ugh

I'm trying to update my Verizon iPhone 4 to iOS 5 and I keep getting the error message too. Now, I'm getting a more detailed one "The iPhone ... could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."

HELP! :(:(:(

Success at Last!!!

Evening all!

OK so im in the UK and after about an hour and half of repeatedly trying to update it has gone through. There were a couple of false starts, but attempt number god knows what went through. :D

So i guess my advice is to keep trying, or wait till later to update the phone.

Now to do my iPad.....

I had the "ineligible build" problem, but fixed that by editing the 'hosts' file... then hit the 'internal error' wall on the first attempt. Just tried again and everything went swimmingly. I'd advise patience to all trying to upgrade, and like has already been said before: don:t go doing anything that wil screw up your phone!

Go into settings and sign out of the app store.

Put your phone in airplane mode.

Reset your phone by holding down the power button and home button simultaneously until it restarts.

Hook up with iTunes and proceed with update.

Phone rebooted and got further than before, but promptly failed with the same error again.

Tried Airplane mode and didn't work for it. Airplane has nothing to do with it- it's just luck and getting the right spot at the right time. I've nearing 40 tries and lost all my iPhone backups, etc and I still haven't made it through the error.

Apple just did this WORLDWIDE update involving every iPhone hooked up to iTunes.... at the same minute. Stupidest thing I've ever seen from Apple. Laughably poor planning.

Edit host file (open finder, browse to /private/etc/) open in textedit, add # at the beginning of the last line (should start with 74, and include a space after the #). Save and retry. Should sort your problem :)

Wrote this quick how-to for those on OS X looking to brute force this as quickly as possible. Hopefully the link is appropriate. If not, feel free to remove.

There's is NO QUICK FIX. It's whether or not you make it in the query line for updating. People keep posting all these little things like spinning in their chair 3 times and hitting airplane mode.

It doesn't matter. It's luck.

I am sorry, I don't believe it was coincidence. The load went fast and flawless when I engaged Airplane mode ON. First time. The speed etc of everything was notable.

just my 2 cents

Finally got my iPad to update after "Internal error" msg on the 7th attempt. Took some cussing and a lot of fist shaking, but it's working!

Beyond annoying.

Considering Apple is starting a CLOUD service, you would think they would get some proper servers.

Understand!

I updated one computer with the Lion and iTune updates. I am currently updating both Apple TV's. I am holding off on my other two computers, my wife's iPhone, and Aperture updates until later.

I have never seen so many updates so fast!

BTW, my MobileMe accounts have worked poorly since Saturday.
