Metacritic rated Zelda Breath of Wild at a "98." Possibly labeling it "One of the best games ever made." Other users scores are at or above a 99/100. Impressive.

After seeing the video posted here earlier about scratched screens on the Switch, I took a closer look at mine. I can confirm that mine already has a couple of fine scratches on the bezel where it meets the dock  I assumed the screen on a "tablet" in 2017 would be glass so I paid it no attention until these reports. And I'm super careful when handling all my gears.

I would've bought a protector if I could find one. Given that a 2-pack glass protector retails for $10, how much more would it be to be a glass screen, one whole dollar? I'd trade the two joy con handles or the grip that I'll never use for a glass screen..

Ok, just got off the Great Plateau. It looks now like the initial area is basically the tutorial, the real game and adventure starts after you get out of that area. In a nutshell, minutes after dying several times to get across a bridge, I was able to mount a horse, ride it for a while, dodged trees in the woods and then jumped off to help a traveler being attacked by monsters...after defeating the monsters, he introduces me to his companion, and I get their back stories...

I'm also timing my battery stats this morning...more OCD stats coming later!

Just finished the starting area. I probably did 80% of it exploring. Enemy difficulty ramps up a bit once outside it.

I played in handheld mode for about 85 minutes today and was at 55% afterwards. So the '3-hour' estimate is probably about right on this game in handheld.

I don't have any scratches on mine yet, but I see a lot of recommendations for it. What do you all think is the best screen protector right now? I'll probably leave mine docked until I get one just in case.

I can second that...I was about to write in as well, I find myself running away quite a bit, as well as being strategic about fighting, mainly, "Do I want to fight those and break my good sword, only to get a wooden club from them?"

Ok, in my OCD(tm) test, I started out with a fully charged Switch...turned off the auto brightness, and set the brightness level to half...took some photos for about 5 minutes of the thing running (more on that later) and then started playing Zelda non-stop.

I then got 3 hours and 2 minutes of non-stop gaming before the thing totally ran out, I got the first warning at 2:35 minutes (yes, I was using my iPhone stopwatch :p ), then got a second warning at 2:58, and then the thing went to sleep on me at 3:02. Plopping it into the stand and trying to turn it on, it took about 2 minutes or so to be charged up enough to turn back on, and it then returned me to exactly where I had left off when it shut down on me.
[doublepost=1488741078][/doublepost]For those interested, I took a picture to show the relative sizes of the Wii U and Switch, and also threw in the previous "No Compromises!" handheld -- the Atari Lynx (from circa 1990)!

As I pointed out in my previous post, the Wii U gamepad (with the pink protector :) ) weighed in at 595 grams, and the Switch was 400 g. You don't get a good sense in the photo of how slim the Switch is. (and if you are curious, the Lynx weighs 545 grams *without* the 6 AA batteries needed to run it. If you look closely, the game booted in the Lynx is S.T.U.N. Runner...like I said, it was NO! compromises gaming a la 1990, lol)

Anybody get the non nintendo brand carrying case?
trying to find one for when I get mine but most I found said there is a gab so that the switch slides around and gets damaged

So it literally only took two/three days for the first scratches to appear?

It seems like Nintendo didn't put any kind of protection (like gorilla glass or something else) on this. Imagine a kid using it daily outdoors and in school.

I wouldn't want to puppy this thing like a baby. I'm still waiting for more information about this from more people to decide what to do.

Yep it's clearly not a glass panel. On MOH's level of hardness test, plastic should not scratch glass, period .... Therefore without evidence of a foreign contaminate being involved such as fine grit particles, we have to accept plastic is scratching these screens leaving only 1 conclusion. The screens are not glass, but instead just plastic themselves. A screen protector of ANY kind is now an essential day 1 purchase ....

It's sad at €330 users have to resort to pay for basic protection from the off ....

Nintendo probably went with plastic because that's harder to break and figure kids will be dropping this thing.

Of course price was also a factor, if you look at something like the iPad or Galxy Tab, you looking at least $100 more.

I don't think Nintendo cared about it being handled by kids. This was more likely simply down to fabrication costs.

It begs the question though, why did they even design the dock like they did ? Essentially that entire front panel is superfluous to its design as it's essentially just the USB C dock part at the bottom.

