Mac mini major updates tend to only happen when the current processors go out of production.

You may mean when they get superceded with a "newer" version. When Intel introduces new CPUs the old ones don't disappear entirely.

The minis are a lagging product line with little concern about performance.

Previously Mini tracked MacBook/MBP 13" processors. There were/are mobile not lagging product line. Typically there was a gap between Macbook update and Mini update but not huge.

MBP 13" is stuck now. So until the Mini gets a new "dance partner", it has lost traction also.

They haven't tracked the MBP 13" since the 2012 models because the i5 of the MBP 13" went in the entry level Mac Mini and the i7 of the 15" MBP went in the quad Mac Mini. They just didn't get SSDs are standard like the Retina MBPs.

What? If simply to go the online store page for the Mac Pro the ordering page has TWO display types on it. There is no new Apple docking station/display, but there is a relatively new to the market one there.

There is a display. Perhaps not the one some folks want. .

If you want to use that logic, there are 30 displays you can choose from, just on other websites and from other manufacturers.

We're quite clearly talking about Apple displays. The person I quoted speculated that when a new Apple display is released, a new Mini may be released. I said that there's no new Apple display for the Mac Pro, so why would there be one for the Mini.

I don't think the mini will go completely SSD, at least for the time being. I think with a desktop, people want the option of TB storage so I think they will keep at least the fusion drive as an option. Hopefully they make the 256GB SSD standard with the option of 512GB SSD and 256/1TB fusion drive as options.

I've been impressed with the doubling of hard drive capacities every couple years for a while now, but I think we've reached a point right around the TB range where for most people's purposes, it's overkill.

Mac Mini 2014

I've been in the market for a new computer. I always wanted an apple product but they were really expensive. The Mini would be a great choice in my opinion because it's one of the cheapest options. Everyone asks what a person will be doing with the computer. I plan on using various DAW's for some music production, playing light-graphic games, and also doing project using software for my industrial design major. If the Haswell iteration of the Mac mini can do all that smoothly i think I will be fine. Is all this possible or do I need to save up for a Macbook Pro?

Actually you can do all that with the current version i7. No need to wait for Haswell unless you choose to.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned but Windows XP will end support in April and there are still a lot of households on Windows XP who will migrate to a new PC, I just saw 3 articles today warning people that it's ending soon. Don't you think this would be the perfect opportunity for Apple to release the new mac mini in a marketing punch to grab those shares of people still on XP thinking of going to a mac doesn't have to be expensive. The mini fits that bill.

I am one of those people still using XP but want to get a mac looking at the mini but don't want to buy older model if new one is coming soon. I have a few more weeks to decide, new mini, older mini (if new one doesn't come) or back to a windows PC w/ windows 7.

Same here. I've been using XP at work (since that's the computer they had for me when I started 4 years ago). I've been wanting to move to Macs (that's what I have at home and it's what I prefer) but I have been waiting for the next mini. Wanted the best deal for my money and something that will have the processing power to last for a while (or my work's money) since I'll have to buy a new batch of software as well.

Right, you can still get a Dell with windows 7 business for less than $1000.00 with quad core and decent specs. I won't get a windows 8. But I really want to switch to a mac since I have an iphone and i'm completely tied to iTunes with my music. It's the perfect time to switch to a mac for me.

I won't get a windows 7 since I'll be in the same boat with windows 7 four years from now than I will be with XP. That said, I could get a Dell but this stupid machine has caused me so much annoyance i want to take it out back, office space style. Also, mac mini has the added advantage that I can just take the box home with me from work so I can use software that's too expensive to run on my macbook at home.

I was in the same boat as both of you. I bought a rMBP when they came out last September and used it for 14 days. Although I really liked it I decided to return it because of the small 13" screen and I really wanted a desktop. I held out a few weeks to see if a new mini was coming by Christmas. The first of the year I found a deal on a open box I5 and bought a 840evo to go with it. I love this thing and I'll probably keep it for a media server when the new one comes. I installed Linux Mint on my old HP with XP and still use it for my CAD software. So put Linux on your XP machines dual boot and you'll be safe until the new one comes. One way to deal with it. :) Or get a refurb and resell it when the new one is released.

People who still have XP at home don't know it's not going to be supported any more, and if they did, they don't care, and if they care, they're not going to spend $700 on a mac. They'll buy some $300 windows box or laptop.

Oh ok thanks for that useful information. So the only reason to get a MBP over a MM is portability? The only update for this machine is the processor and the addition of Thunderbolt 2 ports?

They will know when the popup from M$ starts showing up if they are still getting patches from them. Your right about a lot won't care but they have no idea what the security risks are to their personal and financial information. Maybe some will buy new Chromebooks or upgrade to 7 maybe 8/8.1 and some will buy Macs like me and a few others that are fed up with Windows. Some will just get tablets because they don't need a PC anyways.

not really, HD4000 is way to weak, even for "light-graphic-games".

definitely wait for haswell update with iris pro ;)

The HD4000 is OK for light gaming. I play Rocksmith on my i3 laptop with HD4000 (albeit at 1366x768 since that's the resolution of my laptop) and it's tolerable.

yes i think if you go for i7 will come with Iris Pro, other wise Hd 5000..but still both better than HD4000 for more than 70% and i think Iris Pro is 90% better than Hd4000

Yes, next mac mini is better for those who can wait and not an option for those who cannot.

and i think they will redesign it a little bit...i think they dont need that space inside anymore, and they can reduce it somewhere between apple tv and current mac mini

Smaller never seems to be better in the case of Apple products: no more user-upgradeable parts.

Apple don't care about the low-end of the Mac lineup any more. They see the iPad as a viable replacement for people with less than 1,000 pounds/euro/dollars. Yeah, they're not functionally equivalent. But Apple don't care.

Neither the non-retina MacBook Pro nor the Mac mini have been updated since 2012.

You can say goodbye to both products this year. Think I'm wrong? Apple discontinued the white MacBook, and it was their best-selling Mac by far.

No, I'm not trolling. I have a 2012 13" MacBook Pro and a 2009 Mac mini. Both are great products. I don't know how I'll replace them in the future.

You're not trolling, but you're forgetting the number of businesses that are ramping up colo of mac mini's as servers, and that the server software was recently updated, and that this box is really the best viable option apple has for server-type functionality. I doubt they'd update the server software and then only let it run on a PITA-to-rack garbage can. These points alone are enough to keep the dream alive, at least for me and a few like me.

Therefore I respectfully predict you are wrong about this prediction. ;)

Counted 8 mac mini last night on apple.ie store and today 7, that's another glut, previsouly there had only been 1 and it was a server with 16GB & SSD drive which no none seemed to want, well at that price! ;)
