From the few videos I've seen of BotW, I have a somewhat controversial opinion....

The shading style. It looks like straight up cell shading, at least for character models. I was hoping Nintendo would experiment with shader tech, like they did with past console Zeldas. I was really impressed with the first BotW trailer they released a couple of years ago. (EDIT>> I know, I havent actually played the game myself yet)

And a pet peeve of mine in most(if not all) games, if that shadow areas look too 'bright' (like they've turned up the contrast or something).

Thoughts?

I get far, but get stuck, get bored, turn off and don't go back to it.

This is basically me in general (some exceptions do exist). lol

Also agreed on open world games. I perceived GTA 1-2 as the first open world games I ever played (Populus, SimCity and the likes not counting) which was absolutely awesome. Not caring about missions, which were barebones anyway, and just fooling around. Took a brake from gaming and once back thought GTAV or Skyrim would be oh so great for me...but nope. I forget why I went this or that way, who this or that person was, what kind of decision I took 1 1/2 months ago and so forth. And most of the open worlds seem vast but with actually very little to do or very limited possibilities to really fool around, dunno. Doesn't help that I'm not the kind of person that reads every note laying around or looking at the distant scenery.

Part of me wishes I could enjoy them more but on the other hand I'm somewhat happy not to have a game I sink 400+ hours into..

I have been through this discussion a decade ago when windwaker launched on GC and my position is much the same as it was then. I personally think Zelda suits this art style and have no negatives to say in its regard.

If they are going to do cell shaded, then I don't think they could have done much better with the technical resources they have.

Agreed - assuming you mean "if they weren't going to do cell-shading" though. Good point with Windwaker too, that looked gorgeous (remaster), if only that sailing would be fun (for me).

Oh dont get me wrong, I got nothing against cell shading. I thought WW's shading style, art style and character model fit perfectly together.... It also scaled well to higher resolutions, etc. But i also really liked TwilightPrincess's shading and art style, and the same with SkywardSword.

I'd go so far as to say the shading model(at least on character models) in SkywardSword was one of the best. It was like cell shading meets a painting.

I wonder if my disappointment in BotW's shading model might lie with the fact that it isn't anything "new" or "improved".

Probably should see the game in motion myself before forming an opinion anyway.

This is basically me.
I hate not having a path to follow in video games. And it's the very reason why I've never completed a Zelda game despite playing them all apart from the SNES ones and Majora's Mask.

I get far, but get stuck, get bored, turn off and don't go back to it.

I know BOTW is the first big 'open world' Zelda which means I will probably give up even earlier. :p
I don't want to this time though. With all of these reviews, how can I not force myself to get into this and see it to the end?! I can't miss a masterpiece!!
100% with you. I'm a completionist. Either I complete a game with 100% items collected, or I never finish it at all, and the open world type game I'm afraid I won't ever collect 100% items and it will drive me mad. This drives my kids nuts sometimes when they watch me play games - I'll never move on to the next level until I uncover everything lol. Two of my favorite Zelda of all time, Link to the Past on SNES and Link Between Worlds on 3DS, I actually went through them 100% twice.

Urge rising to head to Walmart for the midnight release. They got 55 in stock and only 34 are pre-orders or reserves.

Coming from the guy that hasn't turned on his XB1S or PS4P in about 3 weeks LOLZ

I really hate this new tech addiction type buying habit I have. I need therapy and this is definitely not the place for it!

BotW is getting some really good reviews but I'm kind of worried about how they aren't talking about the side quest and if they are the boring fetch type. All the reviews have only been about how massive the world is and all the stuff you can do but what about the side missions and the main mission itself...if anyone seen a review that talks about how the missions are then let me know.

I get bored easily in open world games and just recently got two great games that make side quest actually fun (Witcher 3 & Horizon) and I'm hoping Zelda is the same.

Just off the top of my head, here are the games i own but havent played much (many are still shrink wrapped):
GCN: Viewtiful Joe
Wii: Madworld, Zach & Wiki, Skyward Sword, Super Mario Galaxy 2
PS3: Uncharted 1 2 3, Okami, God Of War 1 2 3, Street Fighter IV, Last of Us
3DS: Shovel Knight, Link Between Worlds

And here I am contemplating the Switch. Why? I dont know.

Serenity now! Serenity now!

A little story! I was in the car with my sister, she asked me about this Switch console that's on all the news channels today. She bought a 3DS but never really used it but has been playing games since the PS1 era. But just explaining what the console does, and how awesome the new Zelda game is, made me preorder it all.

All my usual game sites were performing oddly, with IN STOCK and UNAVAILABLE messages seemingly being picked at random. But I settled on a Game preorder - Neon, with Zelda. I'm going to try and get a midnight launch one but if I don't I'm probably going to cancel it. I'm running off hype at the moment and when that slows down the regret will kick in, and the preorder gets cancelled.

I'm pumped. I realised I spend a lot of time away from the house, and I have a huge global adventure planned for the summer. I'll get a lot of use out of this.

So let's see what happens.

All I've heard about the dungeon stuff, is that there are some that play like in the traditional way where you're in a maze and get to fight a boss at the end. I've been told not to expect super huge dungeons like the ones in Windwaker, but to expect ones similar to Link Between Worlds.

.

If you are talking Gamestop, I was at one on the day before the PS4 midnight launch and they had gotten more than pre-ordered and offered one to me while I was there...

