Few hours into Zelda, just on to get my last spirit stone but need to combat the cold ...

Today mostly played a combo of Zelda and Horizon, both very similar actually. I do wish the switch had a little more grunt for dock mode as Zelda BOTW would look even more impressive at 1080p ...

Not to Derail the thread, what do you think of Horizon Dawn?

It's great so far ... The world feels far more tangible and real because it is has more general life about it, it's characters are driven by story narrative and as I say the world just feels like a real living world. Don't get wrong Zelda BOTW is great BUT it doesn't feel like a living breathing world. It's just feels like a pretty-defined space with pockets of enemies and so far NPC involvement is very insignificant ... Fundamentals are very similar between them gameplay wise. There's just more story and character arcs in Horizon.

I was thinking about getting a PS4 just for Horizon, but with BotW imminent, decided to just hang out a bit more.

Back to Zelda...I need 2 more spiritual stones to get off the first area. I did read that the start point (where we all are now) is the most empty part of the world...I guess we will find out!

BTW, anybody with a Pro controller...can you confirm this? (If it really is true, it is too cute, and I'll have to get one...)

Some folks are starting to report scratching the screens whilst docking. Be careful peeps if you haven't already put on a screen protector.

Better get your screen protectors guys!

Any issues with the de-sync issue post-day-one-update?

Cheer

Don't put your Switches in the dock like a bunch of cavemen!

(Still a design flaw that they should have accounted for SOME kind of pasdding at least :))

Did you find the recipe for spicy meat and seafood fry up?

Well at least it's very straight forward to open the switch and the joycons up to replace the batteries, which was a big concern of mine since the announcement, will it be a paperweight when the batteries wear out.

Play in portable mode :p Seriously, it looks more crisp than when I have it docked to my 4K 55" Sony. I'm interested to see if it'll look more crisp when docked to a 720p TV.. possibly yield better performance in docked mode if the output is locked to 720p..

Btw I tried both my USB-C multi port AV adapter, one of them the OEM Apple one for my MBP, neither will output video which is too bad. Would make a quick and free second dock for my main living room 70" TV..

Stumbled on this video. It was still playing with a hole cut through it

There is some small things bothering me about the Switch after owning it for 24hrs.

1. You can not charge the joy cons when they are attached to the grip instead they need to be docked to the switch. Nintendo stated the joy cons will last 20 hours but I like to drain the battery before I charge them so I guess I'll have to buy another controller or just let them charge and wait for it to charge completely OR play in portable mode?

2. I thought I could get by without the pro controller but these little joy con controllers (even in the grip) cramp my fingers for long play time...I have to buy the pro controller.

I had a 3rd but I edited it because I found the jack - complete fool I kept overlooking it.

I said this a while back, about the screen possibly suffering from scratches if you take it out of the dock a lot and then back.

It's something to really take into consideration.

They do make a grip that will also charge the joy-cons, that costs 20 or 30 dollars, but it is the same size as the non-charging grip that came with the Switch...so you probably will want to get a pro-controller.

I didn't realize it, but using the right joy-con more than the left, that one ran out of battery power ... It was time to stop for the night, so I just slipped that one into the docked Switch to charge it up. A little annoying. I guess more incentive to get a pro-controller.

I actually did today, that's what actually made me wish for higher res in docked mode, as running at native resolution rather than scaling (so perfect 1:1 pixel mapping) it does look sharper on switches screen than upscaling 900p to our 1080/4k tv's.

The upscaling is done by the TV rather than the switch itself. My LG HDR has a great upscaler, but still upscaling will soften any image. I can only imagine how pretty it would have looked running at 1080p native let alone 4k native ...

Would it be possible for all you Zelda players to start a seperate thread? You have started throwing out spoilers left and right.
Don't worry, there isn't anything that's been posted on here that isn't actually in any of the trailers or preview videos or hands-on videos that have been doing the rounds for the last 12 months since e3. If you have watched any review of the game they have disclosed far more than anyone has posted here.

No one has actually posted any real spoiler at all for the story or level / dungeon content.

We can create a new Zelda thread, but are you honestly not going to be just as tempted to read the thread to see what we are talking about and therefore in just same position when it comes to potential spoiler ...

