Every day I'm fighting the urge to buy the Switch just to play the new Zelda. So so many positive reviews and comments from everyone...

But then my rational side kicks in and says it isn't worth it to buy a whole new system just for one, two or three games, and that it would be best to wait and see more games be released to see if there's more to buy in the future.

But in this case it's really difficult to listen to my rational side... I just want the Switch

I completely understand this coz I certainly did buy the Switch solely for Zelda :p. Luckily, the hype is (mostly) real. With that said, if you have someone to play with, do consider Snipperclips as well. That game is amazing. The most fun I've had playing a videogame with my wife.

My rationale for purchasing the Switch (besides for Zelda) was simple. The Switch is a safe bet if you like Nintendo games. Even the mega flop that is Wii U had some amazing Nintendo games on it. I'm expecting the Switch to at least match the Wii U's library. The Wii U certainly had more than 3 games worth buying IMHO. If this year's lineup of Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon & Mario appeals to you, there is really no reason to wait

I've thought about Scorpio also, but I think the Switch offers me a much more different experience than the Scorpio would, already owning a PS4, that is. I mean, I see PS and Xbox very similar, with just the exclusives and some additional features differentiating them. Nintendo has much more exclusives plus I could take it everywhere with me, like If I go on holidays.

But I'm still interested in Scorpio and if they can impress me I'd consider also buying one, but having the PS4 I see no reason to just abandon it less than one year after buying it to buy the multiplats on Scorpio instead of PS4, even if they are better. I've already bought 15 games for the PS4, and I don't have a 4K TV, so Scorpio maybe won't do too much for me. The Switch, on the other hand, would allow me to play Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong and Super Smash Bros on the go.

That's just it, the Scorpio and the Nintendo switch Offer completely two different experiences. I'm not much into handheld gaming and the current titles for the Nintendo switch have no interest to me, which is why I resort to the PS4 Pro and I look forward to the Xbox Scorpio's debut. The other added benefit why I am looking forward to the Scorpio is exclusive titles that both consoles offer.

Also, you made a very valid point, if you don't own a 4K/HDR TV, the PS4 Pro really won't benefit you over the original PS4. The point of the PS4 Pro is to provide higher definition of gaming through upscaling with a 4K TV. Being a 4K/HDR TV owner, the PS4 Pro really does shine with certain games.

And I agree that the Nintendo switch has the portability/mobility factor, where you can take it and travel with you wherever you go.

The hype is real! For Zelda, anyway. Snipperclips looks fantastic, I unfortunately don't have anybody regularly around to rope into playing it with me.

Re: games, it looks like Nintendo has gotten the message. It appears they are determined to have a banner line-up ready by the holiday season, so there will be plenty of Nintendo games available to support sales of the Switch to non-Zelda freaks. And a successful holiday season could pull in more 3rd party developers, although, it may take them longer than another year to put out quality games.

The price of this is that the games (like Splatoon 2, Mario Kart) appear to be largely just updates of the Wii U versions. However, these were fantastic games, and a lot of people never played them simply because they didn't have a Wii U. But, Nintendo must be reasoning that they can't afford to have the first holiday season pass without significant games available.

This is my reasoning here as mentioned previously. Nintendo games are just a different kind of fun for me which I really enjoy compared to PS4/XB type games depending on the title.

Nintendo does first party titles better than any other system imo and at a great starting price and flexibility of the console, it drew me in after initially deciding to wait.

Yeah, just looking at the games I plan on getting this year (Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, Sonic Mania, Project Sonic, Street Fighter) it worth it for me, plus Mario Bros, Mario Maker, Mario Party, Star Fox and Smash Bros, should be coming in the next year or 2.

That's one of the main reasons why the Switch appeals to me. Heck even direct ports of some WiiU titles would be great.

WiiU titles I'd like to see:
-Bayonetta 1&2
-Yoshi's Wooly World
-Fatal Frame
-Pikmin 3

Star Fox Zero without the WiiU controls :)

I'd really like to see some key third-party AAA franchises make it to the system as well:
-"Super" Street Fighter IV (this should have been a launch title instead of SF2 IMO)
-A Star Wars game (Rogue Squadron esq maybe)
-A new special custom Resident Evil (I fondly remember RE4 and how awesome it was on the GCN).

I'm looking forward to a new Metroid Prime (specifically by Retro studios), a new No More Heroes, etc..

I wonder how Mario maker would work without 'pointer' functionality(in console mode). I'm looking forward to playing Zelda, Sonic and SF. I'm pretty sure MarioO will get postponed. However, I do hope they have a big title to drive holiday sales.

Cheers

I'm also interested in hearing about the virtual console. Never knew about that in the Wii U.

What games could you play with that? Did you buy them and then you had them forever?

I'd love to play all the Nintendo games I've lost since the N64.

Anybody on here using there switch on a smart TV?
Anytime I set it on the dock it'll pop up on my LG that the HDMI port that it is plugged into can now be used...But then it continuously does so like every couple of minutes when i am not even attempting to use it.

Continuously pops up in the middle of my screen while watching TV...Doesnt happen with my xbox

Yep, does this on my 2017 4K LG, so I moved it into my other room with a 2015 3D LG and it doesn't .....

Agreed. I personally do hope that we will see a few more "deluxe" Wii U games this year. I'm also hoping that the rumored Pokemon Stars will debut before the holidays. This first holiday season will be important since they'll have to compete with Scorpio & maybe a discounted PS4 Pro as well.

Agreed. Nintendo games are unique in this day and age. Although I did not own a Wii U, I think Nintendo's support for it is commendable considering how poorly it performed. I doubt any other company in that situation would support their system as well as Nintendo did. That convinced me that the Switch will at least have amazing support from Nintendo. Not to mention that the Switch is also essentially a 3DS succesor

I don't see how you came to that conclusion, as 3ds games and Switch games are aimed at completely different audiences....yes they share the theme and characters, but I really do not see the switch as a 3ds replacement ....

