It's not a sure thing, it's more of a gut feeling.

Well I understand that, my comment was more rhetorical.

Penryn processors are the next big thing from Intel and they will be release a few days before Macworld. There are other things too, but those are the major ones.

I know, and that is why I addressed why I don't think Intel's chip release is a good indicator of Apple computer updates.

I'd love to be wrong, but I am debating about whether it is worth waiting. I probably will, just in case, but I feel MWSF will come and go without MBP updates, and instead we'll see updates a few weeks later. (And I'll wish I had just bought back in December when I went computer-less). :)

I cannot figure out why so many want a revision to the MacBook Pro case. It is the most beautiful laptop on the market.

it is very beautiful yes

bentleys are beautiful as well, but they revise their cars every 5 years or so

...and some of us still like to drop a brand new engines into our 69 mustang. Sometimes classic design does not need anything more than a new engine inside for it to be as powerful as it was the day it first came out. :D

will the new MBPs still use PC2-5300/667 MHz SODIMMs and will it still be compatible with SATA I 2.5 hard drives?

overall there is nothing wrong with the appearance of the MBP, i think it would be nice if it was updated slightly, maybe incorporating some black aluminum like the new imac? maybe have the apple logo be black aluminum and the rest silver, i dont know i'm just throwing ideas out there.

Wow, If they do upgrade the MBP it's going to be amazing. I have the 2.4 ghz with 4 gigs of ram. This computer screams. It amazes me all the time with how fast it renders video and how great my games look. I can't even imagine how fast the 2.6 ghz machine is let alone the possible 2.8 ghz machine with a 50% larger front side bus. I've even heard that the battery life will be increased with the penryn chipset.

Does anybody know if it will be able to handle more ram? I'll probably pee a little bit if the new revision, whenever it comes, can support 6 gigs of ram.

Ahhhh I am trying to hold out from ordering a MBP 15", 2.6, 4gb, 7200rpm hd to wait for Jan 30th but finding it very hard!!
Not really sure why I am waiting, I just want to get the best computer i can afford so it can last the maximal amount of time and would be pissed if I bought a top spec for it to be £400 cheaper and better.

What's after Rev. E? Will they go to Rev. F or will they have to change the name and start over?

I kind of like the name MacBook Pro; it would be a shame to drop it.

The only thing that will make me upgrade to a new MBP is if they:
Change the latches on the MBP, and make it so the lid will close evenly.
At least 25% performance boost. If its something like 10% Im not even going to both, Ill wait for another revision or 2.
Maybe a casing that doesnt heat up so hot.
Fix any problems with backlight issue, or address it (even though my MBP hasnt had any problems).
Made the hard drive less loud and clunky.

Those are the only real things that would make me lean towards getting a new MBP. Other than that mine if fine.

Which HD do you have. I found the Seagate's and Western Digitals to be the quietest and the Hitachi's and Toshiba's to be the loudest.

But other than choosing your brand, Apple won't be changing the "clunky-ness" of hard drives any time soon.

If Apple updates the MBP in January, it will still use the same Santa Rosa chipset so the RAM and HDD will be the same as before.

Hold in there. I was doing this a couple weeks ago and just decided to wait for the same reasons. It would cost an extra $200 for the 2.6 option rather than have it be included. I am just hoping that Apple will include a 2.8 bto.

yeah, im still paying off this MBP i have now, i dont see myself upgrading laptop-wise till 2009.

desktop wise, within the next 6 months im prolly gonna buy a mac pro.

Logic 8 runs alright on my Macbook Pro, but i can tell its really struggling for what i want it to do.

I have the 2.6ghz with 4gig ram and a 200 gig 7200 rpm drive and it flys.

Our MacBooks CAN support 8 gig of ram, did you know that? It is true: the Santa Rosa MotherBoard supports 8 gig -- problem there are no (realistically affordable) 4 gig chips available.

I suspect the new Penryn MacBook Pros will face the same problem.

I got mine, same specs as yours above, but with a 17" high res screen.

After all the LED screen issues, I wanted proven technology that works now as opposed to tomorrow's update that might have Rev. 1 issues.

See, this was great thinking. I don't get why people think the Rev A. MBPs in January will somehow be bug-free, when the MBPs *still* have unfixed issues dating back to '06 or earlier. I understand the desire for a 13" MBP, but unless QC went up three notches in the making of these things, it's going to be like the 15" MBP trials all over again, but in a smaller form factor. Yet so many people are willing to risk it, and abandon tried and proven stuff in order to test-pilot the newest gear.

While the Macbook Pro is a gorgeous machine - it's design is dated. All the way back to Power G4. That's what - over 3 years ago or more!? Apple made a commitment to become more "green" and the the latest products they've rolled out have been that -- the iMac, iPhone, and iPod touch. Most of them sport aluminum casing and glass. I don't see the MBP sporting glass but I do see them going LED across the board on the laptop lines and on the Cinema Displays.

One of the things I always thought when Steve stated, "We have the best products in the pipeline we've ever done" was about Macbook Pro, iMac, and of course Macbook. I think those sub-notebook rumors are nothing but aluminum macbooks soon to be released in January. As for the Macbook Pro, I think it's safe to say Apple has taken their time to get this design right.

There's a reason Apple kept the design the same for the Intel transition. Now that the transition is over and the new Cat is out of the bag I think it's time to take the next step :)

I know where my money is going come January 15th.

I'm really hoping for an upgraded video card. In the very least, offer a 512mb version, and have the low end being 256. 128 doesn't cut it any more for anything released recently.

Also yes I am waiting for January 15th as well.

yeah man,i was sort of hoping theyd do that back in june when i bought mine, but im sure they're gonna do it this time around...
