Just took a visit to Apple Store. Compared 11” to 13”. Safari content doesn’t scale on the 13”. I get white space left and right. Might be good for potential buyers to be aware of.
Yes. On the 13 it’s pretty much mandatory to split the screen into two apps.

I can have a video call in landscape mode, which an M1 iPad cannot natively do and that is of huge value to me.
Huh? I've done lots of Zoom and Facetime calls on landscape-oriented iPads (they're all in keyboard cases) with the camera on top (side when in landscape) and it works fine. What's this "cannot natively do"? The camera moving to the landscape just makes it easier for you to look normal during such a call since with the older layout you have to look to the side a bit to be looking "at" the other person.

If by “scale”, you mean zoom the content, you can do that by adjusting the text size.

Sorry, I’m just not seeing a big upgrade from my M1. Been using a 13” M4 for a week and doing all kinds of day to day comparisons and not looking for specific test cases where there may be a difference. Even got my 17 year old son and wife to compare.

We just aren’t seeing a significant “wow” of OLED compared to the M1.

Do you watch videos? HDR? Read white text on a black background in night mode where blooming is an issue?

I only watch streaming sports on it. If I’m watching a movie, I’m watching on a big TV. And when I’m using at night or early morning never had an issue with white on black text or blooming.

I even tried some of the OLED YouTube tests to see if maybe that would show a difference and we don’t.

I have the M1 ipad too and it’s barely any different from the new M4 screens. I guess users need the M4 chips because theyre pushing the CPU to the limits when watching YouTube videos.

Or processing 4K video or large RAW images. Try thinking a little harder on it and reading about what people are doing.

My PC is a far better and more capable device for that. Not sure why anyone would use a ipad for that as it doesn’t have a proper file system. Even if i use my ipad for that use case, M1 is more than enough power

Because people have individual preferences and your preference doesn’t dictate what others prefer. And the market can speak for things. Even if Apple sells 10% of total iPads as Pro, the average revenue from one device probably is well worth the R&D, plus it allows them to trial new tech at a smaller acale that can’t be mass produced.
it speaks volumes that there is not a huge difference in sales for iPad as a class and Mac. Surely some are finding utility in the iPad, and if they want a top of the line one, why not? A Maybach gets you to the same point as a Camry. If someone can afford the former and finds utility in spending on it, so be it. jfc the internet is a dumb place nowadays.

A lot of photographers and musicians like to work on site and the new M4 gives them that ability, which helps them make adjustments in the field with the client (if needed) which saves time.

As many others said: the reason is portability, and screen quality.

M1 is more than enough power. I would have been fine with an M1 with OLED and the new keyboard. These 2 factors are the major improvement for me that really make it feel like a major upgrade. And of course Apple won't mount an old M1 on it if they started producing an M4, that would be dumb. Of course you always get the latest CPU, what else?

Not everyone has a use case for a tablet. Many others do. Those who don't like it, shouldn't buy one. Easy 😊

There’s literally nothing an M4 does better at the moment that’s noticeable than the M1 or M2. If anything it runs cooler and that’s a good thing. But processing video and RAW photos has been a thing for iPads for years. Any difference is measured in milliseconds.

I take it you’re referring to the nano texture screen For the low low price of $1499! Otherwise any photographer or musician could bring an iPad “on-site”for …well ….14 years. The M4 didn’t magically turn the iPad into some ultra portable. It’s an iPad.

Great. Don't buy one. Love mine.
I did buy one. And returned it due to the noticeable grain issue. I’m running out of storage on my M2 so the screen and processor were bonuses until I noticed the grain which is a massive negative quality issue they gotta get sorted out. The good news is M2 pros are 200-300 bucks off right now which ends up nearly half the price of the current M4

I see many here compare the new M4 to their M1’s and not seeing much reason to upgrade. I believe i wouldn’t either If I‘d already own an M1 iPad Pro.
My current iPads are the 2013 iPad 4 and the 2015 iPad Air 2. I’m in the market for any of the current iPads just released.
in recent years I thought I’d hold off until Face ID would come to the iPad. I figured if they last 9-10 years I might as well get a model I really like, break the bank and forget about the price asap. So now they’re here. I went to the store and actually worked for 15 minutes on all of the new models: the M4 11” and 13”, 2024 M2 Air 11” and 13”. Is the OLED display the best? Yes. Do I crave one? Absolutely. Am I getting one? Still on the fence. See also *) price point in Europe below.

Compared to my 2015 iPad Air 2, the new M2 iPad Air displays are a huge improvement. I watch movies on iPad weekly. The black bars on my 2015 model are so obviously shining grayish and the entire display backlight brightness goes up and down all the time as if someone keeps slowly jerking the brightness slider up and down. The M2 air display doesn’t do that. Does the M4 OLED display do movies a lot better? Yes. But the M2 air does a very decent job.

Even the apple fan boys from Max Tech YouTube channel feel the M2 Air is a much better deal than the M4. They feel the M4 pro‘s cost way too much. That’s a first. But I will still make up my own mind.

For scrolling through lines of text, such as browsing web pages, which I do daily, the new M4 OLED display has one other major feature and that is 120Hz. I have that feature on my iPhone 14 pro Max and once you’ve gotten used to that, it’s hard to go back. Especially since the iPad display is much larger than a phone, so the 120Hz benefit is more noticeable, heck even more noticeable on 13” than on 11”.

So summa summarum, I believe that I would really benefit from having the OLED 120Hz display. If the device in fact will last at least 8 years it’s just €50 per year extra, which seems a no brainer. Still I’ll need to chew on it a bit more for now.

*) It’s a very high price point, especially in Europe. For example, the entry 256GB M4 11” costs €1219, with €/$ conversion rate = 1,08 that is $1316 USD as compared to $999 US price. I know, US residents will pay tax but a EUR iPad will still cost significantly more.

Max Tech tested extensively and found the 2024 M2 Air runs cooler than the M4 and has better battery life. yes it surprised me too.
I agree that at this point the M1 is powerful enough for most tasks. The real difference will come after 5 or 6 years from now when the M4 will still feel responsive while the M1 will feel slow.
