on the latest version of iOS. It brings a magnitude of enhancements to your phone, the most interesting (to us at least) is iMessage.

Unfortunately after waiting more than an hour for the download to complete, we were greeted with a "iPhone could not be restored" message in iTunes. We had already updated to the latest version of iTunes 10.5, so we knew this could not be the issue.

This is what we did to fix is:

1.Unplug iPhone and quit iTunes
2.Switch iPhone to Airplane mode
3.Plug iPhone into another USB port (not the same one it was in before)
4.Restart iTunes
5.Click on the Update button to accept the new software update

Took me about 15 mins after that to have it running.

PS- Still, may have just been finally getting through to the servers

this worked!

Mine is installing after about 60 attempts, why does it have to verify the update 3 different time while installing.

Actually I do. I'm in the military and haven't updated my phone during the duty day because I have to be reachable and even if it worked perfectly, wouldn't be reachable for probably 30 min to an hour, so am waiting until the end of the duty day. The only thing I was able to update after a few hours and many tries was my iPad...because it wasn't essential during the work day.

There are risks associated with any major software update, which is why you back the thing up before doing it. If you're phone got messed up in the update, you knew that was a possibility when you, wait for it, started the update process and saw you had to back the phone up. It's too easy. Making assumptions on here won't help, dealing with Apple directly probably won't help (today anyways). If you can't deal with the launch growing pains associated with anything ever launched, get a Motorola razr or something. I don't know.

It sucks; most everyone is in the same boat. This is how the game is played. Deal with it.

No you don't. The iPhone restore file is saved once in the iTunes application directory and isn't downloaded again.
