If we haven't seen it by this time next year, I think we will almost certainly need to convert to worshipping NUC, God of Actually Here And Now On The Shelves.
Speak for yourself. I don't worship anything, and neither need the specs and grunt of a NUC nor want the OS it uses.

The several years old Mac Mini I have now continues to serve my humble needs, hassle free. However, eventually the time will come to replace it with another Mac Mini, new generations of which will almost certainly keep coming…… in Apple's own good time.

Aha, Ars Technica does the same comparison that Tom's Guide makes, but reads the correct result out of it:

Skull-Canyon-NUC.012-980x720.png
The AMD m370x (used in the macbook pro) scores 2419 points.

The AMD m395 (used in the 5k imac) scores 6819.

of course, 2419 points isn't considered "playable." Probably less than 15 frames per second, when all is said and done. Definitely not Oculus Rift Ready.

I'm, not an Apple fanboy by an means but I am getting sick of NUC posts taking over this thread.

I am an SFF fanboy. Apple's Mini was a superb entry into the SFF world years ago; but other companies have been much more active than Apple for years now. So any discussion of new SFF topics will naturally involve products not made by Apple.

The double problem here is that (a) Apple's Mini still works perfectly well for the tasks it was designed to accomplish, and (b) Apple has not provided any hints as to the future of this device. So, really, there's pretty much nothing for Mini fans to talk about, and has not been for some years now. All the new ideas in the SFF space are being created by other companies...

Hoping for something. Abandoned the MacBooks after nearly 10 years of MB/MBP/rMBP. Need something staple and always-on at home.

This is a pretty long thread. What's the consensus on new Mac Minis at WWDC?
Pretty low. Frankly the current models will do the job for 99% of Mac mini customers. Far more likely WWDC will have new rMBPs and maybe MPs. These are sold as high performance machines.

I think the NUC posters are providing insight into where Apple could conceivably take the 2016 Mini. We all know we'll be disappointed in the end but dream big...

I'm almost certain the 2016 Mini will headline the WWDC next month. I've been known to get it wrong in the past though.

It's almost certainly coming?

You need to say it with conviction and absolute authority if you have to say it :)

I talked to my neighbor's 10 yr old kid. She told me that the new Mac Mini is most certainly coming!

Amateur astronomer, written in the stars type sure!

Please take my money...

For some it seems to be the Mini they dream of….. but without OS X, it's not a Mac Mini. That is almost certainly coming.

I find it odd that people want to defend Apple's decision to shortchange hardware. The only reason NUCs are being discussed is that the market has finally caught up to the form factor. In other words, it's clearly obvious you can offer good hardware at that pricepoint in that form factor. I get it - you think it's fine. I just wish as a designer that the mini was beefy enough to handle larger file sizes in design prgrams, but it's just not there.

One way or another it's coming. Considering the hardware the NUCs use, building a hackintosh out of one is the next step. I've been running a hack since the disappointing news of the last mini with zero problems and 100% functionality with virtually no customization at all. I'd like to get a genuine Mac product in a heartbeat, but the value has to be there. The NUCs coming out now are a pathway for people like me to get the hardware we need in the form factor we want. I just wish Apple cared enough to do something about it themselves.

How did you get iTunes movies playing on you Hack? That has been my concern and the reason I ave delayed on a Hack.

The NUC is a much better product now than it was at first. It took a few iterations before it became worthwhile. It's also expensive (in many cases) for what it is. The cost of the parts isn't substantial, and they make a good profit on them. The ability to swap in different parts and customize them is nice, but they quickly get expensive when you start adding in SSDs (M.2 in particular), memory, special covers, etc. Apple has plenty of experience in miniaturization, and could potentially produce a smaller version of the Mac Mini; the key is sourcing the parts for the price they are willing to pay. While there are plenty in here on this thread that suggest they are willing to pay for a mini that meets their desired specifications, it may not be enough to cover the costs of the update. They'll wait until they have a product that has a wider appeal before they target niche markets. I love my 2011 mini, and it has done well for all these years. Even with minor updates, I don't have a need to purchase a new one until I transition to 4k (which I would love to do, but I'm not able to yet).

I can't honestly answer that - I've never used iTunes for movies. Everything else that I've ever used works fine, even iMessage, but I'm curious now if it works or not.

The only thing that doesn't work right on my Big Hac is Apple Music videos, they just get stuck at 0:00. Or maybe they used to get stuck and now it's fixed, but I am not going to subscribe to AM just to check that.
