Arcticfox is quite only one usable browser on Debian. So the question is: How to install ublock Origin? Even when I found compatible version - it can't install because extension installer can't modify some file.

Just a quick update. I loaded Deb 10 kernels 5.14 and 5.10 on my 867Mhz G4 and was able to get to a the Grub screen. After that all I can do is get to a terminal, no GUI desktop. I add “nomodeset” in the boot choice to get there. My eyes are rolling back into my head trying to figure out how to get the graphics card, Nvidia GeForce 4, to work and haven’t found a solution yet. While in terminal I did a modprobe Nvidia fib, rivafb, etc but it says neither are found in /lib/modules/5.10-3-powerpc, so I went to edit that but there isn’t anything in there.

Can /lib/modules be modified to “see” the graphics card?

Still trying…

Getting console display is good. At least you know the OS booted and is working. By default Debian doesn't come with a desktop. You have to install that manually. Just for kicks, can you install inxi?
sudo apt install inxi
Then once installed type: inxi -G
This will tell you what driver your graphics card is using.

Cheers

Thanks for that, I’ll definitely try that. I also used your instructions to try and install Feinix thinking that would give me a desktop but, I’ll try those other things first.

During the installation process, I left Debian Desktop environment and Xfce selected along with standard system utilities. I thought that keeping those selected would provide at least one if not two desktop environments. Also, in doing the Feinix install, it stated the MATE desktop environment would be loaded so I’m not sure why (other than the GPU having issues) I wouldn’t have been presented with some sort of desktop GUI.

So, below is the output of “inxi _G” on my ppc32 G4. Two disturbing results are the graphics card driver:N/A the other is the entry where is says Xorg driver loaded: nouveau: unloaded. And I’ll need to research what fbdev modesetting means. So if I am interpreting this correctly, it looks like no GPU driver is available for the Nvidia card. And that I need to rectify that somehow.

It seems that kernel driver for nVidia card is loaded (nouveau). There is no such thing as nVidia proprietary drivers for PPC64 linux, so anyway you have to use this :). As for X11 - make search for x11 driver, or most easy command - "aptitude search ~nnouveau". (I don't remember details of package name). You need something like "xorg-driver-video-nouveau".

Anyohe has solution for Debian Sid broken by libc6 2.32-4 after update, please?

Tried to reinstall it 3 times and always the same messages.

hi all, please specify can i use partition scheme "all in one" when debian install? from my known, here is need to use scheme with boot partition formatted to HFS but it is possible for debian 10 installer only, not for 11 installer..
now i use freebsd on for Imac G5 (fx5200)and cant understand which video drivers i can run here. i cant find nouveau in ports, now i use nv,but it get some artefacts when running video files. thats why i tried to install debian but 11 is fails with dedicated boot partition scheme, and 10 is so old (how i understand)

Hi,

I'm trying to install Greasemonkey extension in Arctixfox 39.0 on Debian Sid bookworm (kernel 5.15.0-2 powerpc64) and 32bit userland but no go. No problem in Fadedorb and Interweb. Everything on PM G5 2.3. Any hints?

Regards,
Kristoffer

PS
On G4 without any problems.

I manually moved the extension and it now works. Why this happened? I have no idea....

Hey all, hope I am in the right place to ask this question I have here.

Has anyone tested a PCI to PCIE adapter with a PCIE GPU on a PowerMac G4 with Debian running?

I could have sworn someone confirmed somewhere that something similar to this has worked for a PowerMac G4 but I can't find/remember where or who.

You can use newer GPU in agp slot. In my G4 MDD I have a Radeon HD 3450 and works great.

Wish there were more newer/modern AGP GPUs that would work with great performance in Linux and macOS both so you wouldn't have to remove and put back in GPUs.

I know the 7800 GS has an AGP PCIE bridge adapter since the 7800 GS was meant to be PCIE only originally as far as I know.

Obviously if the gods of Cupertino would make the source code for the HD 2XXX extensions and up available to us all mortals...

LibreOffice is broken in Debian Sid. Anyone know of any replacements? Even single apps (writer, spreadsheet) would work for me.

Really? I have it on Sid 11, I do remember having to manually get a couple of packages from debian snapshot to get it to install, can tell you which ones later

It appears that it's looking for an newer version of libreoffice-core, but can't find it. I checked snapshots and couldn't find anything newer for PowerPC than 1:7.2.5-1... unless I'm reading the error wrong, which is entirely possible.

EDIT: I just downloaded all of the 1:7.2.5-1 packages, installed them, and let apt fix the dependency issues. The older files are now held back. Libreoffice works just fine now.

What is the best AGP AMD/ATI GPU that can be put in a PowerMac G4? What's the newest that can be put in these machines? I have interest in trying a Linux PPC port with better hardware acceleration and performance.

Since the 4670 PCIe is supported in Ubuntu/Debian/OpenSUSE, it is very likely that the AGP version also works. I actually happen to have one at home that I might test on my G5 DP (PCI-X version with AGP), will let you know if it works with those distros.

Cheers,
