Now the max is 32GB.

I think if you -like me- plan to keep it for the next decade, the upgrade to 24GB is well worth it, and I would even consider 32GB, although at that point, the M4 Pro with its much faster RAM becomes interesting…
16gb in 2024 seems low to me , a ps5 has 16gb ram
I had 16gb in 2012

Going from 16gb ram to 24gb ram worth it for $200 ?
I plan to keep this mini for a long time , my last mini lasted 10 years
I had 16gb on the last one , but that was the max
I can get by with 8 GB but 16 GB is better for me. But I’ll get 24 GB as I plan on keeping it a long time.
Most workflows won't really benefit from TB5 SSD speeds. Hell, most NMVe drives throttle after a few hundred GBs as their cache fills up making it all a bit pointless.

TB5 is OVERKILL for majority of the users.
The ones with TB5 get DisplayPort 2.1 support.

Is it finally fanless?
No

Could one take an M2 Mini and take an M4 Mini then put the logic board from the M4 Mini into the M2 Mini and run BOTH off of the M2 Mini PSU? In effect, you'd have one Mac Mini with two Minis inside it.

Anybody else wish that headphone jack port in the front was an sd card slot instead?
I’m never gonna use it , I’ll probably buy a headphone jack cover (if they sell those) so it doesn’t just collect dust in there

Also wondering why it still has a headphone jack.

I really appreciate that they made it a high impedance headphone jack. Even though I have AirPods Max, I’m seriously considering getting a nice pair of corded Sennheisers for the mini.

Lightweight, open back, great sound. You can’t get that from a Bluetooth headphone.

i'm on the fence between this $800 model and pro, i will wait for benchmarks to make a decision 🧐
The entry level pro will have about 3000 plus more on Geekbench. Probably 18000 compared to 15000 for the 10 core M4.

Memory bandwidth will be more on the pro. The GPU is also better on the pro. I upgrade often so I always trade in my old Mini and spend $300-400 to upgrade every other year when a new mini comes out.

If going for the pro that might not be a feasible option unless you are willing to lose quite a bit. My thinking is that when I am on a M6 the people with a pro will still be on an M4. To each their own but my method is like a Apple hack. 😀

But my needs are not like most users who need the pro. As a Business Analyst my computing needs are low.

But for $600 more for the pro? Not worth it to me.

If I get this over a m2 pro 16gb ram and same storage , will it be a big downgrade ?
? No how would it be a downgrade from a M2? The 10 core M4 outperforms the M2 pro, by quite a bit on single core and multicore on Geekbench.

The M4 is superior in every way. No contest.

Anyone upgrading from the M2 Pro Mac mini? I got my M2 Pro Mac mini in early 2023 with 16gb 2TB and would likely cost at least $500 to upgrade after selling the one I have now to a similar spec. It works fine, but the convenience of the front ports, speed increases and smaller form factor are nice upgrades for sure.

Another detail, if graphics/gaming is important to you: the M4 GPU has ray-tracing, the M1 and M2 do not.

I’m upgrading from 16gb/512 m2 pro to m4 base 24 /512

I didn't see this pic posted. It illustrates the motherboard design - two tiers to save space.

Better airflow too. However, it will be a dust magnet at the bottom.

The mini surely could have seen some colors too.

Space Grey or Space Black would have been nice options...

Never liked the studio design which reminds me of a Big Mac.

Not really seeing that at all...

Design wise Apple once made the G4 Cube. Pure art. This thing isn’t good looking.

Big fan of the G4 Cube, but the new Mac mini design is much cleaner...

What I want to see is an all-new Mac Pro Cube with an Extreme chip; I would think it would be the same footprint as the Mac Studio, but with the height increased to cubed proportions...

As they are now over 1U, maybe the rack mounted Mac mini market isn’t as important as some claim.

From all the pics I have seen of various CoLo facilities, the rack mounted market seems to have them all on their sides, so this new Mac mini should allow more unit density on the shelves...
