Sometimes when major leaks like that happen, companies will postpone announcements, I figure as they figure out how bad the leak is and probably reconfigure the announcement a little.
I wouldn’t have thought they would delay for something like that. Had it been a live event Steve Jobs might have said something like “stop me if you’ve seen this before” like he did for the iPhone 4. If it’s pre recorded it would need a reshoot if they were that bothered.
Historically the Mac event of the year is usually by this time of October, give or take a week. However emails announcing the event almost always go out a couple weeks before the event. Historically only November event I can recall was was when the M1 chip was announced in 2020, although I reckon that is fairly recent, relatively speaking.
M1 was also a post Covid launch so you have to give them some slack for delays there too.

Apple could drop a press release with no notice, even though there’s a new Mac mini form factor rumoured.

But there’s still time for the countdown to begin if they put invites out on Monday or Tuesday for an event as soon as Tuesday 29th with on sale date of November 1.

When is the next apple investors call? Edit: October 31 which is a Thursday, nice bit of symmetry if they make new m4 macs available from Friday 1st of November. All the sales will be added to the next quarter

If the leak was about some new tech that is of strategic importance then I would say a delay could be needed, but this time it is just a incremental hardware spec bump where much of it was already expected, I just don't see Apple changing anything on their part as a result (of course save the internal investigation etc).

Also if the Macs are only dropped via press release, not needing a video playback let alone an "event", then it doesn't need an announcement days before.

If the plan is to release them on Nov 1st, which is Friday week, then they've only got a short window to announce an event. Usually they give 8-9 days notice for events.

That would be if said event has an invite for press, but if it is just a video event with no press in attendance, no real prior notification is needed...?

iPad mini was released today last week, so can see them doing maybe a release each week. So maybe new MacBooks today, and new Mac mini the following week.

Gurman: Apple is hosting a hands on experience next Wednesday in Los Angeles for media/creators. So the new Macs of course need to be announced by then.
Sounds very much like launch day is going to be the Tuesday next week then and general release on Friday November 1 - the day after the earnings call - so the respective sales figures belong in the following quarter.

In person launch sounds unlikely now if they are doing a separate hands on day on the Wednesday - pre-recorded launch all the way.

Did Max Tech actually have any new information this time?
I've no idea as I would have to have watched their video. I just saw the banner graphic for the video last week which pretty much stated what Gurman is saying.

In that case, it's likely it's same as usual, Max Tech is reading MacRumors, Bloomberg, and other sites and is just repeating what they are saying.

Max Tech isn't usually a good source of new information. They do content creation benchmarks, and do summaries of rumours in the Mac world, but even then it can be problematic because they often come to inaccurate conclusions based on limited information.

BTW, a lot of people complain that Gurman just guesses. Well, while it's likely he does do that from time to time, he also sometimes comes up with very specific details that nobody else has published. These sometime turn out to be accurate. And it's not just luck because some of the details are things that usually cannot be guessed out of the blue.

"Even a broken clock is right twice a day"
Doesn’t work that way.

BTW, people do get fed info from inside sources from time to time.

Personal anecdote: I was the first in the world to post evidence about the G5 970MP Quad Power Mac, which didn’t exist at the time. However, I didn’t discover this on my own. I was pointed in the right direction to this information anonymously. I never did find out who it came from because nobody owned up to it, I suspect because it was from someone under NDA:

For release rumors especially with dates, Max Tech aggregates a few sources and summarise them, you can think of them as a video version of macrumors. So sometimes they got more info than just from Gurman alone.

For M4 Macs though it doesn't look like anyone other than Gurman has said any event / press-release related dates. One of the Russian hands on videos made a remark saying "likely an Oct 21st or 22nd announcement" which I was just using YouTube instant subtitle translation to get.

if the rumor 5 port USB c is true

would you guys want 3 ports on the back & 2 on the front?

or

4 ports on the back & 1 in the front

I imagine everyone has their preference, but for me I would like a 5-0 arrangement lol, so all cables are facing the same direction for better cable management.

But the rumors have been saying 3 back 2 front config for a few times already. Which makes sense since the back is just like the M4 MBP so maybe they share some circuitry design, while the front 2 are extras.

If it's going to be tiny little puck it wouldn't be unreasonable to just pick it up / turn it to plug in. Maybe Apple will also want to differentiate the Studio and new mini and keep those 'pro' features (haha) on the Studio.

I'm most curious to know if this thing is going to have a baseline 512GB or 256GB - basically how much money it's going to cost to up it to 1TB. I've already got 9TB of SSDs dangling off it like dreadlocks.

I wonder if this thing will be small/light enough that it will lend itself well to mounting on the back of a monitor, so it’s totally out of view, much like some people do with their Apple TV? Maybe only makes sense if you don’t need to access any ports on a regular basis.

Within 3 months there will undoubtedly be relatively inexpensive VESA mount brackets for the new Mac mini. In fact, there exist VESA mount brackets for the current bulky Mac mini too.
