That's what I was thinking/afraid of. Did not help that my computer completely failed last night (I can't even load OSX and when I go into Recovery mode, the "Macintosh HD" drive won't even mount). So I'm glad I was able to confirm I was able to recovery almost all my important files.

So now I need to decide if I should just be without a computer for about three months (I do still have an iPad and iPhone) or if I should get a Mac Mini now and risk missing the update. Honestly, I don't think I'll miss out on TOO much but I need at least 1 TB of harddrive space and I might save $200 if I wait for the next generation.

I recommend the I5 refurb from Apple and 1TB external HD. Usually you can find those 1 TB externals on sale for under $100 and sometimes a lot less. I been waiting since last October for a new Mini and found a open box at BB at a good price after Christmas.
You may be waiting for a long time but no one knows. ;)

If this low cost iMac rumour is true then that's not good news for the future of the Mini and certainly no refresh in 2014, sadly.

The thing is if I understand correctly that most of the cost of the iMac is in the screen so exactly how could Apple make it lower cost while also making it an "upgrade"?

If there are no hardware updates/releases until WWDC

Apple will have gone 6 months with only the new Mac Pro being released.

Apple will have gone 6 months with only the new Mac Pro being released.

Barring some quite minor speedbump and price adjust tweaks on laptops, how is this any different than the last 2-3 years?

Between Intel herding their CPU rollouts to the tail end of calender Q2 and Apple pushing approximately half the Mac line up to after the "annual" OS X mid summer update, they have turned January-May into a new product desert.

agreed. There is nothing new coming out till atleast WWDC.

If something isn't mentioned at WWDC then I fear it may be dead.
I'd be astonished if they retired it, even if nothing's heard at WWDC. Tim Cook only recently spoke about Apple's drive to attract even more switchers from Windows to Mac OS X. The Mini is surely central to that agenda & likely to remain so for years to come.

Still disappointing that we've had no update now for 546 days (average is 381). Suggests a complete redesign. However, if it's at the expense of even limited user-upgradability (RAM, HD), I'll probably buy a refurb Mini to either replace my 2011 model (6630 video), or as an addition, then keep my current one in reserve.

I think the first problem is what Tim said and there has been no mention of a new Mini.

The second problem is what he didn't say. Like we are retiring the Mini in favor of a new entry level IMac.

I guess only time will tell.

I just don't understand the need for all the smoke and mirrors. Sure, surprises, prevention of corporate espionage or copycat products, etc.

But to simply make a statement such as, "We are working on the next Mac Mini. Be patient." doesn't really hurt, does it?:confused:

Somebody needs to make a countdown timer that counts the number of minutes until the next Tuesday just for readers of this thread. It resets to 10,080 at midnight each Tuesday morning!

Yes it does. They will see a decrease in sales from the day they say a new one is coming.

This is not specific to Apple.

Okay, I'll take your word for it. I'm a nuclear engineer, so gray areas and interpretive subjects such as philosophy, psychology, and marketing don't resonate well with me I'm afraid.

It's not rocket science.

You: I'm gonna buy a new Mac Mini!
Apple: Awesome! But wait! We have a new one coming out in just a month, hold on until then!
You and everybody else: Oh okay.

Sales go down during that one-month period, as every potential buyer is just waiting by for the new product to come out.

The markets don't like things that stand still, so rumors/analysis/forecasts start going around how Apple can't possibly launch a new Mac Mini that's made of pure platinum, has 12 quantum processors AND cost less than $599.

If for whatever reason Apple can't start selling that promised Mini the month after, not only did they hurt their own sales and pushed their stocks down, but customers are starting to buy stuff from other companies.

Then the glorious launch day comes around. It's just a Mac Mini with a current processor, more or less the same features, and the starting price is about the same. But interest was waned, nobody cares except those who go supernova claiming their were promised a new golden age and all they got is a lousy low-end computer.

Back to square one.

(ok so I'm mostly exaggerating)

You know what Apple should do is give the new Mini away at WWDC to the ticket holders as a gift and promotion for the price they are charging for those tickets. :):apple::)

Right. I didn't consider the sales of the current model. I would, however, like to put in an order for one of those quantum processor models? Should probably outperform Haswell, no?

It's called The Osborne Effect for those old enough to remember the Osborne computer. :)

They are the poster child for this, but not the only example.

It becomes especially troublesome if you preannounce and miss your date.

Depends on the workload and the number of qubits involved.

Crypto-breaking? yes. OLTP databases? No.
