I wonder if Tim Cook and co ever come to this site to try and gauge with what people actually want from them.

Some such folks do post here……. along with a bunch of disaffected dilettantes. Together they almost certainly represent a small fraction of Apple's Mac market.Sadly - "we" do not even register ... the tinkerers, creative thinkers, masters, dreamers, inter-weavers and such represent a small fraction in the Apple Money Pool .
Ultimately, the device will permit ubiquitous computing caring not whether MAC or PC .. think IOT ... and the portal / net / cloud will be intelligent enough to offload common strikes and serve up information to all anywhere.
This is true... for devices like tablets and iPhones. For tasks like getting a few sentences worth of information down from the net, you're right, there's no need for multiple I/O ports, or fancy GPUs, or standardized form-factors. There's no need for a PC at all.
But that's not what people do with PCs.
Sure, there are folks whose only interaction with a computing device is to spend 30 seconds checking the weather or finding out when a tv show will be broadcast. But, for many people, they need to get work done using a PC. They'll sit down, concentrate deeply on the task at hand, and spend a great deal of time typing, pointing, and otherwise interacting with the machine in order to create their own content. Office documents, database updates, new media products, code compilation -- all these are enhanced by having full-sized keyboard/mouse/etc. devices, large screens, and ancillary products (such as printers, scanners, external drives, etc.) available for use.
For people who can manage all their interaction with a computer with one hand while sitting on a couch, Apple is producing the perfect products. For folks who need deeper interaction with their computing devices, today's Apple is starting to make life hard...
? is can I use my new MM at 1024 X 768 ?

The average Joe or Jill, who just wants to do stuff on an easy to use computer that lasts for several years with minimal hassle, is almost certain to be a repeat customer from time to time, unlike the aforementioned fickle few.
Preach ... yes, preach on.. I have the first iPad which is my last because it just works good as a "slave" to my Mini but other than browsing the web while watching a movie it's never used. As you can see I have a large footprint and when it's time to work - work gets done!View attachment 675564
Stop with this already. We're not all going to be happy about paying a premium for an inferior product.
The minimal hassle reference isn't even true anymore.
The average Joe or Jill, for their purposes, would be better off with Chromebooks. I like Apple, but I'm waiting for a product that actually makes sense.
And it's not a fickle few - my entire company (10,000s of clients and hundreds of staff) is transitioning away from Apple. The transition is at work, but that leads to changes at home and what their children are using. Apple products just don't make sense anymore for many situations.
If you're capped at 16 GB, you're not pro. If you're popping a spinner in there, you are purposely destroying the user experience (try it with even a SATA SSD - it's not comparable). Presented with any choice, why would a user not at least grumble when they're forking over premium dollars to upgrade what should be already included.
Don't characterize those unhappy with Apple's product releases as disaffected dilettantes or the fickle few and we won't characterize you as a lemming, a luddite, or as entirely devoid of common sense.
Hi,
i work in an Apple Reseller and like many of you i'm waiting for the mini 2013 refresh.
From monday the two major Apple suppliers in Italy are suddenly and completely out of stock of minis. I know that this happen from time to time, but the timing is no coincidence.
Trust me, a new mini is coming next week, or at least we have solid evidence to believe it.
I feel... nostalgic.Ahhh, Remember this......The good old days when there was still hope.
I feel... nostalgic.
And resigned to stretching my 2012 quad Mini as far as it will go.
I think you underestimate Apple. They already know how to cripple it, now they are just waiting so the outdated tech is REALLY outdated when they release it.
Sadly - "we" do not even register ... the tinkerers, creative thinkers, masters, dreamers, inter-weavers and such represent a small fraction in the Apple Money Pool ... they now have legions of sheeple and blind followers who will forever be part of Apple's cloud (crowd). So I doubt you have to worry about Tim or Johnny caring one bit about what we want.
Sorry .. truly sorry really!
Apple is the only technology company that treats its products like a fine wine... they want then to be aged for years before release. I'm hoping for a vintage Pentium III in the next Mac Mini, with maybe a hint of 64MB of RAM. Delicious!
I full heartedly agree with the first half of your comment but want to adjust the second. It's not that they're sheeple or blind followers, Apple has been making products that fit the need of the majority of customers but no longer exceed expectations like they used to. Majority of people including myself, buy their products because it does what I need but I no longer (as many people I know) evangelize my love of Apple like back in the days. I just hope they wake up and get back into "exceeding expectations" before they end up like Michael Kors...
Quite the contrary ..."the tinkerers, creative thinkers, masters, dreamers, inter-weavers and such got Apple where they are today ... we stepped away from the fold in the 80's to make Apple what it is today ... a leader then but slipping now ... as for your clients and company .. they will continue to hang in there ... well, because their kids aint gonna go for it nor is grandma ... for them it still "just works".
We're all hot and bothered but I seriously believe this stall is precipitated by Apple for financial gain - they have the latitude (money) to "F-ck Up(grades) and build a f-cking Space Ship for crying out loud. Once the mothership is complete they will take us where no one has gone before ... because well, they know what's best.
Wireless beaming, glass shells, AR and no more calls for "more power Scottie"! ... and watch that TouchBar concept make it to the iPhone where the device completely morphs functionality according to which App you're in ... can't you see it ... a clear piece of Sapphire Glass that becomes whatever ... hell - you could even emulate an iPhone 5 on an iPhone 8 and still kick it with the latest technology!
Beam me up!
This is actually a great article on that topic (if you haven't read it yet): http://venturebeat.com/2016/10/25/why-tim-cook-is-steve-ballmer/I was never a Jobs fanboi, but the critical leadership hole at Apple left by his departure is becoming increasingly obvious.
No disrespect to Cook, who clearly has some outstanding skills as an organiser and manager, nor to Ives, who is a great designer, both critical roles in a team. But they are also clearly not the leaders that a company like Apple needs at the helm to point them in the direction they need to go.
In fairness, the likes of Jobs don't come along very often, and he may well have been a classic product of his times, never to be repeated.
