I don't think there should be any doubt that there will be a redesign with the new MBP. You only have to look at the recent update including Force Touch, but not the butterfly keyboard... because the latter would require a redesign. Unless you think that the MBP isn't going to get the keyboard update.

I doubt the update will appear until next year, but I wouldn't be putting too much stock in the lack of leaks. Calling it a redesign is likely overstating it. It will get a little slimmer, we'll probably get some colour options, new ports and maybe an all metal design. It's not going to be significantly different.

I just hope they keep the SD Card slot and move to USB C charging.

I'm about to cave and pick up the current model.

I feel bad but I need one now so really I have no choice.
I am on the same boat.... would likely wait if it was for sure October....November Max for an updated version...but seems unlikely now...

LG just launched a new light laptop range. It's a MacBook weight with MacBook Air CPU. Time for Apple to wake up and do something..

I'm really glad I can't afford a new ultra portable Mac. The performance, the ports, the keyboard and the trackpad on the Macbook would really piss me off. But paying a thousand euros/dollars for a laptop(MBA) with a crappy display also isn't a good choice.

Yeah but we want POWER, hence the MacBook Pro thread hehe.

Got my new MacBook but need to exchange due to a fan noise issue.

Overall I'll be happy to use this until the new one comes out and then consider a quick upgrade. It's a decent upgrade from an early 2013 rMBP. I appreciate the faster Iris Pro integrated graphics whereas I had to turn integrated off on my older model because it wasn't up to scratch. The new trackpad is great and of course fast SSD performance (the thing boots almost instantly). I noticed some better performance in gaming in Boot Camp but I suspect that's mainly due to an extra 1 GB of VRAM compared to the now poultry 1 GB I had in the 650M.

What swung me in the end was not only the need for work use but that I think it's worth waiting at least 3 months after the redesign is released for Apple to iron out any kinks in the new design, which invariably always happens with new Apple hardware. So I can see myself holding on to this for at least 6 to 9 months.

Nice philosophy. Finding happiness in being poor. I think the new Macbook is simply the best product on the market. Thought myself it was underpowered, but I get by excellent. The extra second or two I have to wait for my 36 megapixel RAW files isn't bothering me. Actually packed down my Mac Pro along with my 30 inch screen last week, only using this small "underpowered" device.

Used a Macbook Pro 15 recently and I was amazed how big it was, the same with Pro 13. Could never go back. This is the first computer I can use for everything and at the same time bring with me.

After the performance jump with El Capitan there is no real issues anymore. It's great to have a single computer for everything. Not having to sync files between the different devices is convenient. Again, not looking back.

The day that Apple gives up MagSafe (One of their best laptop inventions ever) will be a sad day.

Hello smashed laptops.

Why would that be so sad?

If USB-C type would replace it, I wouldn't be bothered since it would mean an extra port which can be used for other things as well. The only reason I can imagine which makes it a bit sad is because they couldn't make it magnetic anymore. Therefor I think it's kinda 50/50. I hope for the best of both worlds, many USB-C connectors but the MagSafe as well.

Since I finally decided to step-away from lurking zone and participate, here's my full list of wanted expectations:

- New body colors, non-glowing logo.
- shift to 14' and 16' screens, while maintaining same body sizes.
- new keyboard mechanics, hope it will have a lot of key travel though.
- 2 USB type A ports, 2-4 usb type C ports(that are also doubled as thunderbolt).
- 50%-50% chance for sdcard-slot && hdmi output to be kept.
- Probably apple will provide new implementation of magsafe that is based on top of usb-c port and has magnetic connector somewhere in a middle of a cable. It will help protect from accidental roping laptop to the ground, while reducing port variance(thus providing space for additional usb-type-c's).

Because MagSafe is excellent for preventing people tripping over your laptop cable and ruining your laptop ( as I have done to an Acer laptop, due to lack of MagSafe.

agreed and not to mention that fall for a $3000 rMbp is not covered under apple care

I can't count the number of times MagSafe has saved me, a family member or a friend a lot of money. I see it all the time. MagSafe is just one of those things that makes the MacBook so much better than many PC laptops.

So what? Apple just invents the magnetic USB-C. Problem solved. ;)

Then wouldn't it be incompatible with normal Usb C?

Also the battery in a MacBook Pro needs to be a lot bigger than that of a MacBook retina right? Wouldn't it take a long time to charge over USB C?

Unkess it's based on the thunderbolt standard, that can power devices up to 100w. Current rMBPs are rated at 85w so it's possible.

No idea really what Apple might do, but what I'd really love to see is a 13" rMBP with a MBA wedge-shaped design. In 2013 I replaced my 2010 MBA with another MBA, even though I could have gone with a rMBP with a retina screen and slightly better performance for a slightly lower price. I had the original MBA and love that the bottom edge is so close to the desk and now find a lip uncomfortable to use. Next year when I replace the 2013 MBA the choice will probably between the rMB and rMBP as I see the MBA's being phased out, but I suspect even the 2nd generation rMB's will be too short on horsepower. A wedge design rMBP would be just as perfect as the rMBA we're never likely to see :D

I think the next macbook pro will be thinner and have more storage and a USB type C port added.

Maybe MagSafe 3 is required... slimmest version yet!

I agree. MagSafe and Apple's trackpads are the two things competitors just can't (or seemingly don't want to) match.

Microsoft had magnetic power connector on surface tablet. IBM track point for is is much better than any trackpad though. Having hands on keys at all times is so efficient.

No track point is what kept me from getting a mac for many years. A track point add-on would be awesome.

Depends on your opinion of the trackpad. I really don't like the force touch trackpads, but I have always thought the standard multitouch trackpad is the best ever. Not just in regards to the trackpad itself, but the gesture and integration with the computer.
