Just a thought here.

Apple likes small. So, perhaps the new iMac will be like the iPod. You'll have everything contained in a small device that is the size of an iPod Video. Everything will be displayed on a 4-inch screen.

Small is in. The iMac is too large. Time to get rid of all those obsolete 24-inch iMacs and move up to the cutting edge in 4-inch high-res screens. Oh, you'll need the new Apple iGlasses to see what you're doing.

Haha, the new iMac is embedded into your brain: no external display necessary!
:)

Well, let's hope they have the leaking capacitors and smoking power supplies worked-out then.

Otherwise, we'll see a huge class-action suit on that one.

And you thought drugs would fry your brain. This is your brain on Apple...

i think the imac would be cool if they went retro and bought it in the form of the 1984 mac a lil or just do it for a next anniversy mac

If Apple really wants to increase its market share ..... it's gotta release a gaming iMac ......

My 20" C2D iMac handles games pretty nicely, I'm getting decent frame rates in WoW and CoD plus no annoying crashed like my old PCs. If you want anything faster than an iMac for games go for a Mac Pro and a good LCD monitor with a faster refresh rate.

Personnally I think next update the iMac will look the same but have a slightly better video card (nVidia 7300) and a faster C2D CPU. :apple:

But I do think Apple should bring back the good old coloured iMacs they really did look cool and considering we can get coloured iPods the we should be able to get the same choices for the iMac range.

If Apple were to put more emphasis of gaming into their products, they wouldn't just limit it to the iMac. It would be across the board.

Gosh but that's not possible (I know)!

The mutli-thought interface is still at least two years away! (June 2009)

I truthfully dont think it would be a good idea for apple to create a gaming machine. I think they should simply extend the width of the imac a little to allow for anoteher dimm slot for memory and also allow people upgrade their graphics card if they so choose. If apple simply adds those options to imac it wont be necessary to create a whole line of computer just for gaming.

Apple has always been great with design aspect of computers. Im sure there's a way to change things around in the current imac that will better support the more graphics intensive games.

I do agree that apple should embraces the possible users that will need their machine for gaming. They are a small percent of users but they are also users that will spend more money on a machine, this a good thing for apple and its stock. If apple is smart it will make the imac a more universal computer, media, business, education, gaming etc...

I used to disagree with you, but as time has passed I agree. The only thing that I really feel Apple needs is a Mac mini Pro. A Mac mini with more RAM slots, a full sized HDD and optical drive bay, and a slightly better GPU (replaceable would be cool, but not necessary). A midsized tower would be cool, and I'd probably buy it but, really, a slightly improved mini would suffice.

Did they really have to make it 6x6x2" or whatever? Would anyone have noticed had it been 8x8x4"? Could have put in a full sized HDD and optical drive, a little more space for RAM and cooling to support a slightly hotter GPU... ah well.

Yep, I'd buy that one.

I suspect that the current Mac Mini isn't going anywhere. The new Apple T.V. and the new Airport hub match it's appearance and likely it's dimensions. So, they probably intend them to be stackable items to compliment each-other's appearances.

But, a mini-tower or larger Mini with a real hard drive (3.5-inch 7200 R.P.M.) and a dedicated graphics card with at least a Core2Duo would be just about all it would take to make a sale to me.

Buy or wait?

I'm willing to buy an iMac 24", but I don't want to spend 2000$ and then in a few months totally new redesign comes out.

If the next iMac upgrade is processor or graphics upgrade: really doesn't mind, Leopard coming out also doesn't bother me because I can always buy it separetly....BUT if it's a totally new design, it would be very sad for me!!

So, what should I do? Buy or Wait?

PD: I've also thought the idea of buying a mac mini g4 2nd hand "time pass" and then buy a totally redesigned iMac 24" somewhere in the mid. 2007...

What should I do?

don't you like the current design? what's wrong with it? it's unlikely that the upcoming imac will look totally different, therefore you should go with the mac pro which you can hide under your desk.

Mac minis, in my opinion, shouldn't be bought second hand. They're consumer oriented already, so I'd at least go with an intel processor.

I'd also wait for the iMac refresh. It's coming up soon...we all know that. When is the question.

Yeah, sure, I love the current design. But I don't want to have the "obsolete" design just few months after buying my iMac. If it comes in 1 year, no problem, but if it's coming in few months, I think it's better to have the LATEST one ;-)

They dont update iMacs everyday. I would wait.:apple:

OK, I think I'll wait but...
1- rumors say for now there is no new processors... so there is no reason for updating now! They say they'll wait for Santa Rosa to make a fully-new-iMac! But santa rosa is coming in October 2007 !!

Will they make a new iMac with just few changes by March07 and then totally redesign it in November 07 with Santa Rosa? Or totallly redesign by Mid-07?

So the question is: next iMac will be the re-designed one or they'll make a last version before redesigning?
If it's the 2nd option, I think I can straight buy it now! Because my only worries is the "latest" Design! GPU or processor speed update really don't bother me!

Typically all apple products are refreshed (on average) at least twice a year.

Yeah, for sure the next iMac is very close BUT the next iMac:

-will suffer a normal hardware refresh (processor+gpu update).

-OR will have a totally new design?

If it's the 1st thing, I don't really mind, and I'll buy my iMac right tomorrow (current Proccessor+GPU are more then enough for my Home use!)

If it's the 2nd, I'll wait, because I want to have the latest one!

So, what do you think the next iMac upgrade will be?

The current design has been in place since 2004, as has seen G5, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors. I think Apple is happy with the design, and thus, they will improve it in the next generation. The most logical step, then, would be to make it thinner than it currently is. I would also like to see more USB 2.0 ports on it... in this day and age, three just isn't enough!

Yeah, and how does the mac mini warrant more usb ports than the iMac?

That just doesn't make sense to me.

I guess the argument could be made that the bundled iMac keyboard includes a couple of USB ports, but they are 1.1, so you can't use something as simple as your iPod.

Yeah, that's true. But Steve (when introducting the mac mini) said they prefer buyers to use their own products (slightly joking, not to insinuate others aren't allowed/won't work). I'm sure many people have the Apple keyboard and mouse for their mac mini as well.

have a look at the G4 imac! it's design isn't obsolete only because it's a couple of years old. many people would like to see the imac going back to this design. and it's the same with the G5/C2D imac, timeless beauty, never obsolete. so buy it now if you don't need the latest technology.
