Could the new Mini, if and when it's finally released, become one of the first Macs to run the new Yosemite OS ??

It's Tuesday and the new Mac mini is here! Ignore the Apple Store, it's here! But they're not saying anything about it! The Most Silent Refresh of all time! It's here! It's here!

Oh thank God it is finally here! I have been waiting so long. Where can I get one? When can I get it? How much is it? What features does it have?

LOL!

It's totally this guys. Lol! Just stick the Mac Pro in a compacter and out comes the new Mini. Ships with Yosemite, has Broadwell and the new Iris pro. PCIe SSD's and user upgradable RAM.

Seriously though, I've been holding off for a while, even bought a 2010 MBP late last year in the meantime to take over from my 2008 MacBook. It's an improvement, but I'll be moving later this year/early next year, and would love to get a new desk and a new Mac to go with it.

What do you mean if and when? It's here! Haven't you heard? Just because Apple is not saying anything about it doesn't mean it's not here!

& I just bought one. Just walked into an Apple store and walked out with the new mini..... But wait!.. This isn't a mini!...... ohh sheeeet. I just bought an Apl TV!

I killed a sheep (humanely to eat), looked at its' entrails, and I can confidently predict that the new mini will be launched during the work-week at some point in the next few months. Also, you will meet someone that will play an important role in your life, and all signs point to maybe. :p

I would buy this without hesitating

If anything, I'm hoping the Mac Mini comes with a lower price point, or a cheaper less powerful model.

I want a home server but I don't need the power of the Mac Mini server.

If the new mini is going to keep a low price, it will probably be simplified, internally and externally. Expect the mini to lose a couple ports and ditch lots of space, combine everything onto a single board, etc. That doesn't mean it will lose computing power--that depends on what processors they use.

Apple could attempt to make a $499 version with a sad, ancient processor like they put into the recent iMac.

YOSIMITE will probably be working on many older Macs before any new ones ship with the OS.

I wouldn't call it sad; the new entry level iMac is fine for the kind of people it's aimed at, so I think a Mac Mini following suit could make sense, the only issues are requirements other than performance; i.e - if the Mac Mini is waiting for Broadwell in order to reduce heat then older processors won't really be a good choice, however Broadwell should have some lower end parts that might make a good new entry level model for tempting more switchers; especially with the added iOS integration features in Yosemite.

Apple will have to decide whether they want to compete with the NUC and BRIX with upgradeable RAM and HD.
While most of the competitors are using SATA M.2 with optional SATA3 open bay connector will be another question.
Broadwell should offer great improvement in IGPU but we have yet to see any benchmarks for the M processor.
If the unit will be ATV size it will require an external power brick and I would suspect Apple will want to keep it inside which will make it in between what the current Mini is and the ATV.
If the Mini is upgradeable it should be a great little desktop. If not I might move to the competition when I get ready to buy.

I already solved my problem: I moved to the competition and I keep using my 2010 Mac mini.

I was waiting for a Mac mini update, hoping to get a better GPU for games. Since we all "know" Apple prefers small and thin for their low-end models, and the added cost of a dedicated GPU and associated heat generated, that means they will stick with the Intel IGPU.

So because of that, and because I was tired of waiting, I just built a low-end gaming PC: Celeron G1840, 4GB RAM, GT 630 (Kepler core, fanless) and a tiny micro-ATX motherboard compatible with 2nd-generation Haswell CPUs. All those parts were on sale, 50$CAD or less each and I was able to re-use a power supply and PC tower I already had to lower the cost by another 100$CAD compared to buying new parts.

The net result is that my current 2010 Mac mini is more than enough as a work computer (Web development) and my low-end gaming PC, which I can upgrade piece by piece, cost me half of a new Mac mini.

But man, that PC sure is huge compared to my Mac mini. If anyone is considering building a gaming PC, I'll just say two things: mini-ITX motherboard and Cooler Master: Elite 110.
