Apple sends out invites for October event! Err, not yet, but that's the headline I'm waiting for...

So I was waiting for a Mac Mini. Now I'm moving away from Mac lol... used to be really set on using Mac but now I really just don't care anymore.

Same here. I'm using my old windows PC more and more these days. Why not? It's as fast as a brand new mac. Sure MacOS is superior to windows but at some point these ridiculous delays and higher costs (for vintage hardware) negate any benefit.

I'm ready to buy a new media server, desktop and a laptop. Hard to believe that Apple currently offers nothing that meets my needs. I plan to check out windows machines at costco this weekend.

I've been thinking the same thing. I've been using Windows 10 and Debian 8.6 Linux much more lately.

Apple must not want me as a customer.

This is the problem Apple has. Sierra is bloatware compared to Windows 10 and Win10 can run on decades old hardware with ease. It's like Microsoft care about e-waste more than Apple, the latter who causes us to toss away our Apple devices regularly. Perhaps that's okay if you're a multi-billionaire, but us poor folk use older hardware. Come on, Apple, make your OS sing on ancient hardware like it used to.

But of course! Apple's entire business model is built around consumers tossing away their Apple devices regularly. They depend on it.

This will only change if they emancipate OS X from their hardware. But given the way Apple has been moving, that seems highly unlikely.

My AMD RX 480 GPU arrived today for my hack. I'll put it in over the weekend and it's supported by the latest Sierra Beta that I have already installed.

Final piece for project complete. Triple boot macOS, Linux 16.04 and Windows 10 and it works with all 3. :)

Funny how people here complain about no new hardware from Apple yet blame them on forcing you to change hardware regularly :)

Actually it makes sense.

What we want is support for what we've already purchased from them. Instead of simply abandoning OS support for a machine that can run the OS just because it's X number of revisions old.

Likewise, we also want current technology when we spend $2000+ on a new computer. When the day comes for each of us that we need a new computer (for whatever reason), we don't want to pay Apple's premium price for a machine that is essentially end of life, technology wise.

If every other company is selling Skylake or Kaby Lake at say sub $1000 (or at least under $1500), then why would we feel that we're getting our money's worth if we're paying more than that to get a broadwell, or haswell computer from Apple?

Apple has always stretched it too far by previously only updating annually, and charging the same price for a machine a year after it is no longer current. But these last several years have gone from being a stretch, to being a flat out joke of a ripoff.

Yep. It's become an embarrassing, insulting, and completely indefensible joke.

Apple haven't always stretched it too far. When I got my late 2012 13" Macbook Pro it was simply WOW. Retina, USB3, 1TB flash, 5 hour battery (the way I use it), fast and silent. It was years ahead of other laptops around at the time.

I hope that one day they release something so cutting edge again.

Apparently that era ended in late 2012.

To my mind, it's kinda bizarre. Apple does depend on customers regularly upgrading their hardware. But yes, Apple has skimped on producing new Mac hardware for years now; the core iMac and laptops have only been getting evolutionary updates, while devices that Apple considers "niche" are getting no updates at all.

It is a bitter truth that in terms of profits nowadays, the Mac provides something of a rounding error compared to the iPhone. So yeah, the Mac just isn't that important to Apple today. But given Apple's business model, they do seem to be treating the product as if they plan to drop it altogether.

I think it would be extremely bizarre for Apple – who mostly rely on one product – to make their offerings even less diverse. Just rename yourselves iPhone Co. At least Samsung have dishwashers, TVs and whatever else it is they make to fall on. What would happen if iPhones started exploding instead?

So far they still need the Mac for Xcode but that could change if the can adapt it to the iPad Pro.

None of this should be surprising. When the CEO touts how an iPad is a replacement computer for a lot of people it should tell you how the highest levels at the company are thinking about the future - and it doesn't appear to be desktop computers.

I'm in disagreement with the overriding sentiment here…

I think a series of events/timings have conspired to make updates to many of the Mac lines not possible or worthwhile carrying out.

I surmise Apple have chosen to go longer between updates than they'd ideally like. I think we're likely approaching the plateau of that 'dry' period and will see a plethora of updates very soon.

I agree, but what if we're wrong? That would be a disaster, I can't see myself going back to PC or using an iPad instead.

I don't think that it's lack of designers that is the problem. I think it's lack of interest from Apple's management. "Super. Computer. What is this Mucintosh you speak of?"
iPad Pro is Tim's idea of a super computer. Apples X86 future seems to be withering on the vine from Mac Pro to the Mini.
