Actually, I am Tim cook. Under a fake name for research. Just wanted to see if you all really wanted a new mini.

I am still unsure.

Yes? No? Maybe?

Yeah, some googling found one thread about someone who didn't qualify for a free OS upgrade because the product had been registered to its first owner and it had been more than 180 days or something like that? Second owner missed the window, I guess.

Think an open box mini will have Mavericks on it? Seems like chances would be good, but I guess there's no way of definitively knowing how long a returned item has sat on a warehouse shelf.

I just bought 3 mac minis from an Apple Store and they all had Mountain Lion on them!

Hmmm, got mine from B&H in January. It came with Mavericks. I totally blew the OS up a couple of weeks ago, formatted the SSD via Target Disk Mode and reinstalled using Internet Recovery. That process also installed Mavericks.

And right on schedule the Apple Store is down. Finally a new Mini! (Or not.)

;-)

No, it's back up! With a picture of the new mini on the front page! It is square with round corners, is white with a somewhat coarse paper-like texture, and on the top it has the Apple logo and an e-ink display showing an inspirational message that shifts between various languages...

On a more serious note, my NUC was struck by lightning two days ago. So with the right updates on the Apple Store it's a chance for some easy cash for Apple!

its been a while since i last posted here. It feels like yesterday when I was following the threat waiting for the mac mini 2012 to come out...long delay as well. Thats what I have now.
I was thinking that mac mini was a mini version of Mac pro but not anymore.
Since Mac pro was updated and its really small now comparing it with the previous versions, they should either change the name of a forthcoming mini or they should really change the design and the size and make it a proper mini.
I dont think that I will upgrade this time but a new fresh look will be a plus to boost their sales.

You heard it here first: Apple's website says we'll be right back...

I'm glad i'll be keeping my money in my pocket for who knows how much time until apple updates mini or downgrades mac pro. This move leaves 2 options i think. Redesign or kill. Come on apple choose one and do it.

my last hope:

1) a new "retina" Thunderbolt Display will be released in the fall

2) alongside Apple will release a new mini with with dGPU (to have enough power for the retina display)

3) because it would be strange if they release a new display AND the Mac mini has not got the graphics power to run it ...

Unless there's a silent upgrade in the next three or four weeks, I'd say the last hope for an updated Mac Mini in 2014 will be September/October, when they refresh the remaining product lines for the Holiday season...

Other than that, I'd say the very very last hope will be when new processors ship in 2015...if not, then it's dead.

Really the last hope for a new mini it's along with the next iPad event (maybe iPhone event), if not, maybe Apple will not update the mini until Broadwell at mid 15. When Skylane have made enough noise to catch all attention.

I don't see the Desktop Retina Display launch mandatory married with the new mini, as sure will imply a new iMac (R-iMac / iMac Pro).

Most due the next desktop retina display will be a Mac-Pro related product since title high price point (1000~1500 and up).

No dGPU will come back to the mini. Iris/Iris Pro are enough to power 4k with thunderbolt 2.
