How much profit do you think Apple are making from the sale of each Mini these days?? , must be pretty high considering the age of the hardware and selling them for the same price that they were introduced at.

Apple's usual margin is around 30-40% iirc. As the outdated components should be available quite a bit cheaper today than when the 2014 mini was released, nowadays it's probably even more for this product line.

I officially gave up on the Mac Mini waiting and bought a Kaby Lake Intel Nuc (i3) with a new high quality Dell display. The total after additional stuff like RAM is less than what the mid range Haswell Mac Mini costs right now... You know, by itself. I would've really liked to have continued using Apple desktops but the lack of updates together with high price and the use of old bottleneck tech (5400rpm HDDs unless you pay premium for Apple SSD/Fusion drive) made this decision a no-brainer. Sure, I'm going to miss the simplicity and stability of OS X (do not want to experiment with Hackintosh) compared to Windows, but it is clear to me that Apple is no longer giving its all in the desktop field.

Good choice. I thinki I may pick one up during the holiday season later this year for a media hub and Plex server.
I could build one cheaper and about the size of a Mini but I like how small those NUCs are.

I'm out. I'm getting a REALLY good deal on a used 2013 iMac as a stop gap computer for my son, to replace the 2008 iMac he is currently using to play minecraft/roblox/youtube.

I'm getting rid of both 2008 iMacs. Mine was just a hold over from prior age, as I've switched over to using the 2012 cMBP for everything now. I'm also specing out a PC tower with 8-core CPU and nVidia 10** GPU. It's amazing what you can get on the other side, for a fraction of the cost.

The misses is the only one I'm not sure yet what to do about. Her needs are minimum, but is using a 15" MBP and has asked for something lighter. 2015 MBAir? The Macbooks were under-powered since day one, so I'm hesitant to even get one.

Just disgusted/disappointed at this point.
If you follow the tonymac buyers guide you can get a pretty easy to implement hackintosh going with your machine. If you go X99 you can still do it but get a Board that someone had a successful result from. As much as I like my MSI X99A board it doesn't seem to work well for a hackintosh.

Moneywise Apple is stupid. That maxed 2012 mini's bring exactly zero dollar into Apple's balance today. What they do is to show the demand for such a machine - and Apple is simply ignoring that. Oh well, I'm sure Apple will eventually establish the iPad as Mac mini replacement. Can only be 10 years away or so ...
Quite the opposite. People buy new mini from apple, because 5 year old used mini costs the same.

My used 2012 quad was $150 cheaper than the same configuration of the top spec 2014 mini and it is 50% faster. I got it from OWC and it included a 3 month warranty and 15 day return/exchange period. For me, it was a no-brainer. ;)

I just wish OWC would open a shop in EU...

Price difference is understandable since both are so old.
What will happen to prices IF there's new model this year?
I'd guess that 2014 is suddenly cheaper than 2012...

From DaringFireball todays big scoop:
Near the end, John Paczkowski had the presence of mind to ask about the Mac Mini, which hadn’t been mentioned at all until that point. Schiller: “On that I’ll say the Mac Mini is an important product in our lineup and we weren’t bringing it up because it’s more of a mix of consumer with some pro use. … The Mac Mini remains a product in our lineup, but nothing more to say about it today."

At least that does bring some hope to people here. Maybe their modular Mac Pro is actually also seen as a Mac mini replacement (I doubt it, but you never know).

Reading the quotes on Mac Rumors about the promise of a new Mac Pro, but not this year, I definitely get the sense that Apple felt the heat. That talented team working on the new Mac Pro may have been assembled very recently. The team working on the new Mac Mini may not yet exist. BUT, Apple has felt the heat, you know that when they announce something that doesn't yet exist a year in advance. Good work, all you people who consistently and persistently applied the pressure. Keep it on!

Here's the exact quote from DF:

Important product? Ok. How about an update after 3 years ;-)

Fingers crossed...

PS: Ooops. Just noticed somebody already posted this but since it's so important I will leave the quote from Schiller up. Better twice than never, Apple.

It would be nice to see a Kaby Lake update but being realistic if there is an update the processor in a Mini seems to always run a generation behind the MacBooks.
