I see many here compare the new M4 to their M1’s and not seeing much reason to upgrade. I believe i wouldn’t either If I‘d already own an M1 iPad Pro.
My current iPads are the 2013 iPad 4 and the 2015 iPad Air 2. I’m in the market for any of the current iPads just released.
in recent years I thought I’d hold off until Face ID would come to the iPad. I figured if they last 9-10 years I might as well get a model I really like, break the bank and forget about the price asap. So now they’re here. I went to the store and actually worked for 15 minutes on all of the new models: the M4 11” and 13”, 2024 M2 Air 11” and 13”. Is the OLED display the best? Yes. Do I crave one? Absolutely. Am I getting one? Still on the fence. See also *) price point in Europe below.
Compared to my 2015 iPad Air 2, the new M2 iPad Air displays are a huge improvement. I watch movies on iPad weekly. The black bars on my 2015 model are so obviously shining grayish and the entire display backlight brightness goes up and down all the time as if someone keeps slowly jerking the brightness slider up and down. The M2 air display doesn’t do that. Does the M4 OLED display do movies a lot better? Yes. But the M2 air does a very decent job.
Even the apple fan boys from Max Tech YouTube channel feel the M2 Air is a much better deal than the M4. They feel the M4 pro‘s cost way too much. That’s a first. But I will still make up my own mind.
For scrolling through lines of text, such as browsing web pages, which I do daily, the new M4 OLED display has one other major feature and that is 120Hz. I have that feature on my iPhone 14 pro Max and once you’ve gotten used to that, it’s hard to go back. Especially since the iPad display is much larger than a phone, so the 120Hz benefit is more noticeable, heck even more noticeable on 13” than on 11”.
So summa summarum, I believe that I would really benefit from having the OLED 120Hz display. If the device in fact will last at least 8 years it’s just €50 per year extra, which seems a no brainer. Still I’ll need to chew on it a bit more for now.
*) It’s a very high price point, especially in Europe. For example, the entry 256GB M4 11” costs €1219, with €/$ conversion rate = 1,08 that is $1316 USD as compared to $999 US price. I know, US residents will pay tax but a EUR iPad will still cost significantly more.
