And this, dear readers, is precisely why there will probably never be a machine bridging the gap between the Mac Pro and the iMac. People like me and maccompaq and countless others will, at the end of the day, just suck it up and spend the extra cash on CPU we don't really need.

Doesn't have much to do with MacBook Pros, though. ;)

Honestly I'd probably be happy with a SR 2.2 MacBook if it had a matte screen and was 3-4 pounds or so.

If they want to dress that up as a 13" MBP, I'm happy with that :D Otherwise, I'll be going overkill and getting the 15" MBP. Same kind of thing :p

Is anyone else really frustrated with waiting though? I mean I was so excited about getting a macbook pro for christmas and now I have to wait. I e-mailed steve jobs (nothing back of course, in Apple's mind future prodcuts don't exist, there is now for apple and only now) expressing my frustration as a very eager soon-to-be switcher. I mean I already bought a mighty mouse (during the black friday deals) and even got the office 2004 so i can have office 2008 when it comes out. So now i am sitting on my vista machine with a mighty mouse I can't use and software I can't install waiting for January 15to include the fact that I won't be able to get it in my hands till January 18the at the earliest (probably when Apple Stores will get them in).

I am just so friggin frustrated and so close to just buying the current revision. ::sigh::

ok...i feel a little better

Heh. You all can go for your nice little thing, but I'd prefer something more powerful than more portable. For each to their own I suppose.

Just 5 weeks from now and we'll know, not such a long time really. I like having something to look forward to.

In six weeks we'll all have our new laptops and we'll be posting threads complaining about this or that...

13" MBP still my dream laptop if it's really a pro machine.

I think I am going to pull the trigger. I have stared at my windows vista computer one too many times. Not to mention that I still feel all we will probably see in January is a processor bumb full of new problems which, in the middle of school, I really don't feel like dealing with. Please someone, tell me if I am doing the right thing. (if their was an Apple priest, I would go to him for guidance right now)

The Official: Im waiting for Jan.15 Penryn MBP

Well Josh I'm really surprised.

Do you mean to say that no one from the Brotherhood has been in contact with you?

I'm dreaming about new MacBook Pros, especially a MacBook Pro ultralight.

And sure enough Steve Jobs has been in my dreams. "Just get centered Joe, deep breathes, be in today, the future is. Well going to be great."

And so has it been.

No, but the two apple store employees I talked to did chat w/ me some. Their argument was that if you wait always, then you will always be waiting. Sure they want to sell me something, but it is some good advice...plus...I really really hate my windoes machine.

::cry::

If you have any C2D Macbook you shouldn't worry about the newest thing. There's nothing yours can't handle

ok now I dont know what im waiting for
either the new revised MBP or the new gunmetal macbooks that have been spotted

DO NOT LISTEN TO APPLE STORE EMPLOYEES. 9 times out of 10 they know less than you do, and they've been trained to spout that "don't wait or you'll always be waiting" shpiel the moment someone asks if a product is going to be updated soon.

Hell, they'd sell you a "brand new" Mac Pro on January 14 and sleep soundly that night. I doubt they've even heard of Macworld.

Eh, I did it anyways. I just dont' think you can beat the price. Plus, comming from windows I want some time to get truley use to OSX and all the little changes that seperate you from working on a mac and truley being productive (as in fast paced work etc.) I am really excited, got the refurbished unit for 2099 (just heard from someone else who bought from that batch that their unit was in perfect condition) so I feel pretty good. Overall I am very happy, glad to be a Mac user.

When I asked one of the Apple Store employees in Melbourne about MWSF and the possible update of the MBP, he just gave me a big grin and said "he signed contacts" so he cant disclose any information about it.

He didn't tell me to buy, but didn't tell me not to buy. But that big grin gives me a bit of hope in terms of an update.

I've actually done research, looked at the Intel roadmaps and documentation. Many people here just go by what other people are posting here, and most of that is inaccurate.

This update is just like the Core Duo to Core 2 Duo refresh. Same platform, new pin-compatible chip.

