I am waiting too. I have too long sat at a windows machine but I figure after 10 years of hell I can deal with one more month. *stares at vista* Well....survive at least...maybe....

heh you do realize that when you're getting a new MBP, you'll be getting Apple's Vista (Leopard) :D

lmao.

You guys are dumb.

1. You probably want to wait a month or so to make sure there are no issues with the new MBPs. Intel was having some bugs with the new Penryn procs.

2. It's just going to be a simple processor swap. They're NOT going to redesign the case, not going to upgrade the graphics chip.

- Penryn is pin-compatible with the current motherboards, so it's a simple swap. When Montevina is released in the Summer, Apple is going to have to design a new motherboard which will have the new socket, new montevina components, etc. If they were to redesign the case now, they'd have to update the motherboard. Changing the motherboard twice in a 6 month period would be a waste of R&D.

- The current 8600M is underclocked. The 8700M is just an overclocked version of the 8600M, so there's no way Apple will put that in. They'd just clock up the 8600M a bit more to get higher performance. The 8800M uses way too much power and generates way too much heat for the MBP.

- It's not going to be released on January 15. Apple doesn't waste keynote time with a simple speed bump. In June, everyone thought the SR MBPs would be released at WWDC but they were actually released with just a press release on the website the Tuesday before WWDC. This is what will happen this time, except it will probably be ~2 weeks after MWSF.

The iMac didn't call for a case redesign but it occured. Apple could easily do a case redesign using current hardware as well as design it so it could facilitate future updates. However, I agree that it is unlikely that they will do this for the Pro and I believe a real redesign will wait for May-June, but who knows.

Yeah, this seems like the most logical and realistic conclusion. Considering that this is just a simple processor switch, they wouldn't waste a whole case redesign on a process so simple, especially with the intel development road map pointing towards something a lot more revolutionary coming out later this year.

On redesign--

is everyone forgetting how there was virtually no redesign from G4 to Core Duo?:confused::confused:

Just because some internal components are not being changed all that much doesn't mean Apple will not redesign, or vice versa.

I agree and I don't see why anyone hasn't considered this before. Apple changed processor manufactures that used completely different components and yet the case is the same. The new platform won't be that different size wise than the current ones. The case redesign could come January, or WWDC, or 2009 for all we know. My guess is that there will be Macbook Pro and Mac Pro updates for the 2008 MWSF. There might be a possible case redesign for both using the same styles. Both haven't received updates for a long time and are both on a 4.5+ year old design.

How would you know? You act like you know more than any of us do. Maybe you're saying that because you're disappointed that the MBP you just got is going to be updated.

A high resolution screen would be nice on the 15". Does this sound like a likely update from Apple?

Although it is wishful thinking the Mobility Radeon HD 3850 could consume as little power as the Geforce 8600M GT due to being made on a 55nm process while being vastly more powerful. The Geforce 8600M GT has 32 Stream Processors and the Mobility Radeon HD 3850 will have 320 Stream Processing units.

I've actually done research, looked at the Intel roadmaps and documentation. Many people here just go by what other people are posting here, and most of that is inaccurate.

This update is just like the Core Duo to Core 2 Duo refresh. Same platform, new pin-compatible chip.

Also, to the people talking about the G4 to Core Duo being exactly the same, it wasn't. First of all, it was an architecture change which pretty much changed the whole design of the logic board. The G4 Powerbooks were also little bit thicker and they didn't have the ExpressCard, iSight, IR sensor, MagSafe, etc.

I'm very interested to see what's going to be presented. I am really hoping for a MBP update as my 5 year old powerbook is starting to show its age, however I wonder if this will happen. It seems like the Mac Pro has priority for an update and this makes me think they won't update two of their hardware lines in the one hit (hope I'm wrong).

I think there'll be a lot of disappointed people out there if a new MBP isn't introduced. The question then will be, should I buy one straight after Macworld or keep waiting until they are eventually updated?

In either case, I'd bet the price of a new Macbook that whatever comes out is going to be chock full of bugs. I wouldn't touch a Rev A product from Apple with a ten-foot pole. If you've been using your PB for 5 years, take 5 minutes to look at the array of problems the MBP is *still* plagued with 4 revisions later. There's no way I'd want that hassle by becoming Apple's beta-tester for whatever they roll out next. Just something to keep in mind.

I hope they don't update it, I ordered mine last week. Its coming to day :). They only updated processor like 3 weeks ago with the 2.6GHz? Its a bit soon for another update?

6 weeks ago :p Nothing else changed to the lineup apart from that tiny 200MHz processor speed boost option, which by the way came at a huge premium!

Just seemed like a way to placate Christmas holiday MBP purchasers who felt the MacBook was creeping on up a little too close the MBP's processor speed. I hope they don't consider that an update... I sure don't!

+1

im waiting till january as well.. i really hope we get an update..

8700 would be nice, or even 8800M!!

i too think the penryn upgrade is inevitable.. 6mb L2 cache? w00t

ill b real upset if we get nothing.. it will be like the grinch stealing xmas from me :p

My first MacRumors post....... :D

I will be getting/purchasing my first Mac in January. The last time I even touched an Apple computer was the Apple II back in Grade 7.

The company I work for has been and always will be a Windows shop as our proprietary software is Windows based. Since I am in the IT Department I do get a choice of what hardware I get to buy. With the Intel Macs/Leopard/Windows(Bootcamp'd or VM) combo is a win win situation I am make the official switch.

I got the 'okay' to get a 17" Macbook Pro last month but I decided to hold off until January. Since I have so many projects on the go at work the last thing I needed was to get distracted with a shiny new MBP. A lot of my major projects are wrapping up so come January I should have some time to play with a new toy.

January 15 is when I plan to order, if there is an update ....GREAT!!! if not then I have only really missed out on being a MBP owner for a week or two. I am not expecting any update to the MBP line but I do dream about it. Either way I am switching. :D

It would be crazy not to wait at this point unless you have a genuine urgent need for a new machine immediately. If something new becomes available Jan 15th, I'll get it. (13" Penryn MBP would be my dream) If not, I'll order a new MBP anyway. What's the downside at this point? Waiting an extra 5 weeks? No harm, no foul.

definitely waiting until january, maybe no a mayor upgrade but is still an upgrade, love to see a video card upgrade.

I have been waiting a long time for a new Mac. Not interested in the iMac. If a new model, on the order of a Mini Mac Pro is introduced, I will buy it. If not, then an improved Mac Mini will be considered. If none of the above, I will then consider a Mac Pro, even though it is way more powerful than I need.

. . .If none of the above, I will then consider a Mac Pro, even though it is way more powerful than I need.

And this, dear readers, is precisely why there will probably never be a machine bridging the gap between the Mac Pro and the iMac. People like me and maccompaq and countless others will, at the end of the day, just suck it up and spend the extra cash on CPU we don't really need.

Doesn't have much to do with MacBook Pros, though. ;)

Gonna wait to see both this new 13 incher, and a new 15inch macbook pro, and then decide which to go for...

Coming from a 15" powerbook so really want the screen real estate, but if the 13 incher is awesome, and possibly cheaper, i'll go for that.

Also looking to upgrade my dual core powermac g5 to an octo mac pro when they're updated :D