Loving Both my switch and my 2ds (I do not need the 3d and the 2 ds is better for my big hands) for different reason, and one did not replace the other.

People playing games on the go, and people playing games on the go? Huge difference there.

Playing on the go a full home console game and a portable game are 2 huge different things.
Heck Zelda on the 3ds and Zelda on the Switch are 2 completely different kind of games (and aimed at different audience)!

I mean playing games on the go on an iPhone is not the same as playing games on the go on the Switch.......Huge difference there ...(smartypants).

Just because they are both portable does not make one the replacement of the other.

Don't get me wrong, I own and do love the 3ds. However, the 3ds is approaching its sixth year in the market. Do you realistically expect Nintendo to focus heavily on the 3ds in the next few years or perhaps even release a new handheld alongside the switch?

The biggest appeal of the switch is that it can be both. I personally wouldn't be surprised if the switch will have Pokémon, monster hunter & even a top down Zelda in the future. With those games on the switch, why would Nintendo need to create another handheld? If the switch is successful, it will represent the best of both worlds. A device with the combined library of Wii U & 3ds is frankly incredible

No. You are playing the same games on your iPad on the go.

You just hurt Ocarina of Times feelings there. Apologize please.

You must have a very different iPhone than the rest of the world. It also makes you arrogant, so maybe you should exchange it for a normal one?

Just because they are both portable does not make one the replacement of the other.
Of course not. But they cater to more or less the same audience no matter what you are trying to convince yourself of.

I will answer you since it seems i can have a more mature discussion with you, and yes I do expect Nintendo to release a "new" new 3ds or whatever they will market it as... I really think that small games and full blown games have 2 audiences.

It sure won't t be released this year because this is the switch's year, but considering how profitable the DS (and later) series was i fully expect them to keep producing a similar product.

They have an overlap, but Switch and 3ds have different audiences with different needs.

You see kids running around the store playing 2ds/3ds a lot here, i doubt in a year they will be doing the same with a switch....(different audiences)

I dont see any reason why a game, which might have been developed for the DS/3DS in the past, wont(or can't) be developed for the Switch in the future.

I think the Switch has, for the most part consolidated the two platforms. While DS/3DS might be popular with younger audiences today, I expect those devices to be replaced with Switches this generation.

There is one caveat, as I've mentioned before.... if the Switch fails commercially, Nintendo will release a new handheld-only system.

Of course this could all be "wishful thinking" on my part, as I'd like to see Nintendo's software teams shift to focusing on a single hardware platform..... Switch.

IMHO

I dont see any reason why a game, which might have been developed for the DS/3DS in the past, wont(or can't) be developed for the Switch in the future.

Because 3DS is going to be supported for at least another year, probably two, and the 3DS has a 65m unit install base. The rosiest projections for the Switch for those two years is 10m units total (not going to happen). After you factor in development cost (increased assets and development time catering different modes) and the increased title cost (we've already seen that games, and especially indies, are going to carry a premium tax for the Switch, and it's easier to justify an impulse buy of $20 - 40 over $40 - 60) are going to affect sales, there's no compelling reason for a 3DS-centric developer to develop for the Switch at this point in time.

@JohnGrey
I don't think I implied that Nintendo would stop supporting the 3DS suddenly. I implied it could/would be gradual as the Switch's user base increases. I too think you will see software released for the 3DS for the next few years; This will be a generational shift(if there is a shift at all), not an annual one. IMHO

Your arguments could apply to any new console which comes out. How do you account for developers "switching" from PS2 development to PS3, or PS3 to PS4? As everything you've mentioned(installed base, development costs, projections, etc) would have applied to those platforms when they launched as well.

I'm pretty sure we're all aware of how history played out for those platforms now.

I've actually already seen this twice, once at Best Buy and another at the mall, outside of my own son of course.

With regards to a "new" new 3ds, I probably won't be surprised if Nintendo does release one in the future. Also, the huge install base of the 3ds means that smaller titles would probably still do relatively well on it for quite some time.

But honestly, unless the Switch is a complete and utter flop, I'm very skeptical that Nintendo would ever release a true 3ds successor to coexist with the Switch. I think the overlap is just too great to warrant 2 completely separate devices. My thinking is that there will be a "Switch Lite" of some sort in the future that will be marketed/ sold solely as a portable device. This would allow Nintendo to bring its price down to perhaps $199 or less. That should increase its appeal to the 3ds audience.

But well, these are all speculations on my part. Time will tell. In any case, I do love the smaller games and would hate to see them disappear. I just would love to be able to play them all on one device :p

I don't think the "two audiences" can be as strictly separated as stated. First, there wasn't sth. like the switch available before so obviously devs had to decide whether they wanted to go mobile or stationary (homeconsole). If we go back in time a little, those that played the NES at home enjoyed equally playing on the Gameboy - I'd go as far as saying that audience was almost 100% the same. That obviously changed a good bit I guess the more graphical demanding games became and the more casual gaming became. I personally have zero interest in playing outside for example - but there are a lot that would / do. But if you look at some of those Switch games already I don't see why 1-2 Switch and so on couldn't be released as 'mobile' games. Now yo can play Zelda BotW everywhere and I see zero reason why people wouldn't want to make use of that option.

For me it's more like those brackets:
Premium category: Switch
Medium category: 100% handheld (could be the Switch lite)
Bargain category: Apps like Mario../pokemonGo etc.

Nintendo clearly highlights the mobile aspect with all those tiers - it'd be stupid if they wouldn't think of becoming even more cost-effective / profitable if those games, not all of them obviously, have a good overlap to save dev time etc pp.
