Just got my switch earlier. Aside from battery life, I love it. Also got Breath of The Wild. I've actually never played a Zelda game in my life so I didn't know what to expect, but I'm enjoying it so far.
What's wrong with battery life, I've played it loads but never really charge it,

I'm just disappointed we aren't seeing improvement res wise over Wii U. I'm fine with 720p on the handheld but do expect if when docked the machine has more power, we should see a tangible improvement over the handheld experience.

That being said worse game resolution wise on the Switch especially in handheld mode is Skylanders Imaginators. It's running with GUI overlay at 640p, but the actual game behind the GUI is running at 480p .... Makes it look ridiculously soft and blurry. When docked it's 640p ... I love Skylanders, but the benefits of handheld gaming the Imaginators are seriously being taxed by the muddy and poor resolution.

Especially as both are below the Wii U Res and have graphical elements missing (more in game objects / scenery on Wii U).

Honestly if we could get 720p standard handheld and 900p minimum docked, i would be more tempted to pick up switch versions of multi-platform titles despite the lower resolution, simply for the benefit of portability and docked ... But if the pattern of games continue to offer only 720p or less docked then I will buy on another format which is a pity ...
The Switch is more powerful than the Wii U. MK8 will run at 1080p and most games are expected to as well

Apologies for off-topic. I thought some of you might find it interesting To know GameStop reported to close 150 stores in 2017. (Since we were discussing earlier in the thread reference Gamestops decline with poor trade in's/digital download being prevalent.)

https://amp.cnn.com/money/2017/03/25/news/companies/gamestop-stores-closing/index.html

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.timeinc.net/fortune/2017/03/24/gamestop-set-to-close-stores/?source=dam

Overall, that is bad news. GameStop is actually a bigger corporation than I always think they are, I know they started off small, but lately had branched out into other markets (they bought out ThinkGeek, for example).

It is always a loss to have a "local" store close, esp. since most Mom and Pop stores have had to close due to competition.

Oh, I should check that out (the prime discount).

MK8 on the WiiU was fantastic, with the battle mode now, it should be even better on the Switch!

You're correct. It is unfortunate news and competition is always good. But this has been a long time coming for Gamestop and they finally are publicly showing their losses.

In my opinion, partially this is due to other competitors expanding in used trade-ins, better incentives with in-store purchases, More competitive prices with used games/hardware. And of course digital download is playing a role.

Game Stop has been inflated with their prices for quite some time and gamers are no longer Enlisting in there exclusivity you're branching elsewhere to online/in-store retailers.

I think where Game Stop really hurt themselves, was they failed to put any real type of incentive out for the 2016 holiday season for gaming, which easily is the largest time of the year for them.

If they plan on rebounding from their current decline and financial status, they need to revamp their Power rewards for members, more competitive pricing, more in store exclusivity, etc.

I mentioned it before a couple pages back in this thread, but overall, GameStop is a dying franchise that requires and is in need of a reboot. On a sidenote, there are actually many major retailers that are hurting financially, aside from Game Stop, because of how the Internet has expanded in sales.

Where exactly is the evidence of this 'most games are expected to run at 1080p' ?

Arms currently is 720p handheld & 900p docked and Mario Odyssey based on analysis of direct footage is 720p docked.

And re: the Switch being more powerful than the Wii U, then this only bolsters my criticism that games like Splatoon 2, Lego Undercover and others are running at 720p docked (& sometimes much lower like Skylanders), which is no improvement or at worst poorer than the Wii U.

The switch is really great (especially when viewed as a handheld) but sadly either it's graphical limits seem to be getting tested very early into its life or Nintendo and others Devs are not taking advantage of the full system at all in Docked mode and that is troubling at this early stage.

MK8 seems to stand as an exception at this stage running at 1080p docked (albeit with no anti-aliasing) than the 'rule'.

I would at least expect all Wii U ports should have aimed for this target and so far as early into its life as we are, that is not the case.

As much as I prefer using the system in handheld mode generally, some games work better on the big screen like Splatoon and so when you dock the game and it in theory then has more GPU power available to it, we should expect more than merely the handheld resolution @ 720p and/or frame-rates blown up on our TV's. Even the relative minor boost to 900p when docked like Zelda offers a tangible graphical improvement to aid the transition between handheld and big TV.

If Nintendo and others decide to simply mirror the handheld resolution & experience when docked, then our devices are not being utilised to their full potential and currently there are a number of worrying examples of that and Splatoon 2 is merely one of them.

