Finally, Intel says that the Gateway One and Dell XPS All-In-One will get the Penryn boost next year, and I was also told that they are "talking to Apple."

This basically rules out penryn in January for apple :(

I don't think this means anything positive or negative about the prospects for Penryn and :apple:. This doesn't say much of anything. And you know how :apple: gets when their suppliers leak any information. It's common knowledge that Intel is releasing them on Jan 6th, right?

I'm hoping for :apple: Penryn news next month.

Don't bet on that: No way Apple let's Intel steal the thunder on a new product or even a refresh.

Also, from the same article you quoted:"Santa Rosa Refresh, an updated version of the Centrino processor, is a 45nm Penryn chip with better graphics capabilities. The Refresh will be offered in notebooks and desktops and is geared to improving the quality of HD DVD and Blu-ray, among other graphic intensive applications."

And finally:“Intel will up the ante again on January 6, 2008 with its new 45nm Penryn-based Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme dual core processors.

It’s highly plausible that the chips could make their first appearance at CES 2008 (January 7, 2008) with further unveils at MacWorld 2008 in Apple’s oft-rumored tablet, revamped MacBook Pros or refreshed iMac desktops." from TechLuver.com

I would not rule out Penryn for MWSF, not by a long shot!

I totally agree. And that point about HD DVD and Blu-Ray also jumped out at me. I wonder if MWSF might see HD/BR as a CTO option on the MBP. From what I gather there is not a slotloading model of these drives out there yet...bummer.

Just purchased

Yesterday I purchased a MBP 2.6ghz, 200 gig 7200 rpm, 4Gig (third party) RAM, 17" High Res Matte unit for use on a project while back East visiting family over the holidays.

I will have NO regrets if MacWorld produces new stuff.

If there is anything I've learned about Apple right now is that they are willing to take a few more "acceptable quality loss" risks to get products out faster. I am referring to all the problems people had with the "yellow screen tint" on the MBP 15" and MB LED's.

I was happy to get the "outdated" LCD -- Yes it uses a bit more power, Yes, it is a bit less bright. BUT it looks fantastic and works perfectly right now.

No thanks to a new model, or redesign, in January.

I jumped on the iPhone bandwagon, day one and had no regrets, same for the G5 Quad, but not on a powerbook.

Happy I pulled the trigger now. This is one, stable, wicked fast, and usable machine.

Sweet machine, enjoy it!!! I'm just waiting because I'm hoping for a smaller MBP, 13" would be perfect. I already have a MacPro as my desktop, but I need to replace my 12" PowerBook with an Intel machine for HiDef AVCHD video. I love the 12" form factor of my PowerBook, but I'll go with a 15" if that's the best option come Jan 15th. Good luck with your new laptop!

yea, Im also in the same boat as alot of people here. I WANT not need, a laptop for christmas but I am willing to wait til january to see what macworld has to offer in terms of the mbp update. However, if I have to wait even more after the update is there, Im gonna pull the plug and get it now.

also, as another person said..a new computer will have its share of bugs and issues therefore even if I do get a current version of the mbp, it will be a solid machine.

so what do you guys think. will there be another waiting period after penryn is announced or will the new version of mbps be available immediately or slightly after the macworld announcements?

Depends on what kind of deal Intel stroke with Apple. The chips officially launch on the 6th...if that means that they are released by Intel on the 6th to computer manufacturers then you can forget about Penryn-based computers being available immediately. However, if Apple made a deal with Intel for them to start providing them beforehand, then you could expect the computers to be available immediately or soon after.

We'll have to wait and see. I'm eagerly awaiting MWSF too!:apple:

I just got a MBP 2.2ghz I wont be able to open it until xmas buttttt with macworld being so close I just may have to return it on the 26 and bite my nails!

When I asked one of the Apple Store employees in Melbourne about MWSF and the possible update of the MBP, he just gave me a big grin and said "he signed contacts" so he cant disclose any information about it.

He didn't tell me to buy, but didn't tell me not to buy. But that big grin gives me a bit of hope in terms of an update.

When Apple stores receive their shipments of new products, they still aren't allowed to open them until a certain period, which is probably what the contract designates. So while they may know something new's arrived, they won't know what it is any sooner than we do.

I got this from one of the managers, no reason not to believe it - sometimes they don't know about a product the day it's announced because they've not read up on it during the day on the net like we would, and the packages are restricted until the close of business on the day of the announcement.

Let's say :apple: is going to launch a new MBP at MWSF.

If I would buy that one but after 2 weeks of use I find there are many bugs in it, will they replace the newly bought MBP if they can fix these bugs/quality issues?

Or will they only do that if I buy the APP? (apple protection program)
Or will they leave me with a bugged MBP?

I'm a bit new to all of this mac stuff..so I don't know how Apple would react to these kind of problems.

Kind regards,

If they cannot fix your machin they'll certainly replace it under Apple's standard one year warranty. BUT if there are software issues..then that's typically another story. You'll get to wait for a software update in that scenario, I'd assume.

this may be the best information on this site

thanks for that:)

I hope Apple includes the 2.8ghz processor for the high-end model or at least as a BTO. Realisticly, I do not see that happening. Whats the heat and cost differences between the 2.4 and 2.6? The same for 2.6 Penryn and 2.8 Penryn?

I'm holding out on buying my first Apple computer ( MBP ) until MacWorld as well..

I'll be content with a processor and video card bump. ( more the merrier of course )

I dunno what I'll do if the update doesn't come though... I mean I guess I'll just play it by ear, as new rumors and leaks happen everyday, who knows, maybe someday soon they'll snap the ultra-portable in the wild.

Bah the excitement is overbearing... gimme my Apple Toys! *cries*

is there gonna be a design change for the upcoming MBP? if so, is it gonna be something drastic like the colorful clamshell iBooks to the white iBooks, a refresh like the last gen white iBooks and the 1st gen MacBook or pretty minor like 2nd and 3rd gen MacBooks (sorry, iBooks and MacBooks are all I've ever used, that's I'm comparing the changes to them)?

I have wait to switch to MAC for some time. Now i wait for Penryn and 17 hi-res LED backlit screen and maybe Montevina if it will lunch soon. Anyone have some advice?

I am unclear why people are so sure there will be any sort of update of the MBP at Macworld?

I don't think there have been any specific rumors for a 15 inch refresh. All the rumors I recall center around this ultra-portable.

And the one piece of data -- the release of the mobile penryn chip by Intel on Jan 6th -- seems to have very little correlation to Apple's plans. Hasn't the workstation version of Penryn been available since late November - yet the Mac Pro remains the same. Additionally when the current Santa Rosa platform was released, didn't Apple considerably lag behind Dell, HP and others in its adoption?

In 2005 Macworld came and went without PowerBook updates despite so many thinking it would. Apple then released the second to last update PB update on some random update in Tuesday.

It's not a sure thing, it's more of a gut feeling. The MacBook Pro form factor hasn't seen much of a change since it made its debut at Macworld in 2003 -- that was 5 years ago. Penryn processors are the next big thing from Intel and they will be release a few days before Macworld. There are other things too, but those are the major ones.