Also, to the people talking about the G4 to Core Duo being exactly the same, it wasn't. First of all, it was an architecture change which pretty much changed the whole design of the logic board. The G4 Powerbooks were also little bit thicker and they didn't have the ExpressCard, iSight, IR sensor, MagSafe, etc.
I completely understand, I was just talking about an aesthetics update after you said they would not update the case design. I know everyone has said this, but the case has been the same for a number of years.

If anything, I think we should atleast get a magnetic latch.

Actually, when they switched from G4 to x86, the case was redesigned.. the screen doesn't go back as far:rolleyes:

So when we say we want a re-redesign, let's be clear: We want a better redesign

this is really exciting although I think im switching to pc again :\ maybe this can convince me to stay

Josh you should have waited. I would cancel your order ASAP if I were you. Sure, if you always wait, you'll never buy anything, but obviously the apple employees would tell you this because they want to make sales. How often do you go into a retail store with the employees telling you to "come back in 2 months"?

The thing is we're so close to the update and if the update is in fact true you will get much better value with a new MBP than an old one.

To sum this up in my own personal experience:
I bought a 2.33ghz top of the line MBP for about 3000$ with 2 gigs of ram and a 160 gig hard drive. The next revision of macbook pro was 2.2ghz with 2 gigs of ram stock, and cost 2000$.

Basically, the new revision had a better videocard, faster frontside bus, was an overall FASTER computer for 1000$ less!

Now I'm not saying that I should have waited, because the period between me buying mine and the new one coming out was about 6 months, but you just have to wait a few weeks! Come on, you can survive! You'll deeply regret it if a better macbook pro comes out for the same price or less, and you'll realise you bought yours as an "impulse" more than anything.

31 days from now the MWSF keynote will be all done and we'll know if waiting was worth it or not. If there is no update, I'll be totally jazzed to pick up a 2.4 MBP. But at this point, I'm willing to wait 1 month to know what the plan is. I cannot see myself waiting for the late summer update although that update will be much more significant than anything coming in January.

Hold on guys and gals.... :D

EDIT: And if there is just an announcement with machines not available for another 2-4 weeks (mid Feb) after MWSF, I'll most likely wait on it. But then again if I waited another 6-8 weeks after they are shipping I could get a refurb of the new machines (mid April). And if I decided to wait until mid April, then I might as well wait for summer for next update... NO WAY! My PowerBook is not cutting the mustard enough for me any longer. I'm buying in Jan or when the latest is available.

Either that or he was smiling due to the fact that you're waiting for an update that won't come :D

haha, I'm kidding. I'm waiting also.

In general, buying top of the line laptops from a company that frequently updates them is a bad idea. There's little point in paying 3 grand for a computer if you're simply going to want a new one in 6 months. There is *always* going to be new technology just around the corner. The solution is to stop maxing out on whatever happens to be the flavor of the moment, and instead (if you *must* constantly upgrade, for some reason) buy cheaper models that won't seem like huge wastes of money whenever you're next struck with the desire to have the bright shiny new thing Apple offers.

Or buy a refurb and upgrade the RAM and HD yourself and save ~$600 right there...even on the top o' the line machine.

Exactly. My refurb MB cost 1000 before taxes - 2.16,1gb,120gb. New, that would have cost 1300 @ the Apple Store. Bam - $300 saved right there. Upgraded the RAM myself for $40 to 2GB. At Apple, that would have been another $150. So my final tally:

2.16ghz MB w/2gb RAM and a 120gb drive for $1040 before taxes, v. Apple's version of the same configuration that would have cost $1450 b.t. That's a saving of $410 - money I can put toward a bigger hard drive, other accessories, or real life. It just takes a little bit of planning beforehand.

Max it out

Max it out, keep it a little longer. When it's time to sell you'll get a better price for a machine with higher specs (i.e. closer to current). In the mean time, you get to enjoy a more powerful computer the entire time you own it. This has been a very effective strategy for me; I'm always able to sell my used Macs for top dollar after about 2 years.

13" MBP is still my dream for MWSF, if it's REALLY a pro machine.