I declined as I don't get a new console anymore until there are several games for me to play, but you still may get a Switch!

Best Buy has my BotW in for pickup already (won't give it to me until tomorrow morning though). I just got notification that both of the Switches I ordered have shipped. One is supposed to arrive by 3pm tomorrow and the other by 8pm (however they typo'd my address on the 3pm one which means I'll have to get in contact with FedEx and if they have to hold it, who knows when I'll get it as they are about as incompetent of a company as any).

It's looking like I'm going to keep the Neon version as it sticks out to me. I'll just buy the grey joy-cons when I get more. /fingers crossed that someone has a pro-controller as I never pre-ordered one :)

Hype is strong today. I cannot wait to play this Zelda game. I have way too many games to play right now b/t all of my systems, but I've decided March is going to be Zelda month and am going to be working my way backwards through the catalog from BotW to the original. Just gotta find time to finish RE7 on the PSVR tonight so I can start fresh tomorrow night with Zelda.

My switch just shipped from target.com, should have it tomorrow.. of course I can't play it because I don't have any games. Waiting on Mario Kart in April, unless the system has an online store right away and I can buy some classic stuff on there. I have a lot on my 3DS already but I'd buy again for this system.

3 weeks is a blink of an eye compared to the last time I turned on either of mine!

Therapy will do little for those who are hanging out here :p

I will hold out for Best Buy. Have some rewards and giftcards to burn. I have to believe they'll have extra units there calling out for me as I walk by tomorrow :)

So excited for BOTW. The reviews are absolutely incredible, even from typical Nintendo skeptics.

My Amazon pre-order is still preparing for shipping, and should arrive by 8pm tomorrow. It's going to be a long day. I've been avoiding spoilers and youtube videos because I don't want any gameplay, story, or scenery spoilers.

Nintendo skepticism, or lack thereof, has nothing to do with it. Bloody Skyward Sword, which is considered by even a fair few Zelda fans to be a misstep, if not an outright disaster (who amongst us didn't feel like an idiot flailing the WiiMote wildly to destroy The Imprisoned's toes), holds a 93 on Metacritic. Zelda games are Blade Runner of Nintendo IPs, they're critical darlings that comparatively do not make much at all. Remember that the best selling Zelda of all time, Ocarina of Time, only sold about 7.5m units. The average 3D Mario does a one-third better or more, and 2D Marios often post sales 2 - 3 times that.

A 10 from IGN.com:

...It presents a wonderful sandbox full of mystery, dangling dozens upon dozens of tantalizing things in front of you that just beg to be explored... I’ll easily spend 50 to 100 more (hours) trying to track down its fascinating moments.

(Sounds like the early reviews of No Man's Sky...)

Was at Gamestop earlier and they were getting things ready for midnight - had all the display boxes out.

My GameStop rang me earlier today to confirm everything was in that I pre-ordered and which have already paid for, but talking to staff casually it turns out they only got 4 switch's altogether for my local store and because of that small number they wouldn't bother opening at midnight like some GameStop's in larger towns and cities as it wouldn't be cost effective for the store to do so.

My local Best Buy said they'll have "plenty" of units available to those without a preorder. They're doing midnight opening and doing the handing out tickets thing for those waiting in line. I doubt it'll be a line for this thing especially at my Best Buy store... I'll show up in the morning after my workout. If they still have more great.

^ the Bluetooth issue is seemingly because they are using really low powered frequency which means distance is limited and more Susceptible to interference from everyday objects including your own body. The only fix would be to increase the Bluetooth power via firmware but this will invariably reduce the battery life of the joycons, but better that than the current desync issue.

The question is ... will they have this fix ready for launch day ?
Man, I hope so! (I just checked my amazon account, and it looks like the one I ordered from Amazon UK are already dispatching it, so it's actually gonna ARRIVE on day one!). -Pity I don't live in the UK anymore, or I'd literally have it in my hands tomorrow. grrr... (I basically had to get it delivered to a friend's house, and he's going to send it to me!) I'm going to have to beg that he uses next day courier service, as I sooooo badly want that console!! (I'm dreading what they charge to ship like that, but it'll be so worth it!)
The other one I ordered was from Amazon France and will ship to me directly in Greece, but the France one's showing a week later for the delivery date. (So looks like UK Amazon got first dibs). Should be interesting though to see which one turns up first!

Or.... you could go to BestBuy at midnight, get a Switch, game all night and forget about the workout. Just a thought ;)

So Mario will be 720P?

I guess we won't see much games at 1080P then?

And I guess it's true Zelda is maxing out the consoles power, and therefore we can't expect much better in the future.

I love Nintendo games, and I miss playing them, but for me personally graphics are very important aswell.

I don't know what to do.

I want to play Mario, Zelda and Super Smash Bros when it comes out, but I also don't like paying 300€ in 2017 for 720P games when I love 1080P in my PS4 too much and even want more.

I think this feels more like a handheld console than a home console, which is how I'm looking it at.

But it would be a huge disappointment buying it now and finding out later that most games are light versions or simple mobile games.

Hmm.. No :D

Those of you with little kids, hopefully this will keep them from eating your $60 cartridges :D

Yeah. Nintendo chose to (continue to) put the money towards gimmicks, rather than building just a plain old box with big muscles. Just Nintendo being Nintendo, because otherwise it'd just be another plain old box lol.
