Well, that's my lawn too! :p

I wonder how much of the flack that is given about iMessage a result of frustration with the lack of other hoped for/anticipated enhancements for iOS? I have a sense that if Apple had announced dark mode, iOS Finder, and a few other asked-for things, everyone would be high-fiving the iMessage enhancements.

I doubt it. MacRumors is not a happy place these days.

Isn't it all over the new interface?

Kinda like the stupid microphone icon that's there in iOS9?

I'm hoping we can turn it all off, and just have the usual text area with a send button.

Can't turn it off, but I've been using it for a short bit today. As someone who was not happy/impressed with it during the keynote, I can honestly say it's not bad in person. If you don't want to use the new features, they aren't like "in your face" or anything. The new options are hidden behind an arrow that slides out to reveal the new options. Granted, if your friends want to blast you with all of the new reply options, I'm not sure if there will be anything you can do to prevent it...

Well, it seems like they are basically no more than something like that microphone icon in iOS 9, which is easily enough avoided if desired.

So I saw in screenshots in another thread that, on the Mac, the section of the System Preferences app that tells you which apps are using iCloud storage now lists Messages as being one of those apps, and that wasn't there before. Apparently checking and unchecking this setting doesn't do anything yet, but I'm hoping this means that real cloud syncing is finally coming to Messages. I was definitely annoyed that they added all the emoji stuff at the expense of this kind of (pretty basic, IMO) feature, but maybe they didn't! Time will tell... here is a link to that thread.

If anyone who has access to iOS 10 beta sees any similar or corresponding setting, I'd love to know!

"Hidden behind an arrow" doesn't sound too bad at all. Thanks for the info.

OMG iMessage what the FU@Ck was Apple thinking. iMessage is a mess, looks like an amateur built a messaging app and trying to pass it off as professional. Im not even going to go into the Notification screen ... I know its beta but maybe Apple should of waited this is too messy and laughable

Anyone else NOT a fan of all the crap they're shoving into iMessage? It looks freaking terrible and possibly really annoying depending on who your contacts are.

Was really hoping for iMessage on iCloud (like WhatsApp Web) and Apple Pay within Messages, but not this..

I love it.

Stickers are something I have been BEGGING for in iMessage ever since LINE got me addicted to them. I love all the other additions, and apps within iMessages will be really interesting (its been really nice in Facebook Messenger so far).

The new iMessage features only work with other iOS 10 users, right?

That's really the only thing I hate about iOS10. I'm not a fan of emoji's though ...I just feel like the messenger is AIM in 1999...

Why would you be upset about it? These are options. You don't have to use them.

Messaging is THE most used communication medium today. Moreso the case for younger audiences. Apple has fallen behind on how to express yourself, compared to apps like kakao and we chat and line, and they are catching up now.

Older people see the 30 minutes spent on emojis during WWDC as a horrible fail in the software industry, but these are the features that people want these days. It sounds stupid, but even Harvard grads spend a lot of time using emojis. Personally I don't, and I hate them, but I understand why Apple is spending so much time on them. Again: it's all about how people communicate today. Just like what Craig joked: the children of tomorrow will have no grasp on the English language. He knows this is silly. He knows it's below his developers educations. But this is an area they must endeavor.

This is also going to be great for AAPL stock because it increases loyalty to the iMessage/iPhone platform while some other aspects stale.

While Samsung goes with fringe and new (eg VR and edge displays), Apple continues to perfect the basic features we use most. And while Samsung may get some attention in the short term, Apple is going to hold on the long term when people become completely dependent on its messaging platform.

When your family and friends all get on iOS, and your communications are all on iMessages and you rely on its expressive capabilities (not available on android while they toy with VR), you have a built in loyalty to Apple. When your workplace gets on board, it's going to be a huge loyalty force.

A lot of people are going to love it.

The thing is 90% of people use messaging and that is why they added all these features to it.
From my observations, tech forum members are not the target audience of OS developers. Rightfully so IMHO.

Perhaps they were thinking they should provide what a lot of their typical users already use in other messenger apps and seem to want?

And just like AIM back then, you can easily use it just for the same things it was used for before any additions were made--just text messaging--or you could use more if you want to.

So i shouldnt use imsg now because i don't want gimp msgs or stupid dope slams?
Yeah, great plan.
No, you shouldn't use iMessage because you probably shouldn't be using any Apple devices at all seeing as how you hate most everything that Apple does.

But hey, if you enjoy bashing your head into a brick wall and complaining about how much it hurts, who are we to stop you?

Seems hokey to me. That is the reason my friends and I use Groupme vs other 3rd party messaging apps. The interface is clean and minimalistic without goofy gimmicks that look like it was designed for children.

But honestly I'm not even a fan of emojis so my friends and I are probably a minority when it comes to design and UI. But when they showed the background fireworks I caught myself rolling my eyes. Tool to toy....

And then the same could be said why other people use other messengers that provide stickers and all kinds of other effects.

Good point. Be nice if the people that wanted those gimmicks used those apps. Not the app I conduct a business through.
