Also, when it comes to compilations, iOS stinks. If I go to an artist or band who have both their own albums and songs on compilations, I want to see their work when I go to their artist entry. As it stands, I have to go to a different section to see an artists' songs on a compilation album.

This is one of those things that comes across as strictly an oversight. A symbolic one at that. It offers no utility whatsoever. I brought it up in an email exchange with an executive on the iOS Music app team and hoped by iOS 10 it'd be fixed (having assumed others had shared similar feedback).

Thankfully Marvis (and Cesium) both overcame this early on. At this point, I can't see even opening the stock app. My biggest concern is the star ratings. I'm glad they can still be adjusted in third party apps and by Siri, but I'm concerned it's a diminution that signals abandoning them completely in the future, which could mean breaking the feature in third party players as well.

On another note, has anyone deleted the music app to see how the phone handles music in your library? I assume that the Control Center buttons stop working.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but with Apple Music in iOS 10 is there a way to see your history (the songs you previously listened to)? I know this was a feature in iOS 9.

I have not tried this, but in the latest Cesium release notes, the developer recommends not deleting the Music app since it can break things, so I'm fine with hiding the Music app and deleting the other stock apps.

The Music app is still the only way to download tracks for offline, right?

Sorry if this has already been asked..

Is there a way to remove artists/songs that have been previously purcharsed but not added onto this phone from my music lists?
Also can the stars for 'popular' songs be turned off?

My second issue is, even though my music shows lyrics in the iTunes app on my computer, no lyrics show up in the iOS Music app.

I'm not seeing lyrics on my iPhone 6S, but they are showing up on my iPad Air 2.

A million thanks to whoever suggested Cesium in this thread. The awful looking music app was one of the two major reasons I'm holding out on iOS 10, today I downloaded Cesium and it's tremendous. The iOS Music app is now buried in a folder where it will stay forever. That developer is going to make a fortune selling his app to annoyed iOS 10 users and he deserves every penny of it.

I also downloaded Cesium and it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. There are more features than the stock app but everything is much more organized and looks miles better. Crazy that a single developer can make a better app than the whole team at Apple.

You're welcome :)

Someone turned me on to Cesium a year back or so and I try to pay it forward by mentioning it to others. It's become a daily app for me. Plus, the developer writes some of the funniest release notes ever, which I particularly enjoy.

For basic function its much cleaner. The player is nicer looking, playlists look nicer, it's easier to access recently added songs and to find things.

I guess if you use the star feature you'd be upset but I can't think of a single person who does.
And you've gone around asking everyone you know if they rate their music with stars, have you? Thought not.

It's irrelevant whether you use star ratings or not. They've been part of iTunes for at least 15 years and it's pretty stupid to drop a core organizing tool to make room for more cute hearts and ads for Apple Music. (Yeah, they're an organizing tool, Google "smart playlists" sometime). Just because your definition of "basic function" is very very limited, that doesn't mean everyone else's is.

I sent the guy a tip immediately out of gratitude from being cut loose from Apple's garbage.

Not sure - I think the FAQ on the Cesium website says something about how it works with any Apple Music tracks in your library whether stored locally or in the cloud. I don't use any streaming service so I can't say for sure. I have 100GB of lossless music files in my device's library and that's what I listen to with Cesium.

Thanks, had no idea you could now delete & try another music player. I wonder if it will keep track of playcount, since i use that in addition to the Last.fm Scrobbler.

As for the new Apple Music app itself, the interface feels oversimplified. I miss how the artwork had an effect on the tracklist and background color, that was super classy. Not to mention on iPad it's even worse. All that real estate and the artwork only takes up an even smaller part of the screen! Ho hum, I guess.

I would not necessarily delete the Music app. The Cesium dev doesn't recommend it, in fact. I just bury the Music app deep in a junk folder and that's that.

If anyone is looking for a good, clean music app that is reminiscent to the older iPhone music apps, give Picky a try.. It looks great, easy to use and even has a dark mode.

Hail Cesium!

The only thing Cesium lacks for me is the ability to create and edit playlists within the app. I have to go back to the native Music app to do that. But for all Cesium gives me, I can overlook that :)

Cesium should work without the music app. It just doesn’t work if you are using Apple Music and iCloud Music Library. Deleting the music app disables both, hence Cesium doesn’t work. I suspect that it will work with synced iTunes music.

Seems to be gone as well. I only found a section called ’Recently Played’ under ‘For You’. It is not a complete log though.

I downloaded Ecoute yesterday. It looks good but I noticed a small lag when adding songs to the queue. Does it happen too with Cesium? Thanks
