Why's everyone getting thier collective pantaloons in an uproar?
A new MacMini should absolutely not come!

PCs ARE DEAD. Sure, the iMac is the last vestige of it for a nice, stylish way to fade into the sunset.
But a seperate CPU component to which a keyboard, trackpad & monitor are attached?!?
Back away from the desk, Pops ....

Aaaahhhh, a very scary thought just struck me:

1) THERE WAS NO "Mac mini server MID 2014" on that boot camp support list!!!!

2) this could mean APPLE will release a crappy crappy new super slim Mac mini with the same internals like the crappy crappy low end iMac.

3) they will just keep selling the Mac mini server late 2012 for the server farms!!!!

Also could mean that a mac mini sever doesn't need the new updated internals, so true Mac mini server users don't care about 4K video, neither dual Thunderbolt 2,but surely loves fireware...

So basically means just Haswell-Iris/Iris Pro added to the formula, unlikely a new form factor, just new internals updated as on current iMac (please Apple surprise us with dGPU or at least Iris pro )

alright, let's think positive!!!

By the way the 4.5W Broadwell SKUs are being produced, like, NOW

Core M 5Y10 and 5Y10a: Week 29 (mid July) [2C, 2T, turbo up to 2Ghz, GT2 gpu]
Core M 5Y70: Week 33 (mid August) [2C, 4T, turbo up to 2.6Hz, GT2 gpu]

These are supposedly anti-iPad CPUs for 2-in-1 Windows tablets

BUT

what if the "Mid 2014 Mini" is a "hockey puck" kinda device, maybe AppleTV sized, and is meant to be a complement to the Mac Mini line up, so the 2012 models would still be sold, until new (marketed as 4K capable) Minis with Broadwell-H 37W quad cores with GT3e gpu are released next Spring.

Yes it would be weird to release a new form factor without an announcement but that happened before:

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/10/20Apple-Unveils-New-iMac-With-21-5-and-27-inch-Displays.html

Just a press release and off you go.

On another note, for the "I WANT TO BELIEVE in Apple early access to Broadwell" crowd, let's recap when it happened before

http://forums.appleinsider.com/t/57844/apple-seeking-intels-woodcrest-and-merom-chips-early

(yes, this has been a thing since day1 of Apple-Intel relationship)

https://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/05/apple-gets-nehalem-early-h264-and-vmware-performance-boosts/

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1148142/

plus a couple of other instances concerning Macbook Air CPUs.

Where are you getting this info? Last info on Core M Broadwell was that they won't be available until the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015

maybe apple will release new tech where the new mini doesn't have to run bootcamp. this could be justifiable cause they may have been working 2+ years on it

I'm afraid the Ivy Bridge Mini and the Ivy Bridge Macbook Pro 13" (price cut down today) could be the last macs with (easily) accessible 2.5" hdd/ssd. The next mini could be an Air-without-the-screen in terms of innards. Just a stick of flash for storage.

Provided the 2.5" SATA drive is replaced by a replaceable mSATA drive, this won't be an issue to me. Hopefully, Apple will take a leaf out of the NUC book and include a replaceable mSATA SSD, user-upgradeable SODIMMs and a Thunderbolt 2 port to enable daisy-chaining of external storage. That way, it'll be small and flexible.

I'm also hoping that the 'mid-2014' Mac mini if/when it shows up gets a new, smaller form factor that better competes with the NUC. The old one's been around since 2010. I really don't want this to be like early 2009 when, after waiting what seemed like an eternity for an update, the mini kept the same form factor that had been around since the G4 mini, despite having masses more power...

An absurd statement that couldn't be further away from the truth.
There will always be people who need PCs (in the real sense of the word) to work with (or do you think that a tablet can do everything a PC can?!), and not everyone wants/needs an iMac.

If the Mac Pro is overkill for someone, they don't care for portability and they:
a) think that a 21.5" iMac is not big enough and 27" iMac is too big;
b) already have a perfectly working screen and don't want to waste it;
c) want to use two screens (most likely they'll want them to be same);
d) want a machine they can connect to a TV at home;
e) want a desktop but don't have the budget for an iMac;
f) don't want to risk not having a machine just because a screen fails.

In all of these cases, the product they want is a Mac Mini.

Hi guys, this tweet from Macminicolo clearly shows that they know something we don't:

@macminicolo
We've heard a few things from single sources, but hoping to get some confirmations. Current gen minis will still be better for some uses.

In the past they demonstrated to have some good sources inside Apple and they talk about "current gen minis" being better for some uses, which to me looks like the first confirmation that the new mini (which is almost certainly coming :eek:) will have a new form factor with little to none upgradability.

I'm not so sure I expect a major redesign now, as Haswell processors still run pretty hot, so it would make more sense for Apple to wait for Broadwell chips to become available.

However, an internal redesign might involve PCIe flash storage, in which case the current Minis would be better for RAID-0/RAID-1 setups (as you won't be able to have properly matched drives with PCIe + SATA). There's also the possibility of soldered RAM.

PCIe flash and soldered RAM could mean a smaller case I suppose, but I think they'd end up limiting themselves to 35W and 45W processors; there are still good options within that bracket, but that might exclude an Iris Pro option unless they go with laptop parts. It would make more sense to keep the current case, use any freed up space to improve cooling, and wait for Broadwell. The switch to PCIe and soldered RAM alone would mean current Minis would retain some benefits; Apple may even keep the current model around as a server model since the current processors are still perfectly good for that use-case and being able to fit two matching hard drives is far more important than better integrated graphics.

Soldered ram it's only for low end models.

Switching to a new form factor, allows for something very important for a wide range of user : ultra quiet passive cooling.

Many people use Mac for Audio production, an über-quiet mini will be a hit at recording studios, could be achieved thru a Mac Pro like design without fan, and with ssd as only storage (allowing 2.5 hdd), a redesign comes, it's sure but maybe only the deletion of firewire for a 2nd Thunderbolt.

What a stupid comment. A new Mini is definitely on the way, it was leaked.

Me thinks the updated Mini will be similar to what we saw with the MBP vs current rMBP with some of the upgraded parts being soldered onto the motherboard. So yes i'm getting myself ready for a Mini that will lack essential upgrades. For me that is not a problem as I want a second Mini to connect to my 40" Samsung HDTV via HDMI. :)

----------

Question for everyone, can I use my Apple BT keybd and Trackpad on both Mini's? Obviously both won't be turned on simultaneously.

I think the biggest news is Apple has not killed off the Mini yet. :)
