Heh. but how long will it take her to discover MacKeeper?

Out of interest... my daughter got a shiny Zenbook for uni a couple of weeks ago. Came with a one year McAfee sub, which I probably foolishly uninstalled and left it all to Defender.

She's a sensible girl (an aspiring accountant!?!) and is 'aware' of security issues, but is there a must-have, non-intrusive, free third party malware / virus / etc prophylactic she should install?

I think that's a great call. Defender and a little common sense is all that's needed. You can always use virustotal if your unsure of a particular file.

I realise no-one can answer this because my guess is as good as everyone else but would forum members expect HDMI to be one of the ports on the next iteration of the Mac Mini?

Given the alleged chassis of the next Retina Macbook Pro which has only four USB-C ports and a headphone socket I'm wondering if Apple would do similar on the Mac Mini and give it four USB-C port removing HDMI, SD Card, Ethernet and all else.

I suppose Apple would be making it the Mac Mini much smaller if it did this.

What do people think?

Apple is courageous so HDMI is toast IMO. The 2016 Mini will contain one single USB-C port for external display, power cord, wired keyboard, wired mouse, wired networking. However I am in two minds as to whether they might give us a lightning port to allow us to plug our Apple approved headphones into.

In other words, it'll be even worse than the retina Macbook!

I wonder if the new Mac mini (which is almost certainly coming) will have a built-in microphone? macOS Sierra includes Siri, but with a currently-existing mini and third-party monitor you couldn't use this basic feature of the new OS without adding an external microphone.
A very good question - it should.
But another solution would be to sell an adaptor for this beast.

Apple have moved their quarterly earnings from 10/27 to 10/25 due to a "scheduling conflict". Would they really push the earnings call back for the release of the new Mini?

I'll be a little surprised if they have an earnings call before they announce any new Macs - I'm sure it's something investors would want to discuss with them. Naturally then, my next question would be why push it back in the first place in the event new Macs are released on the Monday? What's wrong with an extra couple of days?

I'm surprised there hasn't yet been any tangible leaks about any kind of upcoming product announcement event for this month. Either Apple are getting good at remaining tight lipped or we are just creating a large amount of expectation out of nowhere and no Macs are actually being updated before the end of the year. A lot of people will be disappointed if that's the case :).

Macs are announced before the earnings call. Macs are released on the Friday after, but need the Thursday before to prep for it.

Perhaps the reason there have been no leaks, is because they haven't been working on anything.

Then again, it's probably something they don't want to discuss with the investors.

Apple to investors: "so... our 3 year old machines have still been selling at the highest prices in the industry. We see no reason to waste money designing new products, because our logo is enough to keep customers buying. We have no plans to begin working on anything until we are unable to sell any of our older machines."

Investors to Apple: "so, we'll be receiving higher than usual payouts since no money has been reinvested into R&D???"

Apple: "no... Tim got a larger bonus. So all money has been spent."

No Tim Cook just has an appointment with his barber. The guy always looks immaculate like he gets a haircut every day.
