i just bought my new MBP 3 days ago

although im very satisfied already

it wont stop me from buying the penryn one when it's out

2 MBPs are gotta be sweet :p

When I asked one of the Apple Store employees in Melbourne about MWSF and the possible update of the MBP, he just gave me a big grin and said "he signed contacts" so he cant disclose any information about it.

He didn't tell me to buy, but didn't tell me not to buy. But that big grin gives me a bit of hope in terms of an update.

As someone who in a past life signed those agreements, I can tell you with great certainty that the front-line retail employee has NO information about new upcomign products 99.999% of the time. They may read here like we do, but there's nothing in their corporate email or communications that says "new stuff coming!". Why? The last thing home office wants is the retail employee telling osmeone not to buy what's there now in stock vs. something new. Apple wants old inventory cleared out before new inventory is sold in an optimal world.

Now the .000000% of the time they MAY know something new is coming is when they have to do reset the store the night before a potential upgrade. ON a rare occasion there will be "stuff" that comes in from the mothership and they can't open it until well after hours.

How about those who wait until the 15th, see no updates, and then buy. 2-3 weeks later at a smaller invite-only event (or online stealth upgrade) the machines are updated.

So, the MW timeslot isn't the only one to worry about. Buy when you "need", not "want". I you want it now, but dont' need it now, wait since we KNOW ther could be a potential switch on the keynote day. Keep in mind though, Apple could have a presentation, etc. mere weeks after the keynote and update product they didnt' want to announce during MW.

I have to be honest. I am waiting until March or so just to see what "new" things are out there.

I want to get a new MacBook or MBP for August of next year but it needs to be in tip-top shape

The MBP haven't seen an update since what...early june?

i wonder if there will even be another update before august...

the problem with technology is wait and buy...and 8 months later the latest and greatest comes out. if you are on the fence and want to buy, go and get it. the current batch have minimal or little issues from what i've seen. the new ones that come out are bound to have "launch" issues given Apples track record.

I highly doubt anything revolutionary will come out for the mbp at macworld that would make current owners regret their purchase or want to sell and buy the new one.

Can't always keep up tech...just buy and enjoy.

It's still a good idea to learn product release schedules in order to purchase when a product is at its newest.

I'm wondering about a scenario in which I'd have the option to buy a MBP, new, with the current specs that exist today, but after an update. I simply ask because I am torn both ways. Not wanting to spend the full price on a system that will be "outdated" soon, but also wary of the risk of potential problems with the newest hardware.

Are we looking at something like $2000 for a new 2.4ghz 15" after an update? Would only resellers be selling those models, not Apple?

I got one sealed at 1750 with 4gb! you wanna spend 2k? lol

For many, but not all, that's correct.

THose who dont' care about bleeding (or leading) edge tech, but rather are purchasing for a need, this isnt' that big of a deal.

My mom bought a 17" Dell a couple years ago right before a refresh. For her bleeding edge didn't mean a thing. She needed a machine for school (she's a teacher) and it didn't matter to her if it was the absolute newest or not. SHe's still using that machine, and the fact that it wasn't the latest machine 2 years ago hasnt 'changed the fact that she still uses that machine extensively.

Yeah thats true when the next updates a few months away. 15 days on the other hand...would just proove you have no patience.

Only 15 more days. Excellent!!! I wonder how many posts I'll be making between now and then on this topic alone...far too many I suspect!

Looking forward to something, anything to enhance the current MBP offering as I'm ready to purchase! :D

But I doubt that your mum is the sort of person who would become a member of MacRumours or generally interest herself in technology as the majority on here would. The average member of MR would place high importance on this because technology is their forte.

We find ourselves in the same proverbial boat, Squonk.

off topic for penryn but on topic for the current discussion..

My problem has been that I am a desktop person. I hate paying more for less performance. I've been building custom pc desktops since I was in 8th grade. It's hard to know that for the price of a mbp I can build a desktop that is twice as powerful.

I'm not impressed by the current batch of mbp's, mostly because I'm not impressed by the laptop market in general..or at least the performance:price ratio of laptop computers.

I have to wait for the latest and greatest because that's just how I am. I can't justify $2000 on current technology.

edit-That's performance : price ratio. Left the smiley and the rice because It's funny.

By that logic, no one should buy a portable machine when they can buy/build a more powerful desktop for less money.

If they move the 256mb 8600m gt model to the $1999 price point, I'll be more interested. If they intro a 512mb version at the $2499 price point, I might actually go for it, whether or not I buy a macbook pro is all up to Apple at this point :)

$1750? Cool. What kind? 2.33ghz? Was that shortly after the update to 2.4ghz?

My question is that I am curious about how "outdated" new MBPs get sold right after an update.

Hardly outdated but not the newest and greatest. Who cares if your a few seconds slower. It is a never ending game. I have had my 2.16 MBP Core Duo for almost 2 years now and it still runs quite fast. You will always have a few who must have the fastest out of an obsession but in reality my almost two year older MBP holds it own fine with the newest one just fine.

I care. All of you who come in here (who have already purchased a MBP...probably recently too) make me laugh.

Anyone who is about to buy is excited about the new hardware and can't wait to buy whatever comes out (and no duh it's not going to be the fastest forever).

People who have recently bought one come in here throwing trash around like "just buy one now (and cheat yourself because a known update is very close) You'll love it and it should be plenty fast enough" just so they can justify their impulse buying because they couldn't wait a month.

It also makes sense to do a case redesign now for them to go along with the rest of their new keyboard style (iMac, MacBook, and I'm sure Mac Pro will get it too).

back to mac!

after selling my MBP to get something smaller, rez on MB was too crappy..

... gone through a ******** of PC craptops that all have something wrong... paying a couple hundred dollars of restocking fees along the way...

.. i am returning my second Lenovo T61p in hopes that i can put the 1400 from that twards a new MBP if they are announced at MWSF on the 15th and get it in time for class that starts up again on the 28th

:) if they come out ... i will be a happy boy!

I'm waiting - my PowerBook G4 has had its day. However, I'm worried that I'll have a yellow screen. The problem appears to be quite widespread.

Also, I'm very much hoping that any new products will have good Canadian pricing in response to the stronger loonie.

. It's hard to know that for the price of a mbp I can build a desktop that is twice as powerful.

Would that desktop have the dimensions of most magazines, and weigh 5 pounds? Could that desktop run for hours without mains power? Would that desktop have a built in LED display, keyboard, webcam, speakers and mouse? These features have to be incorporated into the price, it's not all about the bare specs...

this pretty much explains it all, lol

but well, again if you cant hold it anymore, there is no sin in buying the current santa rosa MBP as it is already and currently the greatest machine for it's class

its all up to you, TS

happy hunting your MBP ;)

Nobody's denying that, it's just that for a "desktop" those features have no value whatsoever to the user. If those features are unappealing to you then it's doubly painful to pay the extra money for them.
