I swear. You'd think they'd do it time zone by time zone to ease everyone on the new update.

The iPad got updated on the first attempt... But I'm on the 8th try with the iPhone.

ok.. i think mine went through? it finally got through the restore and my phone finally turned back on. i don't know whether it has iOS 5 or not? it says restoring apps right now and itsnt on my phone screen, so i can't see which software is running. i guess i will wait for the apps to restore, even though i can open my phone like normal and everything.

I know there are a lot of threads already about the error, so I'm sorry about starting ANOTHER one. However, since there are so many threads I don't want my fix to get lost in the clutter.

It's a shame your thread was merged since your solution works great.

I tried to reply to your thread and thank you, but by the time I did, it had been merged so the reply showed up here, lost in a sea of posts. Just wanted to make sure I thanks, again.

You obviously dont rely on your phone for business and have to have it on pretty much 24 hours a day. Yeah I have waiting in line for HOURS for a phone. The very first Iphone, I got it, took it home, and waited for 24 hours for freekin Itunes to activate it....so yeah I should have KNOWN better, as we go through this crap EVERYTIME Apple updates ANYTHING.

This is what is causing the angst. THe days of a "Casual" cell phone user are long gone....this is a business device for 80% of us.

I'm sorry but I have to agree with Danny Mac, you and any others here losing it over the difficulties encountered updating your iDevice need to relax. Did Apple take control of your phone and force you to update right now? I'm sure your phone was working perfectly before you tried your update--you got excited for this update just like the millions of other users and just can't wait. And if you thought it would go perfectly smooth, you are either new to Apple or just a bit delusional. New product release, major software update, etc., all have issues of some sort or another and while yes, this is certainly frustrating is shouldn't have been totally unexpected--happens every time.

If your iPhone is crucial to your business/work, why on earth would you think it was a good idea to try this within a couple hours of launch in the middle of the day when you admit you cannot work without your phone?

No you don't. The iPhone restore file is saved once in the iTunes application directory and isn't downloaded again.

?!?!

Each time I have tried it, by clicking check for updates earlier, and now restore (as phone stuck on connect to tunes screen), it downloads it again. :/

I looked in that App folder someone said, but nothing in it really?:/

Just keep hitting the restore button. It will eventually work. I got the 3014 error too many times to count... It's finally finished and well into the copying videos and photos back to the device.... it will still be a while before it's usable, but it looks like it's all in proper order now.

I agree with the post above - once you have the software downloaded and verified - I don't quite understand why it has to re-ping the apple servers at a time when the phone is completely bricked ... Would be fine if it failed but I still had IOS4 running fine... instead we are left in "restore" mode which leaves the device useless.

Workaround for 3gs

Had same problem - 5 or 6 times the same message trying to update my 3gs.

Couldn't bother to wait the hours and hours it was going to take to upgrade to 10.7.2 so found alternative...

Hope this works for others:
- If you're using the Onavo app, disable profile
- Hard reset phone holding down home and power button
- In iTunes, hold Option and click restore, then find ipsw file in the iPhone Software Updates folder
- To do this, hold Shift, Command and G, then enter /Users/(Your user name)/Library/iTunes

Took ages, but finally worked!

Good luck

Finally!!!

After 3 long hours and probably a hundred tries, just as I was about to give up as my iPads progress bar slowly passed 3/4 complete (usually when I get the 3004 error), I suddenly hear this wonderful *chime* sound and my iPad greats me with a friendly "Welcome"!!! Seriously, I've gotten just about every error I can think of and the thing was stuck in FU mode the whole time. You really do need to just have patience! (...and a low temper!!!)

Not sure if it was just chance, but as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, selecting 'restore' rather than 'update' seemed to have successfully installed iOS5 onto my phone.

Hope it works for you all as well. :apple:

Gotta say, this apologist **** is pretty annoying.
("Everybody around the world is trying to connect right now! Be patient!")

I am sitting here, locked out from my phone (which, like many other people, my professional reputation hinges on having access to in a timely fashion) because Apple failed to properly prepare for today's rollout. That's all there is to it.

This is incredibly frustrating.

All these people whose "professional reputation hinge on having access to [their phones] in a timely fashion" should probably not rush to get software updates the day they come out - in the middle of a work day. This could happen with any software update from any company - not just Apple. Wait until the weekend, or at least the end of the work day (next week) if you have to do it on your work computer. It's hilarious that you would subject your precious phones to such a thing during a time that you might need them. I'm sure this is incredibly frustrating (I, myself, am struggling with the same thing right now), but your frustration is misdirected; it should be directed at yourself.

Agreed! And, perhaps they should wait for a week or so to make sure there are no bugs :p

i'm not buying this - its your own fault crap. apple released the damn thing today. when you plug your device in it tells you to upgrade.

Now, if they said "this might take a while because we simply don't have the resources" it would be one thing - but they didn't.

on top of that, there is nothing on the "support" page that tells you this. they say it might be a firewall or stupid crap like that, but it is clearly their own fault.

i love apple products, and i have a TON of them - but this is their fault, not the customers. stop being a fanboy and be a person for a second.

I think that all these "tricks" people are posting (airplane mode, option+click restore etc) is just pure coincidence!
I've tried updating my iPad for last two hours and last 20 attempts were exactly the same, and finally it is updated :)

Just keep trying!!!

I have found the folder, it is in "roaming" not "local".

Inside the iTunes > iPhone Software Updates folder there is a file "iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore".

Do I just double click that to start the restore to my device? Or do I need to click Restore in iTunes a certain way?

I disagree. I think the fault lies with Apple for this. If the update was not meant for everyone then they could of handled it better by either trickling the update out or adding more systems in preparation. The fact that they announced it and now their servers can't handle it is a huge snafu for apple.

Gee Apple, who would have thought that people would want to upgrade the sadly antiquated iOS4 to cutting edge iOS5 on the first day? How could you have predicted your servers would be pounded on launch?

My phone is a brick. Won't update, it's supposed to restore but it's not restoring and my screen is blank. It's now a brick.

Way to go, Apple. Thank you very much.

you will never change the mind of a fanboy - to them, apple can do no wrong, its always a user error with them.
