I've seen that, and while I love that design and idea, we are talking about the NEXT iMac design. Unfortunately I don't think technology is quite there, at least not outside of the military sector.

Thanx for the link. It's now my wallpaper.

Yuk!!! I can see right through the screen, that really sucks. Imagine the impracticality of seeing that bridge when looking @ your screen...

To be honest, I don't think that is what we'll see in a future iMac. The clear, thin displays will be a reality though. Although when the screen is on, you won't be able to see through it.

When the parts get small enough to resemble that image, they'll be small enough to fit in a cellphone. It'd be like a reverse Moore's law: they will get so small to a point where once they pass a line, they can get microscopic.

I think future computers, maybe this is 20 years from now, will be our cellphones, wristwatches, wallets, or something we always carry on us. And they will hook up to displays and keyboards and mice.

------

So back to the next iMac, the one that's within 6 months (logically)...

I really want to see that patent where the camera is embedded into the display is realized. Think of the possibilities! But I wonder what that says for price/thickness/technology etc.

Look at the pic on the top left and read at the link

"The iMac features a 30" utra-thin LCD screen, which is totally transparent when the iMac is not in use. The screen can also be set to various levels of translucency, and can fade during sleep modes etc. The keyboard is also totally tramsparent, low profile and a curved ergonomic design, with light sensitive illuminated keys.
Everything is of course, wireless."

He was illustrating the transparency. But the top left pic shows the screen in normal mode. You can't see the Apple logo or drive.

Ok, someone has pushed your angry button today.

Those pics are so small it's kinda hard to see. ANyways that is a sexy concept!

All in one ethos: The mac is all about simplicity in the home. The do all iMac with it's iLife is seen as the epitome of the apple ideal.

Wait... the Mini does came with iLife, right? (If not, I'm gonna be one pissed customer; buying a mini soon)

The iLamp was awesome, and they should go back to it. Obviously, the iMac is gonna stay all-in-one (I hope) so how creative can you get?

Hmm... maybe they could put the CPU in (on) the base of the current iMac so it would be a thicker base, thinner screen?

One thing they should add to the iMac is make the remote charge when it's "stuck" to the side of the iMac. My toothbrush charges through layers of plastic, why can't my remote?

i don't see how they can change most of it... I really like the form factor. the only thing i would change is :
more USB ports + 1 front USB port for my thumb drive

I honestly love the current iMac....

Just make ALL models, not just the 24", VESA-mount compatible, lose (most, if not all) the "chin," and make it a wee bit thinner. Also, at least make it so parts can me upgraded...

It will be quite interesting to see the next imac design. Its hard to really say where apple is going to take this one but i'm sure something really amazing is in the works. I thinking maybe a flatter screen, with a thinner hard drive with the same or higher capacity. Im also maybe expecting the ports to be shifted around. They will stay on the back most likely but they will probably move further down. I dont think there going to make the imac screen larger 24 in is pretty big already, probably too big for some desks. I know its too large for mine. Or they might simply bring in the colors like the old imacs. Its surprising how people will get inspired to spend money simply because of a color change. The black macbook for example is like 200 dolors more simply because its black... why?

I wonder what takes up the most room? Is it the logic board? The hard drive? The Power?

Here's a mini poll:

Would you prefer a thicker iMac with no chin, or the current one with a chin?

Wanted to participate in your poll but i dont know what you mean by chin.

I would say the power supply and the hard drive take up the most space or at least that what makes the imac as heavy as it is. But i would prefer that the power supply stay inside, it gives it a more stand alone look.

Personally i like the chin, it gives the imac a bit of character, i'd hate it to look like a ACD, and i think i'm the only one round here that will say that

they should take the imac g5/intel look, mini, and g4 look, and make a screen held by glass, a slightly larger mini shaped base, and connect them with metal like on the current imac, plus make it adjustable from the screen or base. lastly, make a simple add on to make the base mount to a wall and swivle left and right. insted of a metal type look like in the current mini's, make it have a glass look. with the glass screen and base, plus the metal connection, this would look sweet! (i love metal on glass):D

I think they should change the sizes. Have a 15", a 17" a 20" and a 25" to even it off. They would also shave off more of the sides, the part at the bottom w/power supply, Improve iSight capabilities, add a magnet to the left side for the apple remote. Change the apple remote to match the 2g shuffle, put a basic alarm on the remote (I dont know what I would do without my little buddy). Reduce the size of the foot by a fraction (dont want the iMac falling over and breaking ;) ) A firewire 800 on every model except the 15"
, have a superdrive on all models, increase the speed on the 17, 20, and 25" put a 4x superdrive on the 15"... so basically the 15" would be the new 17". Oh, and the reason for the 15" is because I am on a 17" and I really dont need the screen size, I would've liked a 15" option. Throw the option for semi-decent graphics in for those people who want to play NWN or WoW or...well thats like.. it. :p just playing.

no offence buddy, but 15 inch screens are sooooo 1999.:p

Well I think eventually the only difference will become screen size...

But as far as the next iMac goes, 17" will remain low end and 24" will remain high end.

Until electronics break the size barrier and performance / capaicty / price / etc. barriers, screen size will dictate computer performance.

For computers that are integrated with a screen (i.e. laptops, the iMac).

I can see, as consumer needs increase, the 17" falling away much as the 15" fell away. People always need more! It will be interesting to see where screen size will eventually become 'too big'. ANd as desktop screens get bigger we still have people vying for the smaller 12" screen laptop. No one is ever satisfied!

I dont think its so much what people need but what you offer. Nobody needed a 24 inch imac until it was offered and due to human condition people have confused there needs with their desires. I think with the introduction of flash memory to be used with hard drives, the size of the hard drive will decrease, and these hard drives will probably produce less heat and less power consumption. This might allow apple to make the power supply smaller which will also decrease the size or the width of the i mac itself. I think that they might come with a HD adapters and its also very possible that these new imacs will have the blue ray drives. And im sure the new imacs will have the N standard in wireless connectivity. I think they should also improve the speakers on the imac. It would be nice to use Bose technology in the new imac. What ever it might be we can be quite certain that it will look like a work of art.

forget 24" being the biggest: can you say, "50?" :D

I am destroying your fun. Seriousity killed the cow.

This size thing is a bit childish! We all know that the biggest meanest display is the 30 inch right? And I think that's goanna be around for a while, we still need to get the iMac graphics powerful enough to actually drive the beast!
