Excellent! I was hoping that this is what they would do! Are these Nintendo Accounts though not the same ones that we already have for things like Super Mario Run? (I linked my Nintendo Account to my existing NintendoNetworkID back when I signed up for that, which game me a separate user name for my Nintendo Account, but it automatically used the account name that it had associated with it on my WiiU).

Yeah its still tied to your NintendoNetworkID but will give you a proper UserName like on PSN & Xbox Live :)

This has probably been discussed but is anyone exclusively going digital for games? I will probably go physical for big (data-wise) games and digital for the rest.

Probably a bit of both for me since we're using sd cards for extra storage instead of external drives. My Xbox One game collection is huge and almost all digital d/t the external hard drive support. I started my Wii U with discs but switched to all digital the last year and a half for the same reason.

I'll probably do "smaller" games digitally but the bigger ones, like Zelda, will be via cartridge. I've ordered a 256gb card though so I've got plenty of room in the near future if I want to do all digital.

That's likely what I'll do.

At this point I've almost gone full digital on my PS4 and Vita due to convenience and with my current living conditions, being essentially digital-only helps me to save space. There will still be some games I buy the physical versions of (Persona 5, Persona Dancing All Night, etc), but I need some way to fill up that 2TB drive I put into my PS4. ;p

Physical editions are also re-sellable, which I assume the digital version aren't.

Some games can fetch quite a high price if you keep them for a number of years. Heck, just look at what Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii goes for sometimes.

Well it seems first game that won't fit into your Switch's onboard storage will be Dragons Quest Heroes which is reportedly a 32gb download ...

I find this one perplexing as I have it on my PS4 Pro (the deluxe edition) digitally) and it's 23gb ...

If we do start seeing game capacity as high as ps4 & xb1 games, it's going to be costly buying more and more Micro SD cards that it may end up being financially more sensible to buy on physical cartridge ....

I can get 3 128gb memory cards on 3 for 2 at CPW for £65, so effectively £22 each.

I've just bought my first 3 with staff discount ready so I will definitely have enough storage to be able to download the likes of SnipperClips etc.

I intend to physically buy the majority, as I like to have my games in a box so I can trade in if needed. I don't generally trade games I loved in, or ones that I want in my collection all the time. But games like Bomberman R may end up getting traded after a while as it's one I'm taking a punt on purchasing. I may not like it as much as I think I might so I've got the option then to sell it if needed.

Physical versions.

Main reason... when(and you know they will) they release a SwitchLite or Switch1.5, I wont have to deal with the hassle of moving content over.

Still waiting to hear more about their VC policy tho :/ (these will have to be digital purchases unfortunately)

Very true what you say about the cartridges. I wl still do a mix of downloaded and cartridge games, as there are pro-s and cons to each method., n one hand I love being able to have all the games on the device and not have to worry about bringing cartridges, but on the other hand, it does limit you in the sense that you can't continue playing a game where you left off the same way you can by simply slotting your cartridge in one of your other devices. (I have a few models of 3DS, and that element of the equation always used to bug me) just plug it into a different cartridge and have all your game saves. (should be interesting to see if game saves will be cloud based though in future, as this would totally solve that problem). Being as that's already how you do it on Super Mario Run, it's possible that this is how online content will work. (otherwise I can't really see the point in the subscription fee when they start charging for it) - But if it is what they turn out to do when they announce the full details, I would totally pay for that!! I've been wishing for this to happen for a long time!

As for If they do bring out a lite version of the Switch, I probably won't bother unless they do a clamshell design like the 3DS. (the screen is far far safer screen with a flip-top lid). Other than that, I really love nearly everything about the Nintendo Switch as it is, but the open screen of the Switch is actually my biggest worry about it. (You can get glass screen protectors for it though like these ones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9RG3XS , and I've done that just to be on the safe side, but I'd still totally prefer it if the screen was less vulnerable in the first place like all the 3DS consoles are!)

I really like the boxart. it might sound insane today but i like having the physical tangible product.

Those Switch cartridges are tiny, I got one of those 3ds cartridge cases off Amazon ($10) which holds 18 game carts, so carrying them around is no hassle.

Regarding gamesaves....wouldn't the mSD card make more sense? If you get a new unit, just take the mSD card with you. (wish the same could be said of VC/DLC content :)).

PS>> Kinda sad that there isn't a manual in the case :(

Switch will launch without a functional VC, to be launched 'later' with no stated time table. Funds will transfer but so far no word about past purchases (I'll save you the suspense, it's not happening). Oh, yes, they've learnt from their mistakes alright. o_O

Sort things, Nintendo, for goodness' sake.

Yep exactly as I predicted. Sad to say I told you so ....

It was only ever going to be what could be construed as a negative announcement. This CV announcement so close to release would be a disappointing one as you simply do not announce positive new features only days before the release, a company will only ever quitely deliver instead potentially disappointing news and hope that being so close to release it won't affect pre-orders or will be lost/buried on the final week before sale.

I knew it was going to happen as well; it's not hard to predict what'll happen to a crowded automobile stalled on an active railway track. It doesn't make the mess any less tragic. :p

I doubt this will overly affect pre-orders, that's mostly gadget whores and Nintendo enthusiasts. The issue is the subsequent months. If it's delayed by a few weeks, it's a non-issue. If it's delayed until summer/fall, it's a huge one. Nostalgia is Nintendo's main stock in trade with consumers, the NES mini taught us that very well. My concern is that, if the Switch is without the VC for extended period beyond launch, what momentum it has will tumble.

We have no idea how the VC will exist on the Switch. The issue of no VC at launch is nothing bad. No need to get worried.

The only point of concern is the lack of official information. If Nintendo had said "information will come soon" and give a date when then that would be ok. This has not happened and it is an issue.

