If this low cost iMac rumour is true then that's not good news for the future of the Mini and certainly no refresh in 2014, sadly.

So would it be better to install an SSD in my 2010 Mac Mini with the 320M GPU , or just get the newest model I can with an SSD ?

I am really stressing out about this  , I NEED a MM !!

I have it hook up to my tv and as far as computers go , it`s my main squeeze.

I have my MacBook Pro for back-up and on-the-go utility stuff.

My Galaxy Note 2014 is what it is , a tablet on steroids  , I would have bought an iPad , but with all the minutia going on with Samsung and it`s dislike of Apple and IOS , I bought an Android to make my F8000 happy !!

So give it to me straight , what should I do !!

Thanks ,

I upgraded my 2009 Mini last year with 8GB ram and 750gb hdd as I was afraid there would be a 2013 refresh as indeed there wasn't. If I were you I'd put an SSD into your existing machine, very cost effective upgrade and then wait and see what happens. If/when a new Mini comes you can get one and you'll be able to resell the 2010 easily especially with an SSD in it. I use my Mini in the same way as do you and even a 2009 spec is good enough. I will get a new Mini when one comes out assuming spec is decent and I can add an SSD or it is an option from Apple.

On the other hand my late 2009 mini 2.66 CTD had 8GB RAM and a WD Scorpio Black 750GB drive. I decided to replace it with a 2012 2.3 i7.

After selling the 2009 I found a 2012 2.3 at B&H for a good price. 16GB RAM and an M500 SSD were added. Even before I installed the SSD the 2012 was stupidly fast compared to the older one.

I'm $880 in the new one without the SSD. It was well worth the money.

Thanks guy`s for your input :)

I was actually thinking the same , putting an SSD in my 2010 MM might not be such a bad idea.

So far the disc drive is holding up , so maybe.

No problems with the spinner either , so if there is no update this year , then it might be a good project.

Right now it`s doing fine with 4 gig`s , but if I do the SSD , I would probably bring it up to 8 GB`s.

Thanks again for your advice !!

Later :D

NUCish Update?

Does anyone else expect the current design to go away entirely?

I've got a feeling that the 2014 refresh will be a new form factor closely resembling what Intel (NUC) & Gigabyte (BRIX) are doing.

Maybe a cube resembling a bigger, aluminum Apple TV or AirPort Express with the guts of a 13" MBPr?

Mobile-class CPU, RAM & PCIe/mSATA SSD to save space and thermal output. Could even be fanless using the aluminum shell as a heatsink.

Any thoughts?

if it keeps the option for a quad core i7 i doubt it will be fanless. any quad core at all will likely not be fanless. if it was fanless i would expect a 1.3 or 1.7 ghz haswell in there.

I think what puts the mini ahead of the the NUCs is its power compared to other NUCs. Apple would lose the advantage by putting a ulv processor in there. Right now the mini is pretty powerful even if its slightly bigger then nuc. The added size isnt going to break the deal. If they can shrink it down by using pci express im all for it. I just dont want them to fall back on macbook air processors just to be fanless.

If they throw in a decent GPU option I'd storm the castle for one of them.

Tuesday came and it has been a disappointing week. Sadly, there have been only 30 new posts. At that rate 2,000 may never come. On a brighter note, Tuesday is still coming.
/QUOTE]

The only tuesday that matters is tuesday PDT here in the United States.

But don't expect anything to come from apple before the developers conferences at the beginning of June.

Being as it is US, the customer, that makes Apple what it is today, I really think that Apple should be paying a WHOLE LOT MORE ATTENTION to us here on this thread.

It really does seem that we will not hear a damn thing until AT LEAST the DEV Conference in June.

So, the fact it is or will soon be Tuesday means nada.

Do not abuse your customers, Apple. We want an update, and furthermore, we want updates on reasonable schedules.

The time we are spending here could be productive. So, Apple is bringing down the productivity of the world.

Too bad the NUC does not have the power of the Apple. If the NUC was a bit bigger and had PCIe SSD options, and was silent, and cool and sharp looking, and had a nice i7 and 32GB of RAM and maybe even a slightly faster video solution, I would seriously consider moving back to Windows. 8.1, which when setup properly is not that bad. Has a nice modern UI.

And Office is now on my iPad so that would work.

Although I like OSX, I do not hate Windows. I do hate malware though, that is for sure. But I myself never seemed to have an issue with that.

Anyways, be careful Apple, because if we, your customers, go "on strike" you are in serious trouble.

may be within his use of a few pc's and a few macs the macs are better.

Just as in my area wifi has endless dropouts due to military flyovers.

In my case all wifi is pretty bad,but if I drive about 10 miles north of my home

wifi is fine.

So if he had 2 pc's that were bad at wifi and 2 macs good he may think it is the os. it could be the gear is bad

As an EE working with RF I'm curious why wifi drops, out when planes fly overhead. The only thing I can think of is that they are emitting large enough amount of RF in the same frequency band of wifi (2.4 GHz or 5GHz) to overwhelm the front end circuits of the receiver. If that's the case, then those transmitter must be putting out enormous power as RF power falls off at the rate of 1/distance^2 which is pretty steep if you plot it.

Tuesday's dead again…...

……. but many an old Mini will soldier on through another update or two.

It doesn't need to necessarily overwhelm the front end, it just needs to cause enough noise to obscure the signal. Plus I imagine active radar (which is what I assume would be doing this) would be pretty strong and potentially directional.

I have a baby monitor that would actually cause an older router of mine to fail until it was rebooted even though neither the transmitter or receiver got anywhere near the router. My newer router soldiers on through it, but if you get the baby monitor receiver too close to your laptop/ipad, then the wifi link breaks. The silly thing uses 2.4Ghz, but isn't 802.11 compliant...

You're router shouldn't crash from a baby monitor. One is RF and the other is twisted pair. Twisted pair is actually a much better medium to communicate over than RF which is why I'd take wired Ethernet over WLAN any day.

Regarding the baby monitor near the laptop, I'm not surprised as I believe they both share the 2.4 GHz ISM band so they are likely transmitting on top of each other. Depending on the system architecture one or both could have been designed to coexist but doubt it due to cost.
