screw you dude. Some of us need our phones. I made the mistake in trusting that Apple could still do their jobs even with Steve Jobs gone. What a joke. Think about this. If their servers can't handle a simple registration confirmation, how the hell is iCloud supposed to manage huge data transfers????????
LOL What do you think Steve Jobs would have done? seen the apple logo in the sky, flew off and saved all the iPhones?

It's not the end of the world. It's annoying but that's all.

Edit: Airplane mode didn't work for me :/

This is really terrible. I need my phone at the moment and it's on the good ol' 'plug into iTunes'.

iOS 5 announced in June, release date set a week ago, Apple building giant data servers, and yet they STILL can't get their ***** to work.

This is a huge inconvenience, and in all honesty is probably the worst experience I have ever had from Apple.

Just terrible.

yeah.. this is true. its not a pleasant experience, but think about whats going on here. really think about how big this is.. we aren't talking hundred, or thousands. we are talking millions across the world trying to update at the same exact time. have some patience with apple. i would hate to see something like this going down with MS :D

I thought the update would be fairly painless. I know I should have waited just to be safe, but I too need my phone at the moment for work reasons and it's bricked. This is really appalling. There's no other word for it.

They must have known they didn't have the resources to cope with the demand, so they should have simply stopped people from starting the first part of the process. I'd rather be running iOS4 than having no phone at all!

My iTunes wont even acknowledge the fact that my phone is plugged in any more. After 1023981287 failed attempts to update

hold in your power button until the screen turns off (you should be able to tell). then it should go into recovery mode and it will recognize it

I'm upgrading to 10.7.2 to see if that's what the problem is. Unfortunately there's an estimate wait time of 18 hours to download it. Jesus. I can download a 6 gig torrent in 40 minutes. But it takes almost a day to download from Apple

Not everyone is downloading the same 4GIG torrent, at the same time, ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Apple updates on launch day taking a while is normal. Their servers are being hit by EVERYONE at the SAME TIME.

Apples to oranges.

Okay, third time seems to be the charm. Looks like it finally worked.

Still though, not impressed. I missed a very important call because of this.

over it

im gonna say the hell with ios 5. im stuck in recovery, but im downloading ios 4.3.5 then just going to hit option and restore and restore to 4.3.5 just to have a working phone. my opinion apple should have released over a period of time instead of having everyone try to do it at once 

Fixed. Got IOS5 on my IP4

Went into Settings, and reset settings. I think it was the first one on top, not data. Then I tried the update again and it worked. Not sure if this is what fixed it, but it did. Good luck. Post results. Make sure the apps are backed up. Right click on the Iphone symbol and select about the 4th one down, transfer purchases. Then when IOS5 goes in, you have to go back and sync the phone and select the apps you want to put back in. Do the app purchase backup first.

The thing that gets me is most of these are well past the point of downloading software...its just an authorization ping from apple...but mine is even past that, its already restored the software on my phone supposedly, then verifies it, then says its installing the firmware....then fails....sorry, but in my line of work, something dies while doing firmware install its usually bricked HARD and its time for an RMA....I am praying that this isnt the case, as I REALLY need my phone for on call this weekend..LOL.

Guess I can try a google redirect to my wifes phone....(boy she is gonna love this...I am taking HER phone cuz I bricked mine screwing around trying to upgrade on Day 1...LOLOL There goes any prayer I had for weekend Nookie!)

What an absolute fail on Apple's part. Why the heck did they think it would be a great idea to just release iOS 5 to everyone at once. They should have rolled it out by timezone, country or something.