They could have created a far more elegant design that simply had USB C at the bottom and a raised back to support. Slightly angled/tilted so the raised back fully supports.

Something like this belkin dock. Then they could have avoided all contact with the screen and even used the screen in docked mode to display time, battery, controller indicators or game specific screensavers. So much cool possibility opens up, and we wouldn't be left with dread every-time we dock.

It would have also made the dock more portable too for carrying whilst away from home etc.

The dock by comparison to the handheld unit is incredibly poorly designed and ugly for the rather simple/meagre job it has to do ..... It's just a bad design.

Don't worry, there isn't anything that's been posted on here that isn't actually in any of the trailers or preview videos or hands-on videos that have been doing the rounds for the last 12 months since e3. If you have watched any review of the game they have disclosed far more than anyone has posted here.
I haven't watched any video reviews of the game, only text reviews, as they've been very low on spoilers. And regarding hands-on videos, I've also stayed away from most of them.

No one has actually posted any real spoiler at all for the story or level / dungeon content.
No major spoilers no, but I assume that's only because people haven't beaten the game yet. There are so far PLENTY of other spoilers in this thread. If it doesn't change, I will stop watching this thread. Of course, if I am the only one that doesn't like spoilers here, then feel free to go ahead.

We can create a new Zelda thread, but are you honestly not going to be just as tempted to read the thread to see what we are talking about and therefore in just same position when it comes to potential spoiler ...
No problem there. I hate being spoiled for something I look forward to, so that'll be easy.

Yeah two days. I only took it on and off the dock perhaps 5 times, each time taking great care to make sure it's lined up, but once or twice I had to slightly slide it left and right slightly to get it fully seated, which probably caused the scratches. I too assumed that the screen is glass. It definitely isn't. What's worse is that it makes it that much harder to clean without causing more scratches.

You definitely want to apply a protector straight out of the box. I'm ordering the glass ones from Amazon. Regular protectors cause higher contrast loss. I usually don't put on screen protectors because of additional glare and contrast loss. None of the iPads I owned had any scratches without protector.

I have a Nvidia Shield K1 tablet. It more or less has the same internals as the Switch. It has a glass 1920x1080 IPS screen and was $199. A 2-pack glass screen protector retails for $10.

I'm sure Zelda will be amazing , but the fact the wii u version is virtually identical to the switch version doesn't say an awful lot about the supposed abilities of the new console considering the wii u was always an underpowered piece of total junk.

It's just like the DS & screen scratches...I usually avoid screen protectors (more problem than they are worth, and once I fire up the gadget the brightness of the screen overwhelms any notice of scratches) but since this is my new baby, I'm gonna put on a screen protector.

Yeah, I think it is about time we set up a separate Zelda thread...since Zelda was really the "only" game at launch, a lot of our talk about the Switch was going to be "contaminated" by talk about Zelda.

Can people recommend a good screen protector for those of us who haven't received ours yet but are reading about all the scratches. Thanks in advance. Double thanks for quoting this so I get a notification. :)

I watched this video. For surviving 11 drops on concrete, at five feet, was really impressive, without any real major damage. The slow motion camera replays showed the point of impact and it didn't even crack the screen, aside from abrasions. Obviously this was a bit extreme, but it shows the Switch can take some abuse.

I watched that video too. It was impressive that it survived that many drops, at that height. I think that having a glass screen would have been a bad idea, once it broke you really wouldn't be able to play the thing.

Agreed. Glass would have easily shattered after two of these drops at five feet. Even though the plastic display scratches easier than most expected, there likely has to be a trade off somewhere. The screen protectors will have to suffice for now. Perhaps Nintendo can improve on display materials for future iterations.

Or simply redesign the poorly designed dock. There is no reason for that front portion of the dock (the part causing the issue) and could easily be dumped, providing users with a smaller lip would have sufficed.

Honestly I don't think I have ever seen so many users with serious issues and a variety of them, reporting the faults on mass and were only 4 days after launch ....

A compilation of some of the many faults reported, and by god I'm glad I didn't use the joycon grips, another design flaw waiting to happen (like dock scratches).

Also regarding joy-cons desync issues, it appears the left model doesn't have a proper Bluetooth aerial/antenna.

Adding one fixes all desync issues.

So it looks like another design oversight her from Nintendo. Making the prospect of a software solution to the issue seem unlikely.
