I've just ordered this system:
Mac Mini
Intel Core i7 (Quad Core, 2.3 GHz Turbo, 6MB)
Mavericks
4 GB Ram
Intel HD Graphics 4000

I intended to add a ssd but apple store said I didn't need it for Xcode, webbrowsing, word processing and movie watching. Actually they even said the i5 would be sufficient but I decided on the i7. They really helped me out! I will put in more ram (apple store suggested 8, but I'm going for 16). I'm also grateful for all the tips received on the forum :)

Nice, I think at this point I'm more or less just waiting for either the update or discontinue news. Either case I'll make sure I secure myself a mac mini.

you can always put in an aftermarket ssd in an external for a faster boot experience

Pats my G4 Mini "You live another week little buddy" :D

Mine too - the poor thing had HDD surgery last week but coughed its way back to life. Either the new one comes out and I retire it, or it dies and I get whatever is out there at that point.

I'm really hoping it's soon, I want to set up Mavericks server to run Xcode builds on .. that's clearly rather beyond the current box.

The store is right. The i7 is really for video processing or other applications with multiple simultaneous tasks.

You can wait on the RAM -- see how it goes first. Especially since RAM prices have recently jumped up -- wait for them to drop back down again.

No kidding! I was going to update my new(ish) mac mini, but an 8GB DDR3 upgrade costs $75+ now! I got the exact same upgrade a year ago for under $50...

I getting sick waiting on this mini refresh. I refuse to buy a 2-year old spec'd machine or invest in an iMac until we see retina support. Financially, a Mac Pro doesn't make any sense to me.

Over the years with my current mac mini, i've enjoyed upgrading RAM, SSD and CPU. The weakest element is the graphics support. I need to see good graphics support before investment.

I'll buy a mini with TB2 port immediately.

Can you wait until October?

If you buy a mini now, you will see a refresh in Sept/Oct. Most likely.

If you want "current" processors, the iMacs are the computers which Apple keeps current. Aside from financial reality, I wouldn't buy a current MacPro for a variety of reasons--wait for the next generations to get a truly worthy computer.

The dreams of a MacMini refresh in Q1 2014 are gone. Why a Q2 refresh seems logical is illogical. Knowing the 2-year refresh cycle Apple is now implementing in lower-end products, the October release date is almost concrete at this time.

It's just how it is. Buy now or buy later. Whining won't bring it faster.

You see will a huge performance improvements by replacing that HDD with SDD. It won't speed up your CPU or graphics of course but any applications, such as Xcode that use the file system will see performance boosts.

If you haven't used SSD before, you'll be surprised just how slow HDDs actually are and affect performance. They also show just how powerful CPUs are these days.

I do not agree. Going from a Mini 2,5 inch base drive to a 3,5 inch Seagate barracuda makes much more of an impression than from that barracuda to a Sammy 840 Pro. Those nasty fast 3,5 bitches are really capable.

Apple was alot better when Steve Jobs was around.
We get yearly updates with new products.

Now most of the products are either at mid life or do not buy status......

Somemore some guys still have the cheek to claim 2014 is the year of the mac.

good luck to them, I'm switching back to windows.
Got tired of waiting, no use buying a out dated computer at current prices.

It will be a hackers paradise.

If people started using non admin accounts almost all remote code execution exploits can be avoided. A study also suggested that 100% of IE critical patches could also be avoided.

Heard Steve Gibson mention it on Security Now podcast. I'll look for the source later.

A computer these days without an SSD is not really a computer. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but that is the truth.

That's an absurd (and hilarious) statement. There are a wide variety of users and use cases for a given machine, and not everyone requires state of the art performance.

I'm highly entertained by many of the discussions in these forums and how little resemblance they bear to the real world.

Somehow I don't fully agree

Cool! Have fun with Windows!

I agree with you partially.

I do not agree to have an older technology though at current pricing.
On one hand I do understand and appreciate the value of a mac. Believe me I simply love them, but on the other hand I feel also a little robbed when purchasing a product more than 2 years old to have the same pricing.

It's like paying now the same money for an iPhone 4s as for a 5s.

So in the same time, since I am also frustrated with this waiting process, I will probably end up buying a mini 2012 if by the end of the month nothing new comes up.
Better than using a Windows machine :)

Cheers mate.

I have also ordered the same system as grandM. I can't wait any longer as my G5 I bought in 2006 is just too long in the tooth and I need updated processing speed for the work I'm doing now. Plus I need to upgrade so I can have the ability to step up to iPhone 6 when it's released.

I don't always have to have the latest and greatest and with my luck, there will be a new model next week, but oh well....If you wait forever, there are always new models coming out.

On a side note, I found it very interesting that when I ordered from Mac Mall, I received a price of $759, but it was backordered for several days. Mine finally shipped, but now the price for the same system on Mac Mall is now $861

Joined up today just to say that, eh. Now off you go…... to enjoy the latest hardware running an OS seldom gets an update that people can be bothered with..

There is always another Tuesday coming up for the antsy here who want bragging rights to the latest gear.

For the rest, OSX updates come often enough, and now free of charge, and security updates and the like come as required, and keep Mac Mini's current for years.

I too need a Mac Mini and NOW! I hate to buy the old tech unless it's like 50% off. And the iMac is too expensive. Damn! I just might have to build a box and go with Windows 7 for now. I really don't mind Windows 7 but was hoping to go Mac :(

Why would Apple discontinue the Mac Mini and what would replace it? Isn't it a pretty popular item?

I don't agree with you partially, I agree with you completely :D It sucks that it's taking forever, but what I do like about a Mac is the ability to run Windows on it. I don't care much for Xcode, so when I'm writing an assignment in C++, I do it using Visual Studio. I have Windows on my machine for VS, SQL Server, and to play Counterstrike. As others have always said, you can sell the Mini you buy for a small loss, and just upgrade when the new one does finally come out.

I highly doubt that Apple will discontinue the mini!

It is the perfect beginner Mac for people who want to switch and it's also the only mac that is suitable for server usage. (huge server market)

LOL, someone finally responded :) I still agree with my statement. Spinners are SLOW and outdated. The truth hurts.

The 5400 on my mini took minutes to boot up. My SSD seconds. Life is short.

It's kind of funny to see everyone jump on the Windows hate. As a current Windows 7 user I haven't had many issues at all with it. My quest to get a mac mini was to get a nice small desktop computer that's somewhat quiet and reliable not so much to hate on Windows.

Now that I'm ready to make a purchase there are more choices in the marketplace for something small, like the nuc(s), the brix(s), and the zotac computers. I dabbled with the thought of building a ubuntu computer since they have come a long way and melded some things I like about Mac OS as well as Windows in to 1 package. The problem there is that as much as I like it there is still always work to be done on a linux machine. I am at the point where when I need to do something on my computer I want to sit down and do it. I'm sure I could get it up and running to my liking but I seriously don't even want to put the effort in anymore. I want an out of the box experience that is updated for me.

Now the frustration is with the current mini (although a great machine) it is currently outdated. I guess for most it's mostly about the graphics. I'm not sure what direction they will go in. Smaller unique build or just updating the processors? The brix machines with the iris pro graphics seem to have heat issues in the i7 versions although the i5 sounds like it might not suffer as much from that.

As much as I'd like the updated graphics I don't think I'm going to wait much longer, no sense in driving myself crazy, if the new is that awesome I can always sell the current one to pay for it. I'll probably wait out March though.
