anyone think there's any chance the new low-end MBP will have a graphics card with standard 256MB SDRAM?

If Apple updates the MBP in January, it will still use the same Santa Rosa chipset so the RAM and HDD will be the same as before.

Hold in there. I was doing this a couple weeks ago and just decided to wait for the same reasons. It would cost an extra $200 for the 2.6 option rather than have it be included. I am just hoping that Apple will include a 2.8 bto.

Thanks dude, trying! I have sold my macbook black now so will have to live off a g4 mini till then which is just about manageable, don't have any projects for a while so don't need the performance yet.
A 2.8 option would be sweet, as well as a better gfx (possibly 512mb option??), 7200rpm hd for less of a upgrade cost (£200 is a joke) and possibly a slight redesign with some black incorporated - I love the new iMacs then I would be very happy and it would be worth the wait. 8 years or whatever with the exact same design (pretty much) is a bit ridiculous, yes it is beautiful but I am a bit bored of the look and would like something a little snazzier.

from the new macbook pro i expect a great graphics card and hopefully a faster processor.

im spending around £1300 whatever comes out.

What are you some of you guys saying? Seriously....Doubt MBPs gona have a way different look either way.

Its slick and fancy, who cares if they change it. Priorities go to the specs! they have to keep up with other companies cause they charging more money and the only REAL difference is the OS.

Ive read recently since they've changed to INTEL hackers have found a way to put the OSX on a normal computer. But couldnt get the wireless to work.

Point is they desperately need to update the processor, video card and add High definition screens!
Toshibas had HD screens for 2 years now

Yep, Apple really needs to do that. A redesign can wait but pretty much what you said needs to be updated.

Uh... forgive me if I've misunderstood, but MBP's have had HD screens from the start. Heck, even Macbooks have HD capable screens. Anything at or about 1280x720 is HD (720p). Unless, of course, you're talking about 1080p, which the 17" Hi-Res MBP has (1920x1200).

I am unclear why people are so sure there will be any sort of update of the MBP at Macworld?

Because of the timing. The MacBook Pro section of the MacRumors Buyer's Guide puts the average time between updates at 186 days. We're now on day 207. Combine this with the official release of the Penryn on January 6, plus the MacWorld conference a week later, and well.... All the pieces are falling into place. I'd be surprised if there isn't a MacBook Pro update in January.

I don't think there have been any specific rumors for a 15 inch refresh.

You must have missed this.

Not to mention that almost every other laptop producer is taking on the penryn processor. Apple would be terribly stupid to not include an update for the processor if it wants to stay competitive.

I'm not so much concerned with a huge overhaul as just any update. I've been kind of saving up for a MBP for quite some time, and I finally have the money, so it works out nicely for them to come out with some kind of update that I am aware may very well happen. I always seem to somehow end up getting the model that's going out of date, so to finally get something as soon as the most recent revision comes out is a good opportunity for me.

One part of me is saying "Buy it before MWSF, you don't want to deal with any possible issues tat come with a new release." and the other side is saying "Wait, why buy it now if you are almost certain something new is coming in 2 weeks."

Another thing is, isn't the mobile version of Penryn delayed? If it really is, then I will just get it before MW.

Nope, companies like Fujitsu-Siemens, Sony, and Acer have all announced Penryn laptops.

Im counting down the days now...

So, if nothing comes out on the 15th, are there any other times during the year when Apple has previously launched new products? Or are we safe to purchase a current MacBook/Pro - knowing it will be the standard until the next year?

The debate swings back and forth between buying now or waiting til MWSF.

In the event they release new MBPs in January, what does Apple do with surplus MBPs that are currently in stock? Do they modify all of them to the new specs or is it possible for me to buy a recently outdated version right after an update at a discounted price?

This seems like an unlikely option but I'm curious enough to throw it out there to all the true Mac geniuses on this forum.

Surplus MBPs get sold to 3rd party resellers and moved into warehousing for the refurb store.

Has anyone seen discounts of any significance during previous updates?

Would anyone care to make projections on the price of the 2 current 15" models following an update in January?

Expect to lose at least $500... since the former 2.4Ghz machine at $2500 will now be the $1999 machine. Coupled with the fact that it is used, you would be lucky if your 160GB machine with 2GB of ram will even sell for $1700... since the new ones will come with at least 200GB standard.

The only saving grace is the 256mb of graphics ram that the top model comes equipped with, but if the speculations about the base model having those specifications are true... woah. It will drop like a ton of bricks.

Buying Apple computers is not like buying their shares, anyone who still subscribes to the "Macs have great resale value! I owned mine for 6 months and sold it for $100 less than what I paid for it" philosophy carried over from the stagnant G4 days is clearly delusional.

There are always fools on eBay my friend.

I'm actually thinking more of a scenario in which I'd have the option to buy a MBP, unused, with the current specs that exist today, but after an update. I simply ask because I am torn both ways. Not wanting to spend the full price on a system that will be "outdated" soon, but also wary of the risk of potential problems with the newest hardware.

Are we looking at something like $2000 for the 2.4ghz 15" new after an update?

As far as the resell debate goes, I looked on ebay at 2.33ghz 15" models and only found one people were bidding on, but the price was about $1500.

Why doesnt anyone buy the 3 year protection plan?
I really hope there is a new MBP out whatever it will be at least by february (they usually do these couple weeks delay after introducing them  )

Even if its a new model that might have problems, the 3 protection plan will cover it with no probs :D

Does anyone have solid evidence of a possible change in Chasis? or did someone just get bored of it and say that there might be a change?

I ordered my mbp on the 28th. But then cancelled it when i heard about macworld.

Waiting 17 days isn't much even if they don't update it. Because I know that if they did I would be kicking myself.

Anyway this will be my first mac :)
