+1...there was a post in one of the desktop/notebook forums here the other day saying something to the effect of:
"Apple needs to get back to their core computer business"
As demonstrated above, Apple's computer business is far from core and hasn't been for 7+ years now.
As of last quarter computers make up 12% of Apple's revenue vs 73% for iOS. That's the gravy train and thats what their focus is on plain and simple. There was an estimate of the Mini's volume by Digitimes from ~1.5 years ago of 1.4 million units. We also know that Apple sells roughly 16 million Mac units per year so the mini is 8.75% of a 12% slice, or
1.05% of total revenue. Considering that, its obvious why the Mini has been neglected for so long.
--------------------------------
I'm not optimistic of the Mini's future but a possible scenario came into my mind the other day. When there was originally talk of moving production to the US about 2 years ago the Mini was talked about. If I remember correct Tim Cook did an interview with Brian Williams and I think it was mentioned that the Mini was the line which was going to be moved (I'm on a slow connection otherwise I'd try to find the video to verify). We all know that turned out to be the Pro but think of this:
- Apple built a $100 million dollar facility, where the Pro is made. The Pro, as we know, has had supply issues for 6 months now. It makes no sense for Apple to build this new factory which is instantly maxed out in capacity by one of their lowest volume lines.
- There must be additional capacity not being used while they figure out the most efficient way to operate this facility, or maybe there is capacity that is getting lined up for something else.
- It took a while for the supply chain in the US to be prepared for the new production, as evidenced by how long before their commitment to the Pro was voiced before it actually started shipping.
- If they do want to move some production here it makes sense to move their lower volume products, the Pro and Mini
- The Pro and Mini, being headless, are the simplest to move because the entire display supply chain is in Asia. Processors, logic boards, cases, PSUs, etc can easily be done here.
- There were no leaks of the new Pro at all prior to Apple's first mention, which we can probably attribute to the new production being in the US. In China we hear leaks of everything down to Apple TVs and AirPorts.
- This would line up with the Mini having no leaks or being on any analyst roadmaps for the last 2 years because there simply is no new line or supply chain set up, just small production of the old model.
What do you guys think, is there a small glimmer of hope for a new US assembled Mini?
