So does this signal the eventual end of the DS line? I really like my DS. I've been playing older DS games and "New" 3DS-only games as well. Heck, I've even been playing on my old AGS-101 still to finish up old Metroid games and some others. I'm interested, but only because it's Nintendo. I don't know if I think it looks gimmicky or not. I can see the usefulness, but wonder about battery life, and how the games will really look when you're going portable. One of my gripes with Nintendo is how long it takes them to get off their butts and do something (first party title development) -- albeit their first party titles are amazing. I just wish they would do MORE.

The WiiU and 3DS are basically RIP.
This is great so Nintendo can tell developers "only one console to develop for and it's at home and portable"

Also this video is so liek soemthing Apple would do. Simlar style videos have been seen at a few Apple keynotes. I think Miyamoto and Nintendo has learnt a lot from being with Tim Cook of recent. I am sure they talked about more than Super Mario Run. This video is not traditionally Japanese at all, like the previous reveals.

Everyone now understands what the Switch is, basically thew rumours got it right. So far Nintendo is on a winner. Games like Breath of the Wild totally portable is huge.

Uses a custom Tegra. I would assume this is more powerful than the Tegra 1 but we will not find that out for a while yet.

I guess it looks interesting, leaves us with many questions though. What are the specs? Does the docking station have additional processing power to offer high res output for the tv? How much processing power can the portable unit actually contain while providing decent battery life? Will multiplayer games have super simplified control schemes so they can be played on half a controller per player?

I am reading on beyond3d that the dev units run Tegra X1. So the speculation is that the Switch itself either is using X1 on a smaller die (for power consumption improvements) or they are using/waiting on the Tegra X2 to e available in greater quantities.

I really hope they get online multiplayer right. Nintendo really seems to not want to do that. They expect people will meet up in person to play together and the preview video is more evidence of that.

Also hope any digital based purchases are tied to account and not to the machine. Please.

Hope so. If it turns out to be Tegra X1, then its not going to be that much different (perhaps less than) the wii u. I won't spend €400 on a console to replace my Wii U that is not significantly more powerful.

It would also mean the big issue with the last two generations of home console would still persist. Forget most multi-platform titles appearing on it ...

It also all looked very cheap TPU rubbery from the videos. The controllers looked tiny, and it just lacked elegance. The screen in the launch videos also looked very washed out, like really cheap laptop screens with poor viewing angles do.

Honestly ..... this could be in my entire life, the first Nintendo console I will never buy ... and that makes me sad.

Looks cool. About time we get a true console/handheld hybrid from Nintendo.

I just watched the video, and it is actually quite good. The use cases shown in the video are (of course) contrived, but it actually makes a great case for having something that docked is a regular game console, that you can then take with you on the go.

My only gripe...I'm not a big fan of the new pro controller, with the 2 joystick/thumbsticks uneven, like the Xbox controller. I guess I'm a weirdo...

I'm sorry but this has been the console i've been waiting for. I've always wanted a current gen console you can carry around and play portably. Plus, almost full 3rd party support. Day one purchase for me.

They can't please everyone in that area, I for one cannot get used to a layout other than like the Xbox but i know many people who can only play with PS4 style controllers

1. Tegra X1 is not current gen power though. It's between PS3 & Wii U. We don't know if it will be any more powerful than Tegra X1, only the dev kits are all Tegra X1.

2. Also Where are you getting 'full 3rd party developer support' ?

So far Ubisoft & Bethesda seem to be the only ones with a game for the system and it's Just Dance 2017. (Hardly the kind of game from a 3rd party we want .... ) and Skyrim which does look good but is clearly from the footage running at resolution akin to PS3 / Xbox 360.

Indeed the footage of Zelda (assumingly from Switch) available now on youtube is clearly 720p or sub 720p resolution if you look at the considerable aliasing in the buildings and distant objects. A lot of shimmer.

It really isn't all that surprising after reading about the NX rumors for months. Wii U should've been what the Switch is. Just not much of a gamer though or even a Nintendo fan anymore. I prefer gaming with Sony. Neither Microsoft or recent Nintendo consoles have ever interested me with their exclusives.

Still want a PS4 slim just to attach my Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB and watch all my movies and shows on it. Then I can pick up a second hand PS Vita slim which seems alot more comfortable to hold than a Nintendo Switch whether the controllers are attached or not.

I like the Switch design but the concept isn't surprising since this where Wii U was kinda headed to anyway. And for $300-$400? Hell no. Just get a cheapo Vita with a bunch of PS2 digital downloads and be done with it. Nintendo Switch should sell over 40-50M though unlike the flop that was with Wii U at under 15M.

They showed Skyrim & NBA2k17 in the preview. They listed a couple dozen major studios as partners. There's possibilities like Persona 5, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter. Now, will they all abandon ship in the first year? No ones can say right now but it's clear Nintendo has brought the 3rd party players back into the Nintendo platform.

We will see, two home console generations being burned on that front after as you say the initial launch year, I have grown very sceptical.

I am still concerned if power wise there is such a gulf between PS4 & XB1 and NX/Switch developers will simply not bother making a 'gimped' version of the game. Time will tell, it's Nintendo and developers than needs to deliver and convince me to be there on launch day.

Actually watching the video again and again, the one thing that occurs to me ....

Is this a touch screen device ?

At no point does anyone in the launch videos touch the screen or interact with it directly ...

Someone posted the (alleged) specs on Reddit and it says it's a capacitive touch screen with 10 point multitouch. Can't verify if the specs are real or not.

Edit: here are the "specs" http://pastebin.com/UD1Vx9rf

I am buying this day one. Interested to see if this has any web browser and app support. I would gladly leave the iPad at home for trips if it has some light productivity features

Those are Tegra X1 specifications, and as far as we know, it should likely be very close to Tegra X2 specifications. And we know from Nvidias press release that it runs a custom Tegra design.
I also wouldn't put much into the touch rumors so far.

I like good displays. The selling point for me will be if they include an OLED display on the tablet.
Price is an issue, so not very likely.

It is normal for early console developer kits to run much slower than the final product, just to get developers started working. So X1 dev kits is likely, while the new custom design is something quite different.

Heck, the earliest Xbox 360 developer kits were modified Powermac G5's. :p

This thing is a fanless tablet. How powerful can it be?

I've bought every Nintendo console since SNES, most probably will pick this up. I do wish they'd just make a normal home console with more horsepower and without the gimmick, but of course they wouldn't be Nintendo lol.

Not sure why Nintendo can't just answer whether it has a touch screen.

Rather ambiguous answer to the question when IGN asked ...

Were assuming it has based on redit specs, but they could be just Tegra Nvidia shield specs, but given they haven't demonstrated that in anyway so for (even in the video scenarios) how would you all feel if they later clarified that it did not have a touch screen ??

Even though I am not completely over enthusiastic with the Switch, I still might get it next year in March. Nintendo stopped being my favorite video game software and hardware maker since the 1990's, but for some reason I do end up buying every console from them except the recent Wii U.

The Switch harks back to the days of the Sega Nomad but with more modern console specs. The Genesis specs was basically ancient by the time Nomad was released. And PSP 3000 was already quite dated by the time they offered a TV out. My biggest surprise was actually the design. For Nintendo standards, it is quite attractive.

Kudos to Nintendo for keeping it so secretive for so long. An iPhone can no longer have that privilege. The element of surprise and mystery is still there from Nintendo. Wished Apple still had that