Zelda is phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal.

1 2 Switch arrived last night and we played that for an hour. Lot of fun. Should have been bundled as everyone keeps sayin, no excuse for this to be standalone at that price although it would be fantastic for Christmas and parties.

Also, the HD rumble is actually amazing. The guessing of marbles rolling around blew our minds. Literally incredible.

Started playing Bomberman last night. Ashamed to say I've never played one before. I'm loving it! Such a cool game but the controls do feel a bit off. A couple of other users experiencing the same kind of thing. Bomberman feels a little 'slippy'. So I keep running into bomb paths or enemies.

That aside I love it. Such a great game to play in bed too. Nice and relaxing.

So far I have nothing bad to say at all. It's the Nintendo console I have always wanted. I also see no drawback to using it in handheld or docked mode. Both look amazing and I think Zelda's visuals are breathtaking in parts.

That's cool about the HD rumble. I have to admit, I never was a huge fan of the rumble, it seemed to add a bit to some games (dating myself here, Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64) but often the feedback seemed not really be consistent with what was actually happening. Since I didn't have rumble in my Wavebird, I didn't really know what I was missing with the Gamecube. I think it used to annoy me with the Wii, thinking it was draining my batteries!

Good to hear about Bomberman! That is a great party game, for local multiplayer...I really don't think I've played since the SNES/TG16 days!

I hit the local Walmart and Gamestop yesterday, both were completely sold out of Switch units. The Walmart had been cleaned out of pro controllers and a lot of other accessories; the Gamestop still had pro controllers and other accessories (including the high poo-factor Hori screen protector). I'm glad I read those reviews and ordered a different brand from Amazon.

It's raining here now, so the dog walk is postponed, and I can get back to BotW. Incidentally, my Wii U version should be arriving today (thanks Amazon...I think). Not sure whether to open it up and compare the two versions, or just sell it.

I haven't discovered how to actually cook yet.

On the inventory screen, press 'A' on whatever ingredient you want to use and then select 'Hold'; you can hold up to five items. When you have what you want for the recipe, approach the skillet. You'll receive a prompt on the A-button to cook.

Still debating whether to go cartridges or digital.

I am all digital on XB and PS but I feel as if I'd run through SD cards like crazy but on the contrary I usually only play 1 or 2 games at a time and can uninstall/reinstall dance.

2 kids just makes another thing for them to lose or lug around in car rides.

Hmmmmm

Quick OCD post:
1. My TV boots up in just under 10 seconds...my Switch boots up in just over 9 seconds. When I turn on the Switch, and then turn on the TV, the Switch is already up and ready to go when the TV displays a picture!

2. I weighed my Wii U gamepad -- 595 grams, and then weighed the Switch -- 400 grams, even! I'm amazed...

My Sony does great also, and has really excellent motion handling option, which reminds me to try enabling the motion processing to mimic the 60fps soap opera look.. I've tried it on Ratchet & Clank on the PS4 and the 60fps looked amazing..

I'm really interested to try a native 720p TV to dock the Switch to, to see if it looks more crisp and gives better performance.. Hope the Digital Foundry guys will give that a test.

Given that a 200GB SD card costs $70, being another 25% (as is the pro controller) the cost of the whole console itself, definitely no digital for me. Plus you can always resell a cartridge. Those old DS first party cartridges all sell for nearly the same price as they were new at GameStop. If they would pass along the savings of going digital (physical media, packaging, shipping, etc) I would consider it, but it's quite the opposite as no discounts usually apply to digital purchases whereas physical media it's 20% minimum off pretty much any time (Amazon Prime, Best Buy GCU, occasional Target deals, etc).

Do Nintendo games hold their value better than other consoles? I haven't had a Nintendo console in years and that may help the decision as well.

Amazing isn't it, quite a refreshing change back to the olden days - you turn the thing on stick a cartridge in and play.

Is there anyone here besides me who finds the Wii U gamepad more comfortable to hold despite being heavier? Plus there's the D pad on the Wii U.

Wow even macOS is auto capitalizing Wii U. When did Apple and Nintendo become such friends

First party Nintendo titles, absolutely.
