Well I don't really go along with that. In a way, I feel kind of the opposite… why do we need a new version of MacOS every year? Do they even have time to fix the bugs in each version? I just want a stable and fast operating system where all my expensive software doesn't become obsolete every couple years.

Hmm. I'm in the process of transitioning all my work back to Linux, and I've gotta say, there's something to be said for an OS that receives consistent attention and upgrades. I have no trouble throwing all sorts of ancient and modern hardware at the OS; drivers are constantly being added and improved. All the legacy open-source applications I used are still there (and still supported), while all sorts of commercial apps are now finding their way onto the platform. Heck, it's even starting to turn into a high-end gaming OS.

So here's my problem -- I like OS X. I like the beautiful, usable UI. But man, it just doesn't run on the hardware I want to use. And it isn't sufficiently better than Linux anymore to make me pay the price of the inflexible, unwieldy, over-expensive hardware I have to purchase in order to use it. :(

Becoming a hackintosher over the past 6 months has enlightened me to how poorly Apple supports anything but their custom designed hardware and how poorly they take care of supporting older Apple hardware with the code omissions.

I think we can acknowledge the downward decline of Mac importance to the new Tim's and Ive's Apple appliances. It just doesn't bring in the big bucks like I devices.

It's sad to see this happen to a beautiful OS.

What was once a beautiful operating system.
Today I had to hold down the Option key while selecting the Wifi menu in order to "Open Wireless Diagnostics" so I could find the best location for my new Netgear router (2007 Airport died).
Talk about over-modalizing things!
I tracked down the App in System/core services, and put an alias in my utilities folder, but the past five years, Apple has pulled stunts like this over and over and over. An operating System where you have to search the internet to find what were once readily apparent features is not a beautiful operating system.

Ran into the same thing awhile ago setting up a new monitor under El Capitan. They eliminated all the advanced options in monitor calibration under System Preferences and all you could change was gamma and white point. I had to use Google to find out that you need to hold option to get the advanced dialogs.

iOS is at least as bad though. I figure it's only a phone, so I try to keep it up to date. But the latest version added some stupid feature of bringing up "voice control" if you hold the home button a little too long. Happens all the time now, and there is no way to disable this.

I was speaking to aesthetics moe than overall function. It has it's faults and that is for sure.

Did you try asking Siri to open it?

Yeah especially considering how the iOS and OS X teams are actually just 1 team and they spend more time in iOS land, OS X is seriously neglected.

So a new mac mini is coming? I guess at spring event we will get new imac and 12" Macbook updates and at WWDC or autumn the mac mini and mac pro

Yes a new mac mini is probably coming. But do not hold your hopes up high that it will be this spring. I sure hope it, but I had the same hope for last autumn, and I got nothing from that either. So take this as a bit of health advice, do not hope for it, and be surprised if they release it, instead of the other way around, and only becoming more frustrated.

To be fair - Apple is pretty consistent there. Holding the option key to get advanced features in a menu has been used for many years now.

But the latest version [of iOS] added some stupid feature of bringing up "voice control" if you hold the home button a little too long. Happens all the time now, and there is no way to disable this.
Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Home button

Options are: "Siri", "Voice Control", "Off".

Since you want to continue this… I do not see those option in iOS 10.1.1, have not updated to 10.2 yet so maybe they changed it?. I Press Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button and there are 3 choices for Click Speed and a switch to Rest Finger to Open - that's all. This article is one of several that point out the issue: https://www.imobie.com/support/how-to-turn-off-voice-control-in-ios-10.htm

"In iOS 10, you are actually unable to disable or turn off Voice Control, the only way is to prevent it from activating is enabling Siri to override Voice Control. The bad news is that you cannot disable Voice Control and Siri at the same time in iOS 10."

In a Google search, typing "ios 10 turn" brings up "ios 10 turn off voice control" as the #2 choice in autofill, so I don''t think I'm alone in finding this annoying. And to bring this back on point, I only mentioned it in the context that Apple has changed a feature users have grown used to over the years and the solution (if it even exists) is not especially obvious.

So we are looking at October 2017 now, at the earliest?

What a farce. It's time to move on people. The mini is dead.

Erm no, I do not know where you got that from, you missed two big dates. The earliest logical date is Spring 2017, and it might even come earlier. After Spring, there is a good chance that it will come out at the WWDC, after that you are looking at October 2017. It can also come at any time any day (with some exceptions), with or without a keynote, and as I have heard from others, most likely on a Tuesday.
