[[ Does anyone think we'll ever see a dedicated GPU in the mac mini ?? ]]

Almost certainly, the answer to that is no.
Particularly if Apple decides to "shrink the case size" even more.

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying my 2012 Mac Mini i5, this thing is so fast, it's exceeding my expectations. I was kinda concerned coming from windows to a mac for the first time but it's been pretty easy, still learning more each day.

When the mini arrived, I soon learned I needed a few more USB spots so I went to Best Buy and bought a 4 port 3.0 powered USB hub then I realized I jumped the gun...I had also ordered an Apple USB keyboard which came a day after I bought the USB hub, I didn't realize there were 2 more USB connectors on the side of the apple keyboard so I used 1 for my logitech usb wireless mouse and the other I can connect my iPhone 5 and it even syncs with itunes and charges through the apple keyboard (that was great news) as it free'd up 2 more spots and I didn't need the USB Hub I bought. I also bought the superdrive since I use alot of CD's still and sometimes burn DVD's. The refurb Time Capsule works perfectly and my wifi seems a bit faster, noticed a huge difference when turning on wifi on my iphone now it connects instantly where as my previous router took 5-8 seconds longer and my laptop connection is stronger as well in the house. The time machine backups are easy. I figured I don't need it to back up every hour so I turned it off and will turn it back on once a week for backups.

Since I didn't need it for gaming or extensive graphic work, I think I was working myself up for nothing waiting for the refresh, the i5 really meets all my needs for now and can see this lasting several years if not more. It's really fast with the 16 ram and the SSD programs open in an instant. Why did I wait so long?

Time Machine Editor is a very useful free app that lets you modify the schedule of your Time Machine backups.
Like you I have no need for hourly backups, instead I choose to backup once a day using Time Machine Editor settings.
Better then trying to remember to turn it on manually.

Apple is killing me

Why does the mini get no love from Apple. I desperately need a new mac but I don't want a monitor. I need and already have one nice monitor with multiple inputs to connect a mac, gaming PC and my work windows laptop. I just want a Mac mini with the specs of the base iMac, or I could even tolerate a lower clock speed as long as it's quad core. Is that so much to ask for? And I am not buying the current mini with ancient specs. I just refuse. I've tried to figure out how to squeeze an iMac on my desk next to my monitor but it just won't fit and creates ergonomic issues. I'm a longstanding apple customer, I actually owned the very first Mac. They are killing me with this wait. Sorry end of rant.

Well done….. common sense is not something we see much of on this antsy thread. My guess is that the current model, with tweaks appropriate to needs, would more than meet the real requirements of most ranters here, for several years.

I don't really mind if Apple updates the specs, or lowers the price to reflect what should at the point be cheaper 2 year old tech. Doing neither makes me keep waiting. I think they are teasing me to buy a waste paper basket , err Mac Pro.

IMO Broadwell will be the key to driving 4k and Apple would be wise to wait until the release next year and put them in the Mini which would future proof it for another 3 year refresh. Iris Pro will run 4k but it's really pushing it. The thermals would be really bad.

Anyone happen to know how iris pro thermals compare to dGPU thermals in a small box under 4k/60 load?

Just saw your sig. Many macs. Which one is your favourite?

That's like asking which of my children is my favorite. :)

My 15" MBP gives me mobility, which I need for classes (I teach) and travel. But I prefer to work at a desk.

My 27" iMac is my desktop workhorse. It has a 2nd (20", 1600x1200 pixel) monitor attached so there is lots of desk space.

I'm using a Mac mini now (4 years old upgraded with an SSD and 8GB RAM) at work preferring it to my company-provided PC.

My Mini server is used as a server and two other minis are entertainment centers, so I don't do any work directly on them. Two other Macs (a 24" iMac and a MBA) are my wife's.

My current MBP is 7 years old. I plan to buy a Mac Mini this year, and hope for it to last for a similar time. I think it's not unreasonable to want Apple to provide current CPUs, so that whatever I buy now can last longer in future.

Obviously! Which other brand sells 2 year old hardware for the same price as when it was first introduced!?

Can we close this topic?

The only way to do that is take all of the forums offline for several hours with a "we'll be right back" sign, then require everyone to look at all of the forums to figure out which thread was closed.

In the meantime on another board there will be thousands of posts speculating on what was changed, followed by thousands more saying "no change to thread x".

Finally both this board and all others will be bombarded by posts analyzing why this thread was closed and not thread y, and starting speculation on when thread y WAS going to be closed. Followed by even more telling you if you really need to read thread y to do it now, if not then wait until you need to before reading.

Don't forget http://motoringcrunch.com doing the same article, with slightly different title, for the next 6 months about how nobody knows when the thread that was closed is going to come back.

HAHAHA I LOVE LOVE LOVE this....

some one (possibly a psychology or anthropology major) should conduct a study on the reasons why and how a single word ("Tuesday") can have such effects on -sub-cultural group dynamics....

I already bought a mini so it can be closed but what fun would that be? The truth is the thread title is pretty timeless, even when a new does eventually release the next one will be coming.

As for my i5 with 16GB of RAM and the SSD, it's been a pleasure and it's been less than a week. So glad I just went ahead and got one. I'm really loving how silent it is too. Pretty much everything I wanted.

Yeah, ditto that. Sure beats those old noisy windoze machines. I'm still looking forward to a 4k machine but there is plenty of time until the programing and content is ready and prices for new TVs come down.
I'm ready to update my old iPad and IPhone now.