The other issue is what if anything from the WiiU can be transferred over to the Switch. So far no information on this either.

In fairness, there will be eShop titles available day one.
Including Shovel Knight etc. So it is good that there will be indie games in the mix to go along with the physically released games.

I am only interested in N64 and GC VC anyway. I could not care less about Kirby's Dream Land on SNES for the 95th time.

Sucks all the same but it's new content I want on the Switch right now.

I'll be putting off my Switch purchase until the VC is available.

(my concern is the "policy".... if i have to sign up/subscribe to their online service inorder to get access to the VC, i wont be buying a Switch at all)

^ it's clear initially nothing will carry over. It's whether in the future they can retroactively do it.

I'm not pushed about VC, it has never been a main selling point for any new console that buy personally, but I could understand others being disappointed.

Nintendo are being too quiet and vague on so much of the switch such as online accounts not having real timeframes for Europe except vague 2018 date for its implementation ... it does make you wonder what's going on at Nintendo HQ with the switch. It feels like for such an established company they are just 'winging' it ....

It won't affect pre-orders. It's not coincidence this info comes out exactly as the embargoes are lifting on the unboxing and official hands on impressions will be allowed from the game channels on YouTube ...

What's going on is that you have a gaggle of toymakers that are being forced, at long last, to act like the personal electronics company they need to be, and should've been since at least the GCN. The problem is that they don't know how to do it and the Japanese culture of not questioning superiors means that they're pants at getting anything sussed. That they had to partner to even attempt an effective online strategy makes that obvious, and it's still a disaster when you factor in the app nonsense, which I guarantee has as much to do with helping DeNA mine very valuable data as it is Nintendo launching yet another half-baked console.

I think after the launch 3 months - the challenge will hit Nintendo and switch sales if they don't start answering all these unanswered questions officially. They need a big E3 with lots of proper content and bigger titles (it's nice a lot of indie developers are on board, and it's great Nintendo give them so much free attention) but we need major games from 3rd parties and more NEW or enhanced First Party Titles. Indie games are great but they are not system sellers and are still comparatively niche sales wise.

If by Q4 the Virtual Console situation is still un-addressed and the online accounts for Europe are still up in the air, and there was little new content shows off at e3 for major titles coming Q4 and into 2018, then the switch may find itself in a very weak holiday position as Scorpio is launched and all the hype and press / media attention is drawn onto it.

I still don't believe Mario Odyssey will be 2017 title either tbh. I challenge Ninty to prove me wrong.

Personally, I was perfectly content with the VC/eShop as implemented on the Wii. I don't even mind purchasing the same title on multiple consoles. Primarily because the license was simple.

I don't want/need anything more elaborate or complicated. I dont want to have to subscribe to a service to be able to play a game, and i dont want to check-in regularly to an online service to be able to play a game. It's those sorts of things I loathe in modern technology, and I vote with wallet. That's my only concern regarding the VC (well that and if it will see the light of day). Example: I have not, and will not get that Mario game on the iOS.

@JohnGrey
While much has been said about Japanese vs Western approaches to the online realm....I kinf of prefer the Japanese "conservative" approach. As an example, i'll personally take the simple approach of the Wii over something like what Microsoft proposed/announced(and then cancelled) before launching the XBone. I dont want/need something "smart"... i just want to launch a game, whether or not i have an account/internet-connection/subscription/etc... and play. If that's too much to ask from these companies, i can live without their products. IMHO

I'm hoping that, by the time E3 rolls around there will be a detailed announcement of the VC..... and an announcement of what RetroStudios is working on. I *hope* they have been saving that kind of info for E3.

If Sony announces a PS4 with a 4kUHD BR drive...they'll be getting my attention :)

I agree that the 3 months after launch will be the most interesting time for Nintendo and the Switch.

They absolutely cannot afford to let the console just splutter along.

However, they've been quite clever with Mario Kart 8 as I honestly think that will be a title that people will buy the console for. Whether they're Wii U owners who missed it first time (small minority), or people who want to get one but haven't got enough incentive with the launch line up, it will definitely help.

And having played 'Arms' which I loved, plus Splatoon 2 making a summer appearance too, they should have enough to keep people playing Switch for a good 6 months, providing these games are for them. Which they generally should be if you're a Nintendo fan.

What Nintendo need more than anything though, is some third party support.
Even if it's big hitters that are already out for the 'other' 2 consoles.
Resident Evil 7 is a no apparently, but something of that nature would make a huge difference for the general public to see on the shelf alongside outstanding first party titles like MK and Zelda.
Rayman Legends certainly won't cut it.

And that's fine, but you represent a comparatively tiny minority of gamers in that regard. The sales of the Wii U show that. The early failure of the 3DS shows that. The Switch cannot be a success whilst preserving the attribute set that you prefer to the exclusion of the mainstream gamer's expectation, especially with a brand whose brand equity is in the toilet with its target audience outside of a $70 nostalgia purchase.

Bah, Eurogamer just posted that the VC won't be available at launch. Any flirting ideas I had of picking one up around launch are now gone.

I really don't know why they haven't just taken the 3DS line and turned that into a flexible home console. It has the existing market/brand awareness, give us a similar menu, backwards compatibility with VC and certain games (like how the Xbox line purposely ports over older titles in that bespoke way). I'm just grumbling away here...

Each time I bought a Nintendo console it was with the impression of playing the big hitters that come out towards the end of the predecessors life (Pokemon Sun in this case), and the new games to come. It was always an easy purchase.

No RE7, no FFXV, no For Honor, no ME: Andromeda, no Deus Ex. In short, nothing that did or will sell well amongst third party enthusiasts, no draws. In fact there is not a single heavy-drawn or event title that will launch on the Switch contemporaneously with its competitors, if it's releasing at all.
