New iMacs, come on already!!

I'm really thinking that Aug 7th will be the date. Certain retail chains have not had any iMacs shipping for the last 3 weeks, which means a change is just around the corner. Only "Big Box" stores will be seeing any remaining stock dumped to their door before a big release! My two guesses are:
1. two 20" models (ala 17"s) and the 24"
2. a 20", 24" and a 28", the 28" designs are getting popular with other vendors, like Viewsonic etc.
I really doubt Apple will put out a 30" iMac, it's just pushing the boundary out of the consumer league, where those people should be buying the MacPro and a professional screen. As far as price, that's a tough call, if they do away with a $999 model (even though nobody buy's it), that makes it tough for people like me to offer Mac as an alternative, and THEN upsell them to a Mac that will meet their needs longer. The Mac Mini needs to become a slightly larger form factor with a core 2 duo and a 7200 rpm hard drive for $699/$799. A true mini tower, MacPro junior! I would love to see a entry level Mac without a screen with just a bit more "oomph" behind it.
Just my thoughts...

I don't think a 30" screen is out of the consumer league. With the amount of media material on computers these days, I don't see how a huge screen isn't attractive to those who want to watch movies and TV on their computer.

Considering that there is no Core 2 Duo that runs with a clockspeed of 3Ghz, I find that an interesting choice. :)
Also, I don't see Apple doing a 30" iMac but besides that, they won't ship anything other than BTO machines with 3GB of RAM for a long time.

What about the Core 2 Extremes?

People have 32", 36", 37", 42", 46", 52", etc TV screens. But I have a 27" viewsonic here at work and it's about 18-22" from my face. My home screen would be about that far. That is big enough to not do damage to my eyes. I think that a 30" screen, while in use by professionals is too big for the home user. At this point I think at 27" really is the true high end sweet spot. My guess if they release one, it will be $2,099 or $2,199 with the 20" dropping to $1,399 and the 24" dropping to $1,899. The 20" could go down another $100 but with the case redesign, unless Apple is going to try to be aggressive in the market and make up for R&D and higher component costs at today's supply prices by lowering prices to drive volume, then I could easly see the prices staying the same or barely dropping.

The 20" could realistically be priced anywhere from $1,199 to $1,499.
The 24" could start as low as $1,499 and go up from there, possibly to it's current price point depending on whether there is a 27" or larger version.
The 27" would be a high end target no matter what and won't be less than $1,999 and I doubt it would be that low. And while I would put the high end price at $2,299, I wouldn't put $2,499 out of the question. Just don't expect much volume at that price.

Apple must bring back translucent colors to the new iMacs! That would be great. :)

What about the Core 2 Extremes?

The new Core 2 Extreme mobile versions run 2.6 with a 2.8 on the way from what I remember. The Conroe Core 2 Extreme is a desktop chip and highly unlikely based on power consumption and heat/necessary cooling that it will make its way into an iMac. Remember, the iMac is sorta like a large-screen tablet in terms of cramming components and a screen in a fairly small space.

Yup, that's the exact reason I've put off buying an iMac. Would it kill Apple to get some decent desktop components in their "desktop" machines?

No. If you MUST have it. Colorware.
Otherwise leave the colors to the Nanos and Shuffles.
Colored iMacs are no more necessary than changable cellphone faceplates.

Hey I'm back on the iMac forum now... after participating in the iPhone and iPhone Nano forum a lot. I like that design but where would the remote be placed? I mean the iMac right now has a spot for the remote.

For some reason, maybe consumers with a iPhone should be using it as a remote XD

I still liked the G4 iMac. =)

Yep, I'm still hoping Apple makes some sort of iMac G4 reincarnate as the next iMac.

While this would please a lot of retro fans, you've got to realize that Apple would never do this, certainly not now at least. They want to be the cutting edge of design, making something new that really wows people.

Why not? Apple went back to the brushed aluminum colors for the 2nd gen Nanos, why not put some new and old together in the new iMac?

I think the biggest change will be the box it comes in..and, uh...thats about it.

But it will be an insanely great box...very cool.

I want a iMac aimed at teen users (13-16ish) featuring a lower price point, colours and a bundled game :p

Hah, yeah right... would be good though.

I want a Red iMac, the ones Colorware do are to die for!

No it wouldn't.

I think everything will change. I'm waiting for that to happen. Once it does, I'm snatching up the largest iMac available at that point.

Cheers.

Transparent OLED - ETA?

I'm surprised no one has reposted this old-new design:

Link here.

Holy ----! Why is Apple wasting their time on LCDs with big, white chins and edges as on the current iMac??? Apple should have something like this concept design.... Apple should be spending their resources on developing a transparent OLED as seen on Minority Report, etc. This would be awsome! WHEN? WHEN? WHEN?