Maybe Nintendo will incorporate changes without hosing us. Like a modular dock add on for more docked horsepower

Something that can be easily remedied like the RAM expansion pack for 64

That's the thing, they don't need to. When docked the extra GPU is made available to the system. It's up to developer if they wish to boost their games in docked mode to take advantage of it.

Ah

In that case if it theoretically has enough docked horsepower (haven't looked much in but it's 1ghz Tegra? 4gb and 3 reserved gaming cores right? Never had a tegra tablet so not sure what to expect but) it's probably a classic case of not knowing how to best utilize the hardware

Probably don't need to inform ya, but I remember with PS4 and xb1 took a while to get a stunning title or two, not just a notch above previous gen but night and day difference.. devs are figuring it out

For example breath of the wild.. was just a direct WiiU port right?

I guess another issue for dev's will be, how much of a difference do they want between a docked version vs. undocked? If the difference is large, then I would expect people would complain...

I know it takes time for developers to understand how to take advantage of a new piece of hardware, but I can also see Nintendo not wanting (at least at launch) to have much of a difference between docked and undocked modes for Breath of the Wild. Maybe they will have an update in the future to remedy this? Not likely, in my opinion.

Yeah maybe down the road when the switch hype dies (will it die this year or just keep going? I think the latter since Nintendo has another popular
Home console on their hands and are stealing their own portable market too combined) this philosophy of differences between dock and portable will become greater

Definitely understand with breath of the wild, wanting to maintain consistency of the experience

LOL, Nintendo is just like effin' Apple...with the last MacBooks, all we wanted was either a) more RAM, b) more SSD space, or c) faster laptops. Apple's response: "We made the MacBook's even thinner!" WTF?

All we want Nintendo, from a modern console, is 1080p and 60FPS, or as close to that as possible. Nintendo's response? "Here is a home console that you can also undock and take with you on the road, and enjoy 720p gaming!"

I guess time will tell, we may change our opinions after working with these things for a while.

Just got my amfilm glass screen protector and install went well first shot woo :D

feels so much better having a glass screen than plastic, and for peace of mind.. now I can put it in the dock a little more care free, etc.

and I have one left, in case I ever break the screen, need a unit replacement, whatever

I get 4 hours, I know this because I play it for an hour during lunch and then another 3 after work! One thing I utterly love is the standard USB-C port because all I had to do was buy a super cheap short cable and I can charge it up via my portable battery pack! (It's like 11,000mAh, I think it says. Charges a phone 4 times or an iPad Pro once)

Again I still can't get over how much I love this console. Taking screenshots willy nilly, ultra flexible playing styles, multiplayer on the go, the best launch title *ever*, gorgeous screen, small but great launch library.

Speaking of launch libraries though. When I bought a Wii U all I can remember playing was Mario U, and the PS4? I just about enjoyed that Infamous game. The 3DS, my previously fave system, launched with just that Ocarina of Time port IIRC. So I'm happy to be genuinely enjoying 5 games on Switch; Zelda, Snipperclips, Fast, Shovel Knight, Metal Slug. I only expected to want Zelda, and just Mario Kart and Mario in the future. But it feels like I'm expanding my horizons a bit. It's definitely going to be my "multiplatform platform of choice" just because of how flexible it is.

4 hours general or 4 hours of BOTW.

If i'm playing blastermaster, shovel knight, snipperclips etc.. i get 4-5 hours SOT.

Zelda only and it's around 3 for me.

Brightness at 80%

Oh! I dismantled the Switch dock to add thin rubber strips in order to protect the screen. It's pretty easy to do as far as console mods go, but putting the internal wiring back in place is a little fiddly. My screen has no signs of damage but I didn't want to risk it.

Ah good point, I usually spend 3 hours on Zelda, another jumping between Metal Slug 3 and Fast. Brightness at 100% but no network connectivity. I sometimes tether it to my phone but there's no real need at the moment. Zelda is running off a cart and all the others from internal storage. Thing is I've never got the battery to 0%. I don't know what it ends up on before I put it back on charge.

I gots to thinking, and I realized that there are so many last gen (PS3/XB360) games I never played. Seeing as how the Switch would be capable of running those "old" games... I wouldnt mind seeing games like Dead Space, BioShock, Borderlands, etc... make it to the Switch.

Ditto! I'd play through Bioshock on the Switch, and I'd love to see GTAV on it too - even if it's cut down due to technical limitations. Borderlands and Monster Hunter would be great in local multiplayer.

(I hate this type of thinking. There are so many games I'd rebuy just to be able to play them on the Switch)
