It does actually support lyrics if you have added them in iTunes. Play a song and press the "i" to show the info. In the top right corner there is a lyrics button. That button is only there if you have added lyrics to that track.
It doesn't work properly though. So far, I've played around 50 tracks with embedded lyrics, and it's only worked on two tracks.

Because I don't always hang out at the iPad waiting fo a song to finish. And sometimes I just want to hear 2-3 songs from a playlist of 60 or more. Or I'd like to repeat a song a few times.
But the main reason is, we can't control the way we listen to music now. Maybe this suits you... it doesn't suit me.
Glad you like it, though.

That's for the paid Apple Music service, not the Music app.

Think about it realistically. By far the majority of people who select a song in a list will want and expect that list to continue playing after that first song has finished.

If you want to hear 2 or 3 specific songs then create a playlist or manipulate the up next list. The repeat button is also present. These are easy enough ways to accomplish what you want without screwing most people over.

I keep finding things that don't work. I listened to two albums in track order, all fine. The third album I want to listen to is insisting on playing tracks in a random order, for no good reason that I can figure out. The music app was probably my most used application on the iPad by number of hours used, but now it's just a mess. Questionable navigation changes, and missing and broken features. Are there any third party alternatives that work with lyrics and star ratings?

Says who? Do you represent the majority, and if so, what are your credentials?
I'm a guitar player, and I like to listen to individual songs, whichever ones I feel like playing along to at the moment.
Think about it realistically (lol). A lot of people have mixed playlists, and they might not feel like listening to techno-pop right after a ballad, or creating a new playlist just to play a song or two when the mood strikes.
Why are you arguing about this? They decreased functionality and made it less user-friendly. Do you consider that a GOOD thing?

Wtf Apple. No lyrics display for most of my 12000 tracks, even though they are present in the files and still display fine on Mac. What is so hard about supporting embedded lyrics as well as Apple Music lyrics? I guess it's just easier to shaft your customers by not bothering.
Same issue. Found if you remove all songs and reload after you upgrade to 10 they will be back.

Unfortunately that takes a very long time, like 12 hours or more, but I'm going to have to try it. Another weird thing is that some albums bought from iTunes have random tracks duplicated, i.e. a synced copy from iTunes and another one with the cloud symbol next to it. And it looks as though there is no longer an option to only show "on this iPad" music as far as library is concerned. So some albums which have a load of crappy bonus tracks which I don't want, I can't get rid of anymore. I'm totally unimpressed with Apple over this mess.

If you have problems with your playlists whereby you don't like techno-pop right after a ballad then you need to be much smarter with your playlists.

You're throwing your toys out of the pram over something that is trivial and in an edge use case, that you have a work around for and which most people wouldn't want. And I think you know that because you're being incredibly defensive about it in an unnecessarily aggressive manner.

Some people are born whingers I guess.

That's for sure! You're happy with simple, reduced functionality and a less user-friendly app, and you're arguing with me because I'm not. What do you care, anyway, if you're happy with it? Talk about whinging! You always have to be right, huh? That's trolling, son
I left high school years ago, so I'm not going to get drawn into this argument any further.
You're right, I'm wrong. Nobody needs this flexibility. And, as a bonus, if you want to feel better, I won't reply to you from now on so you can have the last word.
You win. Happy now? LOL!

Wow. Your posts are crazy. If you can't string together rational thought that should be an indication that you're over exaggerating this supposed problem of yours.

That didn't work for me, it was one of the first things I tried.
That's disappointing, as I am trying removing and resyncing now. Even that process went wrong though! I left it overnight and it appeared to have finished this morning, but there were 1,600 tracks missing on the iPad afterwards which I am doing a second sync to correct. What a mess.

Is anyone else missing the loop/unloop toggle on the music app? Or is it just me? I can't see it anywhere after the upgrade to ios10.

Pimping Cesium because the iOS 10 Music app is a disaster. Thankfully we have 3rd party developers who can do Apple better than Apple can these days.

I mean really, look how clean and beautiful this app is! I went with the low contrast and black font to most closely emulate iOS 6 player.

I would say yes to all, but certainly Cesium. There's really no point if they couldn't since most people have downloaded music from iTunes.

I will try Cesium tomorrow!

I had tried one other over the weekend - an esoteric audiophile quality player, and it refused to play DRM songs.

It's my layman's understanding that there are basically two types of music player that can access your library. This is a simplification...

One type is essentially a skin/interface for the native app and so it should have no problems with DRM. Examples are Cesium, Ecoute and (my favorite) Marvis.

The other kind is pretty much an independent standalone player.
Examples are CanOpener, Picky, and Onkyo HF. On the plus side these have more sophisticated tools that can modify sound or in some cases (like CanOpener and Onkyo) handle FLAC files. On the downside, they don't seem to handle play counts, play histories, etc.

I tried the Lite (free) version of Relisten Player which does modify sound. It couldn't play many of my iTunes songs stating the issue was DRM.

This is correct. Certain apps will just use the official iOS music library populated by either Apple Music tracks or a mix of songs transferred via iTunes, purchased from the iTunes Store, downloaded through iTunes Match.

Other apps will have their own storage separate from the iOS music library (or stored in the cloud through a service like Dropbox or OneDrive). Tracks with DRM will probably not be playable through the latter.

I HUNGER
I use Ecoute and for a buck it's does what I need and looks superior to Apple's app. It's a skin app, so it has siri functionality. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact it keeps playing even after you force quit the app. That's annoying as it's easier to force quit the app than to stop the song from playing I find. But I might give cesium and Marvis a look.

The new music app is much better and intuitive, but there are some disturbing issues as well:
1. When you have a song playing and minimize that to a mini player, there is only a play/pause and next track buttons. The only way to see the previous track button is to tap the mini player to stretch to normal view.
2. in iOs 9 you can just tap on the artist thumbnail to play all of his/ her albums in Chronological order, now you cant do that in iOs 10. Now there is only Artist > Shuffle all. Or Artist > choose 1 album, since can't play all albums.
3. in iOs 9 when you plug in your headphone, it will automatically pops up the music player in the lock screen. Now in iOs 10 nothing happens.
